Yes, there was a similarly named thread previously, but after I attempted to include a few images it went a bit heywire and I've started again here, apologizes
As much fun as trains, planes and automobiles might be, I'd really like to see waterways included more fully in this game. If there is any interest from modders and the aquatic branch of urban planning engineer geeks who would like to see such things in the game.
I live in a formally industrial city in central New York State in the USA and have had an interest in local history and industrial America in the early 1900's. An important part of the history of this area is the Erie Canal and while no longer the major form of transportation for goods, the system is still there and has mostly recreational now. One of the most interesting features of the canal are the Lift Locks, which are capable of raising and lowering boats and the surrounding water from one level to another; in the case of my city just over 40 feet (12 meters).
With the amazingly dynamic water of Cities Skylines it would be interesting to see if/how this would work in the game.
Even just having the ability to actually build canals would be huge; I know there is terraforming, but that takes place before the city starts being built, if after the city is built and it would be better to have water flow elsewhere it could be very interesting to build a pathway for that water within game-play. This would function not only as transportation for industrial harbors (possibly adding tourism harbors in keeping with modern usage) but also for hydroelectric plants as well as city-water and sewage.
(I realize that there would be the possibility of conflict between Canals and the Metro system, but that could also make for some very interesting chaos as well.)
Having no idea what kind of modding there will be, and I have never done any kind of modding myself, I think these could really be fun additions to what already looks like an amazing game and provide a deeper level of customization as well as really changing up the dynamics of how your city flows.
Not only would these additions enhance gameplay, but there is opportunity for some visually stunning set-pieces, such as The Falkirk Wheel from Scotland, the Strépy-Thieu boat lift in Belgium and the Peterborough Lift Lock in Canada.
The style of lift lock that I'm most familiar with (along the Erie Canal), and the one that I feel would be most mechanically fun for the dynamic water are those that will drain and fill to bring the boats up and down the different levels rather then holding the boat and water in an actual basin.
