*The Affairs of the Heart*

p7434131.jpg

Before we begin, I know next to nothing about this period of history, the people or the events, save the barest minimum. This is very much an experiment for me, a harmless adventure into the realms of Crusader Kings. So, just the basics of the experiment.

Goal: Survive as the Duchy of Toulouse.
Style: Not very accurate, since I know nothing of these people or this period.
"House" Rules: No F12 cheats, we must be sporting, even if we approach this experiment as innocents.

The Duchy of Toulouse, Liege of the King of France, Vassels to Foix, Narbonne, Carcassonne, Rourgue and Gevaudan.

p7434106.jpg

Traits: Flamboyant Schemer.

26 December 1066 – 7 March 1067.

"My King is a mere child, my lieges are mere fools. I have no child nor wife." Was the situation that has presented itself to Guillaume, Duke of Toulouse. The Holy Land lies in the hands of heathens, but not all were servants of Mohammad. The Kingdom of Nubia was a mystery, but not for the Duke. Eager for a wife; and the King of Nubia eager for influence in Europe; an agreement was soon established between the two, in a series of letters that traversed the great sea.

The result was a marriage between a young noble women of high regard and the Duke, who found her beauty as compelling as any majestic view on the first day of Summer. Her name was Sidiqa, the daughter of a noble who dabbled in mercantile pursuits. It was hoped that the Duke and Sidiqa would soon produce a child. The reaction in the chapel was expected but ignored – it would no doubt come back to haunt the Duke.

p7434112.jpg

Traits: Selfish, Just, Crafty Merchant.

Meanwhile, affairs were afoot by the Duke to revoke the titles of Count Berenger, for greater control. He loyally conceded and accepted his fate, with the threat of force by the Duke. This would result in more land that was directly under the influence of the Duke, and his new wife and now had direct access to the sea.

Having successfully dealt with the Count, the Duke sought to further his power over his Duchy by granting positions within his court to local nobles. The aging knight Hugues de Toulous was appointed Marshall, whilst Sidiqa assumed the role of the Stewerd, a vengeful and cunning young woman Cloutilda de Pvylavrens managed to persuade the Duke into appointing her Spy Master of the Court, whilst a chaste young noble Cloutilda de Crussol was appointed Chancellor.

Excellent News

Amongst the activity that had enveloped the court of Toulouse, it was announced that Sidiqa was carrying a child. The Duke was incredibly pleased with himself, and hoped, for a son.

A promising beginning! Toulouse has great potential if you're careful. Compared to the other games, the best advice I can give you is to not count on history (IE- France could implode tomorrow, or it could make a run on the continent), and if you find any Muslims in easy striking distance that is small enough for you to take on, go for it. You don't need a claim and you don't lose rep.

Good luck!

Thanks CatKnight, I am still learning alot, and trying things, but I shall try and twist some plot into the story. :)

*To Be A Father*

8 March 1067 – 26 February 1068.

September 9.
p7435665.jpg

“My Duke, there is news from Rome.” Cloutilda de Crussol said, kneeling before the Duke. Word had been sent from Rome, along with a Bishop who was not fit for the prying eyes of Rome, but could be quietly tucked away in some long forgotten bishopric. The letter from the Pope was well received, and not wishing to cause any concern nor incur the wrath of Christendom, the lustful Bishop Esteve sought refuge, his indiscretions and constant attention upon Cloutilda de Pvylavrens would earn Bishop Esteve disdain amongst the women of the court, who were increasingly powerful in their roles surrounding the Duke.

December 6.

p7435671.jpg

“To be the father of daughters.” Moaned the Duke, as news from the bedroom Sadiqa reached the duke through one of the numerous women helpers who were aiding Sadiqa with her “womanly nature” as the Duke would later recall. Sadiqa had given birth do a daughter, to be named Laura, by her father and be taught the ways of the court like her mother. Although he has hoped for a son, he would try and cherish Laura and trust her, like her mother.

Sir Humphrey writing a CK AAR? Madness! Madness! The world has gone mad!

How cruel of the computer to give you a daughter in a situation like that! Oh well, they will just have to try again...

Welcome to the CK arena Sir H, your first AAR here looks to be a good one! An Arab Orthodox wife? The Church is gonna love her. :p

Toulouse? The name sounds familiar...

....

Hey, wait a minute.

Looking good so far. Toulouse is a pretty good choice.

anonymous4401, totally mad, insane, bonkers, stark raving mad as a hatter.
Janus Rook, I don't rightly know. Something about the mysteries of the east perhaps... ;)
stnylan, it appears the Duke is quite willing to have a few goes at it.
VILenin, yep the Bishop is doing his nut, but will word reach the pope?
east_emnet, thanks. :)
CSK, we shall soon see. :D

*Bishops, Bastards and Daughters*

7th July 1068.

p7452285.jpg

“Bishop Esteve, you are not looking well.” The Duke said to his Bishop who stood before him. Bishop Esteve gave a hearty cough as he clutched his hip with right hand. He appeared to twist around and collapse, his robes forming a crumpled heap on the rug covered stone floor of the court. He lay motionless while the court gathered to watch the macabre spectacle. Amongst the women the court, there was little sympathy for the Bishop who was lying on the floor. “The Bishop is dead.” Declared the sniveling physician to the gawking spectators. There was a short gasp, and little else was said. After a while, the limp body was dragged away beneath a sheet to the church, where the proper activities would be arranged.
“Bishop Esteve will not be missed.” Cloutilda said as she adjusted her robes to Sadiqa who watched with equal fascination.

