The Duchy Doesn’t Spank – A Polish AAR

January 4th, 1066 – A New Dynasty! –
There he stood, with his crown placed upon his head robed in the finest clothing, Boleslaw King of Poland, Count of Cieszyn, Krakowskie, Sandomierskie, and Sacz, Highly regarded by the nobles in the country, a very generous and wise leader and ruler. Today was one of the most important days in the whole Kingdom, nobles from the Duchy of Silesia, Krakow, and Counties Lubusz, Czersk, and the Bischopric of Kaliskie, and Wielkopolska rode for Cieszyn to watch the event. Boleslaw, a bachelor for 31 years had found a suitor. He would marry with Lucja z Wislicy, a beautiful maiden. She was of a young age, and although this fact was shunned by a select group of nobles, it did not deter Boleslaw in the slightest. His heart was set; he had courted her secretly for a year. They first met in a garden outside the Royal House in Cieszyn, and now finally their Union would be known. The Kings of Hungary, and Bohemia were also present at this gathering, at special request of King Boleslaw. For he desired to make better ties with the Magyars and to further the ties between his half brothers in Bohemia, related through his ancestor Mieszko Pierwszy . The feast was huge, and the food was great, many drinks were drunk, and many tales told. It would be known as the happiest day in the Kingdom. After all the festivities ended the King and his Queen retired to their chambers for their own fun. And so a new age would be ushered into the Kingdom, for the King now had a chance to secure his line in the histories of Europe.
It was on January the 5th, that Boleslaw called together all his court members. He appointed his wife the courts Spymaster, and his Brother Kazimir Piast to be Marshall. Also he invited his vassals to discuss their scuttages and crown duties.

“Lords,” he began “as you know, I have just married, and am filled with great joy” he continued.
“As are we,” said the Duke of Silesia, Wszebor of Lower Silesia “it is a great day to see a friend and someone I consider a brother to be married.”
“A great day indeed!” put in the Arch-Bishop of Wielkopolska.
Boleslaw smiled at these kind words.
“Because of this fact, I feel as my loyal lords, I should ask you about your crown duties. Maybe the passion and joy of last nights feast is blurring my vision,” he joked.
“Or the alcohol,” Put in Kazimir, his brother, with a laugh.
The king laughed, and continued “Anyway, my brother, he is a character, so, I do not want to overcharge my loyal vassals, therefore, I would like to discuss acceptable rates. You all need to filed armies to keep robbers and thieves in line, and if you can’t afford to do so, the Kingdom will be weak.” He said. And this continued for much time, debates about how to tax the provinces and who should have more power. A great assembly of the towns leading Nobles came to the Royal Court to ask for more power. It was granted, but only after telling the peasants that tax breaks would come in the future if the Kingdom was Prosperous enough. A court of justice was to be built in a few months.
And so plans were put into motion the next few months were filled with marriages taking place. Kazimir had wed a wife, and were expecting a child. Finally on April 5th, 1066 of the year of our Lord, another great event: Lucja and Boleslaw were now expecting a child. A priest visited the court to bless the couple and reward them. A great feast again was held. Another glorious moment in the history of the Polish Kingdom, and the year ended with a peaceful close.

I got another update coming! So watch out! YO! It has more interesting things, things get heavy fast.

Well kicking pagan's asses will do. Your piety will rise and that's the main thing! :D

That's a crusade, of sorts. While western Europe knocks heads with the Islamic powers, you shall rid the world of the pagans! I like it :p

July 24, 1067
Boleslaw stood and watched the sun rise that morning. All was peaceful through the land and the light of the morning crept over the horizon. It entered the room from the left window, and Boleslaw stood and watched. He watched it creep in from the window, and steal away to the far wall. Chasing the dark, and old shadows away, and in there place illuminating designs on the floor, and casting new shadows for the day. It crept more, past the coat of arms and finally resting on his child’s face. It hung around the cloth that wrapped Bezprym, the child, like a crown or halo. Suddenly the tranquility of the moment was disrupted, his wife walked into the room to greet him.
“Boleslaw” she began, “I have some news.”
He perked his head up, “What is it?”
“We’re having another child.”
“Another one?” he asked, and suddenly got up. He ran to her and picked her up.
“Another one?!” he exclaimed, “God has truly blessed me!” He set her to the floor grabbed his cloak and ran through the halls. It seemed that again the Kingdom would be thrown into celebration. It would be a combined celebration for it had reached Cieszyn that Wszebor of Silesia’s wife was also bearing.

“What a great day”, began Boleslaw as the guests finally sat down to take their places.
“It seems as though the only thing we do in this Kingdom is to gather for feasts and celebrations!” he added. Everyone cheered at this. Boleslaw gave off a laugh.
“Now, I would like to announce that I, or rather, my great and beautiful wife and I” he looked over at Lucja, “are about to be parents again!” The whole assembly stood up with applause. Cheers of encouragement could be heard through out the hall. So, for the second time the Kingdom was gathered to celebrate the Kings great news. It seems as though this line would be a strong line in the chronicles of time.

