It's strange that the checksum is always b6dc (1.2.4) when I try to enable some mods , like (Ethic and Government Rebuild).

How can I know whether the mods disable achievements ?

I'm not sure how exactly checksum here is calculated, but given that it's only a 16bit value, getting a collision (2 different sets of data produce same hash/checksum) shouldn't be THAT hard. So, sooner or later, a combination of mods that doesn't visibly change the checksum should have arisen. Now, whether it will keep achievements enabled or not is another question, and I can't give you an answer here.

I've been using mods since pretty much day 1 - currently using around 20 or so - but my checksum has always been what it should be for that version. I thought as long as the mod didn't overwrite game files, they didn't change the checksum?

Are you looking at the checksum in the game or in the launcher? The launcher probably doesn't change but the one on the actual game's main screen should change if you mod anything other than cosmetics (and even some of those probably affect it).

The checksum is not only about modifying the actual game files but about anything that makes the current running instance of the game different from what it would be with only unmodified original files.

True, MP games will fail to connect if Checksum has changed on the Host or Client.

Ahhh... indeed. Never did bother to look once I loaded the game :p

I'll get my coat..

Maybe they went to another level :
checksum for core files
checksums for each mods

That would be the way to check the version correctly with limited hash match possible.