14th August 1068.

p7452292.jpg

“My urges have not yet ceased. I must release them, or I shall fear the worst.” The Duke lamented in his diary. And it was not was not nearly a day before his urges begot the better of him. A humble serving girl would become the focus of his attention. A passionate affair was to begin, and the Duke would eventually see a son born of Felica the serving girl, a bastard son, but the son of the Duke nonetheless.

27th October 1068.

p7452302.jpg

Whilst the humble serving girl Felica was carrying the child of Guillaume, Duke of Toulouse it was said throughout the court that Sadiqa was expecting another child. The Duke prayed to god, not to curse him for his straying eyes, and grant him a true son that he could be proud of; to hold dear. No doubt the Duke would be cursed for the rest of eternity as the father of daughters and bastards.

30th october 1068.

p7452308.jpg

Traits: Illness, Bastard.

T'was not three days after Sadiqa was announced to be carrying the child of the Duke, that the bastard Odon was born to Felica, the serving girl. “What good is a bastard to me?” The Duke was less than caring for Odon, would no doubt be taught the ways of the nobility, at least there could be some future for the only son, if still a bastard of the Duke.

21th May 1069.

p7452323.jpg

Traits: Selfish

“I maybe a father of daughters, but Laura should be raised by women.” Or so the Duke had decided. His daughter Laura would be cared for by the nannies of the court, which would no doubt have an influence upon her, most likely selfish, like her mother.

5th June 1069.

p7452336.jpg

Sadiqa had a crisis of conscience, she was fighting herself, whilst she carried a child. The Duke was soon to weight into the matter, and that as his wife, she would have to mend her ways and stop being selfish – something that was particularly stressing on her, it having been a force of habit for many years, since her days as a courtier in Nubia. Whilst carrying a child, she would be forced, with the help of her servants to stop being selfish and demanding.

24th July 1069.

p7452343.jpg

“God has cursed me for my sins.” The Duke prayed quietly in the chapel. “For once again, a daughter has been born of me. I am doomed to be the father of bastards and daughters. She will be raided as her mother wishes her to be, and one day, she will make a good wife.” A daughter was born, to be named Beatritz, and like her sister, would take after her father in looks. There was however trouble abroad in the Holy Land, though it was between the heathen realms, and it was expected that the Pope would not exploit the situation of division between the servants of Mohammad.

*A Question of Faith*

12th September 1069.

p7453575.jpg

“Pray, for the Duke be blessed with another child.” So rang the calls through the towns and the villages of the criers and the taverns, along the paths and across the farms. Whilst the Duke spent the verge of every waking minute in the chapel, praying for a son to be born to his name, Sadiqa once more was in the throes of carrying a child. The court was rife with expectation and rumor, particularly about the Duke and his habit of fathering daughters, the bastard son did not quench his thirst of a proper son worthy of titles and glory.

8th October 1069.

p7453580.jpg

“I come before you, my Duke, with knowledge brought from the East. I can cure your son of the illness that assaults him day and night. The mysteries of the East are great and many, but none more so than that of the healing powers that remain shrouded in mystery. For a small amount of gold my Duke, your son could be free from the stalking reaper of illness and ill health.” The lanky traveler, partially dressed in turban and European robes, smelling of exotic smells and customs bowed before the Duke.
“He maybe a Bastard, but he is my son. He deserves better than to die of some illness, but not much.” The Duke was heard, whilst the women of the court looked on, awaiting his decision. The promise of the lanky traveler was accepted, and the young Odon was placed in his room, and treated for days with the mysteries of the East. After many days, Odon would emerge cleansed of illness like never before.
“At least he will be a healthy bastard, well enough to fight on the field of battle some day.”

3rd February 1070.

p7453586.jpg

“I will hear no such thing. He is a bastard, but he is my son, I will not permit the murder of my own son, regardless.” The Duke was heard yelling to his Master Spy, Cloutilda de Pvylavrens. She was eager to obtain ever more power, and even though a bastard was an outcast and an embarrassment, this would further her control over the power of the court. It appeared that de Pvylavrnes has hoped the spreading illness would eventually overtake the young boy's body and that she would not have to resort to such drastic action. Yet the appearance of the healer from abroad forwarded her plans. Yet she was rebuked by Guillaume, who would not hear of it.

2nd June 1070.

p7453595.jpg

“I truly am, a father of daughters.” The Duke said dejected as he strolled back from the women's quarters, as his wife Sadiqa had given birth. Another daughter was to be born to his name, she would be named Matilda, and like her sisters and bastard brother, unable to inherit the titles of the land. The Duke began to think and to scheme, and to pray, that his desires would come true.

God has indeed cursed your duke. Wow. It does happen though, obviously.

If all else fails, he may decide to (get an event that lets him) legitimize little Odon. His vassals won't like it much, but his vassals don't get a vote. ;)

And he is still being kind the by-blow, just to rub the salt into the wounds.

Oh, why did you have to heal Odon? You ruined my sick bastard joke! :( ;)

Hopefully the Duke will get an heir sometime soon, daugthers have their uses but you can't found a dynasty on them.
