Especially with DV's low stats for children, it could be quite dangerous, and the fact its Byzantium never, ever helps!

I imagine that, if the situation continues along the track it has set, then you'll be looking at a single united orthodox state to face the Mongol invasions, when they arrive.

Chief Ragusa: Your right, it was a tragic but somewhat fitting end. It would be hard imagining a man as warlike as Romanos dying in his sleep.
Anyway I think the kingdoms of Europe have more than enough reasons to tremble in fear now that the Basileus has tens of thousands men of the Rus waiting to die for his glory and that of the true orthodox faith. Let's see where the future will lead.

General_BT: Yes regencies have become rather tricky in Deus Vult since children are no longer born with a complete set of stats. But if the Empire is spared from inner chaos and Nikephoros will prove an at least average monarch, the neighbors of the Byzantines have a problem.

English Patriot: Your right there. Especially when you consider that the Komnenid ruling system which I also have tried to simulate collapsed when after Manuel I death his minor son Alexios II ascended the throne. As a mere boy he was naturally unable to perform the double function of emperor and leader of the most important noble families which had given so much stability to the empire before. Well I suppose you know the story...

Plushie: Although it is still quite some time away this sounds like an interesting scenario. What might happen if the emperor of the time is as inept as say Constantine X? Will the Empire itself have enough strength to withstand the Mongol onslaught or will the attack of a nomadic Asian horde signal the end of Roman hegemonia just like over 800 years before?
We shall see.

Anyway since Nikephoros came to the throne so young and it might take a while before I post the next update. Hopefully I will at least get trough his reign this weekend, so that I can begin writing next week.

My first campaign is as the Byzantines. Knowing my history, (and not wanting to be overwhelmed by trying to manage the entire empire immediately) I chose to start as the prince of Paphlogonia. I'm really glad to see that someone else is so interested in the Empire, so I'll certainly be reading your AAR with interest as it continues.

Warpimp: Thanks! I'll try my best to keep it interesting.

darviathar: I too thought about starting as Alexios Komnenos but then came to the conclusion that it might be more interesting to see what Romanos Diogenes might have achieved if he had lived.
As you have rightly figured the history of the Byzantine Empire has always fascinated me and is one of my key interests. I will try to utilize my knowledge of Byzantine history for this AAR. Hopefully this sole beacon civilization in a sea of barbarism will survive and not be smashed by ignorant Latins (4th Crusade) or savage Muslims (Ottomans).

Anyway I have a good and a bad news for all you readers. The good one is that I am through with Nikephoros III reign. The bad one is that my autumn holidays have begun and I am leaving for Rome tomorrow. I will remain in the "Eternal City" for a week. Bad for you but I'm looking forward to it. :p

Was the part about changing the feudal structure to a Latin style an actual in-game happening or an invention to explain away the whole Byzantine Russia thing? Either way, it was certainly a good move story-wise!

So how's Nikephoros doing anyway?

So I have been back from Rome for half a week now, so it's fair enough to give you readers a bit of feedback.

anonymous4401: I actually changed my ruling laws to feudal contract. It was the only way to keep the Empire from falling to pieces, due to the low diplomacy stats of my emperor. I am glad to hear that I managed to work it into the story convincingly. :)

RGB: I am currently working on Nikephoros but it was a long reign so I dare not estimate when I will have the next update ready.

So, will you be updating this?
I'm really looking forward to an update.
I am planning to but finding time is hard. I have quite a few things going on in school at the moment and I am also working on the continuation of my Mega-Campaign. Still perhaps the weekend will provide the time necessary to bring you the grandiose reign of Nikephoros III.

Yep. I'll be waiting too but just as a reminder, you can never have too much Byzantine goodness.

Well, incompetent Emperors have really screwed over the Empire while dealing with lesser threats (and competent ones have been unable to fend off greater threats), but the Romans might be in a semi-unique position because several of the Mongol's favorite tactics are actually things the Romans used themselves. The false retreat, for instance, isn't something an Imperial commander is going to be likely to fall for.

In game? I don't know, I tend to play on the Western fringes of Europe, so I don't have much experience with Mongols except as sweeping in to pick up the pieces for my greater Briton Empire :p
