It's the early 1600's, and Italy is Venetian but for three provinces: Papal Rome, Romagna, and Emilia. The last two are Spanish. I was waging successful war against Spain (with a little help from France)...all of Spanish Italy was occupied. To get the best possible peace settlement (Spain had previously offered one of the two provices I wanted), I was preparing an invasion fleet with which Sicily (or maybe Malta) would be taken...just as my army is about to board, I received a message letting me know that my army in (spanish) florida had just been attacked by a spanish force, and I clicked 'Go To' to make certain all would go well in the New World...

...WHEN MY HARD DRIVE BEGAN TO 'CHURN' AND EU DROPPED OUT TO WINDOWS. Not a trace of my impending underdog victory. The resolution changed, and all was back to normal, sans EU. Here I am, a few minutes later, inconsolable, asking:

A) What happened?!?
B) Has this happened to anyone before?
C) Is this particular game salvageable?
D) How might I avoid such crashes in the future?

paradox or knowledgable EU playing folk...please help!

Hi,

It is happening also in the Swedish version of the game. Dumping to windows is the only crash I have experienced with EU, but now it happens all too often.

With patch 1.05b it happened one time in ten hours of game play.

With patch 1.07c it happens two-three times in only one
hour of game play. This is all too often, and it almost takes the fun out of the game (only almost :)) It is something strange with the latest patch.

I tell y'what, brother, I could've used the comfy chair at that point... :D

I think it's great that so many folks are able to approach this problem so lightheartedly. I also have freely adopted the viewpoint that the support from the Paradox guys for both the game and this forum is light years beyond anything I've seen before.

All that being said, the implication that these things have been recurring in the Swedish game since inception worries me a bit. The AI advances as far as I can tell from what I've read have been substantial and my own feeling, for whatever it's worth, is that additional enhancements to the AI, while desirable, should take a lesser priority to the elimination of game crashes. Which is not to say that this is not already the case, and certainly if there hasn't been a definite discernible pattern to the crashes, then finding and fixing the problem will be no small matter, I'm sure.
Spent nearly a decade as a corporate programmer...been there! But for me, I must say that a game that quits frequently of its own accord is going to be a source of SIGNIFICANT frustration, and I hope this matter can be resolved in the not too distant future.

just as a follow-up, the anomalous crash happened again 10 minutes after the loading of said save game, but when I came back a few hours later, no such crash came about.

odd.

I agree, people are taking it pretty well. Having been through the infamous 'Front Page Sports Football 2000' fiasco with Sierra, everyone here is pretty civil. Different crowd, I guess.

Actually, its starting to try my patience

After a solid weekend of play, the crashes are really starting to dampen my enthusiasm for the game. The autosave feature is a major help, but we really shouldn't be reduced to that. The fact that the crashes seem to happen more the deeper into the game doesn't make it any better.

Here's hoping they fix it soon or at least give us some idea of when or why it occurs. I know that I'm not right clicking on the diplomacy screen or whatever. I'm just playing the game, when pop! back to the desktop. Its happened three times in the last two hours of playing.

I totally agree with You Tjalle. The latest (official) patch is gradually driving me nuts. Is old patches still around?

Hi Wasa,

Nice to know that I’m not all alone (even though i feel sorry for you:)), and that it seems like my commuter hardware is ok.

However, there is still hope for you Wasa and patch 1.07c. I have just started a GC with a minor country (Hansa). I have played about 100 years (6h) without dumping to windows. Maybe the dumping problem occurs only when you play with a major country? One explanation can be that with a major it is too much information for the game to handle. In my last GC as Sweden I had to use autosave more the 100 times (I’m exhausted). Thanks for autosave.

Hi Tjalle,
Well for the moment I am trying to play Venice but around 1535 the game goes down, thank God for the Holy Autosave. I do not think that minor or major country matters that much, I have had the same problems with almost any game played since the arrival of 1.07c.
