So, I wonder if this will be in the game in some way? Perhaps as the result of a robot uprising (and already established, possible scenario in the game).

I personally think it might be fun if this is an option. Your empire is decimated by these Robots, so you decide to collect what you have left of your race, put them in a life boat/generational ship/fleet and have them attempt search for a new home. It could either be an established point on the map a distance away, or you could factor in the idea of 'researching your own pre-history' - another talked about thing in the game - which will give you scripture/clues as to your destination. Then, you'll have to find that on the map.

Of course, you could factor other things in: will the robots continue to pursue? How will other races treat your nomadic race? Will they be treated as leeches? Will someone extend a hand, let you colonize, but only if you become a part of their empire?

You know, most of the major components are already in the game:

  • Robot uprising leading to your extinction? That's one of the first end-game situations they mentioned.

  • Researching your history? That's already a thing you can do and they've spoken to the ability to research your own origins.

  • As for having your race be a nomadic, space-faring race that hasn't been officially mentioned... but perhaps it's close to something like the Horselord mechanics?

  • Also, they've mentioned the Forerunner civilizations that will have superior tech, but lost all the knowledge and are slowly declining. Maybe a few script edits, and this could look a lot like your 'last of civilizations'-type race... all you would need is to make them nomadic. It would reflect a dwindling fleet in that it would be mobile, and reflect the difficulty in replacing resources as it's slowly chipped away by outside forces like enemies or natural disasters, etc.

Futher, the very notion of a nomadic, space-faring race isn't exclusive to Battlestar Galactica - there's Quarian fleet from Mass Effect, and at least a few nomadic races have been mentioned in Star Trek.

Awesome, a must have!

...we're not a civilization anymore. We are a gang, and we are on the run, and we have to fight to survive. We have to break rules. We have to bend laws. We have to improvise.

I didnt played the CKII Nomads yet. But i like the horde/expedition mechanics in Attila: Total War.

I'd love to be a hoard of space locusts, moving from system to system stripping it of resources to build an ever larger flotilla. Why settle on a homeworld? Home is wherever the mothership is.

A nomadic phenotype could be quite fun, but my expectation is that it will not be in the base game. Maybe a post release DLC.

Nomads shouldn't be a phenotype but a possible trait/ability for all phenotypes.

If they would just enable civilian ships that can create resources and no game over if you have at least one capital ship (capital as in country capital :) ), I would be ok with that.
This do not have to be forced as in nomads that can only be nomads, but as a choice.

Quarians had a planet and they came back to it in ME3 (depending on player choices) and settled it again. Fleet in BSG settled New Caprica and SPOILER_PLANET. :)
Becoming nomads should be a choice. Settling down should also be a choice.