After the party was finished and all the mess was cleared up Boleslaw retired into his chambers, with his Chancellor and Marshall, and a small man cloaked in a grey cloak, who looked like a weary traveler. There were many important things to discuss.
“Lords” he began “it has come to our attention that the count of Pzremyshl has decided to take a claim to the title of Count of Czersk. We have with us a special guest today” he motioned to the man in the cloak. “This is Vlad of Galich, the principality to our south. He is from the lands of Przemyshl and said he is prepared to dvulge information of where their garrisons are stationed and numbers of men. Now I know you may be wondering why this is being mentioned, but the Count of Czersk, has come to us for help. The count of Plock seems reluctant to offer armed protection, and I as King of this domain will gladly step in.”

“Your saying we should invade?” asked Herman (at least I think that’s his name?), Boleslaw's brother and Marshall of armed forces, “We haven’t a claim in that territory.” He added.
“I am aware brother, but trust me, our court writers can construe some point to be made, about our lineages being connected.”
“We cheat?” asked Herman surprised.
“Brother, if you ever inherit anything you will learn that politics is all cheating. Although I may seem a tranquil lamb, I can be a vicious wolf when my domain is threatened. Like a Shepard that protects his flock. You too will understand soon enough.” The terms were discussed and a claim to the seat of Przemyshl was made. Boleslaw could now willfully go to war. At a cot though for these were not pagans but Orthodox Christians, followers of the same Christ. So, Boleslaw in public notices prior to the attack, made reference to the Count of Przemyshl’s incestual relationship with a younger sister. And his heretical beliefs, saying he was not truly Orthodox but a “pagan devil worshipper”.

War was declared and the host of the Kingdom called up. Boleslaw’s good friend, Wszebor Duke of Silesia immediately offered up his regiments to fight for Boleslaw. A combined force of 3000 men moved onto Przemyshl, meeting the regiment of 580 on the filed of battle. The army of the Count, totally outnumbered had decided to go tooth and nail, and bring as many brave Polish Knights into hell with them. At first the archers covered the moving infantry. The cavalry moved up on the flank. The Counts troops entered into a square formation, with Cavalry on either side and Infantry in the front and the back, archers held centre. It was in the early hours of the morning and most villages in the province were already woken by the March of the Polish army. 3000 men bearing the banners of a foreign King do not go unnoticed in broad daylight. It was mid august, as the Count had put it to his troops, “A great day for a slaughter friends. May the carcasses of the fiendish pigs rot in the hot sun, and may the flies eat at their very souls!” And so the battle began. The Polish infantry rushed the box, drawing up the cavalry; the pike men formed their line at the last moment to intercept the charge. The Knights of Poland drew from the rear and along with the cavalry started the charge at the centre of the box, meeting no tough resistance on their way their, the charge was halted just 50 meters of the count. The count seemed unmoved by this, and decided to counterattack the Polish force. Him and his 20 knights raised their swords and charged forth. With a roar they came to clash with the Polish Knights. They stood no match, but fought on. Until the only one man was left, on horseback he ran too and fro, striking out at the Knights and swearing. Never coming close to hitting any of them he had gone mad. The count had lost sanity in not wanting to lose his domain. The Polish king rode out. The count steadied his horse and snarled at the King.
“Sir” began Boleslaw “I should like to continue the battle but unfortunately your own overlord Prince of Galich has left you without support. You are just one man surrounded by over 2500. Surrender and see another day.”
The count looked at him in contempt; his eyes were red with hate. He drew his saber and yelled something inaudible in a Russian dialect and charged the King. A man drew his bow but the King lifted his hand as a sign to hold. He drew his sword and shield up, steadied his horse and left with his own charge. They drew closer, and closer, 100 feet, 80 feet, 60 feet, 40 feet, 10, 9, 8… Until they were almost face to face, the Russian was just about to yell something at his enemy, but no sound came out. Just a choke and a cough were heard. Blood came out and flowed down his chin. He fell off his horse and landed on the dirt. His life left him with every breath. His last visions of the world were that of a horse that stood over him: a black steed bearing the emblem of a White eagle over a red background. So ended the War of Przemyshl, Boleslaw added a province to his domain, and his attention shifted to other lands; lands in the north. It was time for Poland to enter appear on the coast. Where heathens and pagans ran rampant.

Hmmm first polish aar! I will follow

"King of Poland and Lithuania" - how do you like this title? :D

All through the hall steps could be heard. A man ran and was panting and panting as he made his way along the stone wall. His shadow flickered and twisted along the floor. It was still early, and the man had a desperate mission. He approached the king’s room and ran in screaming twisting into the curtains and knocking over some lances and flags.

“Boleslaw King! Wake! Arise!”

At this Boleslaw sat upright and looked over at him

“What is the meaning of this, I’m in the middle of slumber.”

“It is urgent news from Silesia, Wszebor has taken ill, and the medicine man doesn’t think he’ll make it much longer. He requests you visit him.”

“Dear god, of course I will! Ready my things.”
His wife arose at this
“Boleslaw, whats going on?”

“I have to go,” he answered “Urgent matters in Silesia.”

And promptly he left, a wagon was being prepared for him but instead he threw a cloak over himself and mounted a horse and rode for the gates. His brother jumped to a steed and followed him out. They rode nonstop until reaching Wszebor’s palace.

“Where is he?” demanded Boleslaw as he entered the house of Wszebor. A guard jumped to his feet, “Who the hell are you, back off before I stick my saber into your gut.”

“Fool,” said a woman in the hall, “That’s your king, can you not recognize him by face. Don’t mind him, he’s tired, his Lord slumbers and is sickly” She said as she turned to Boleslaw. She led Boleslaw into the room where Wszebor lay, his son Sulislaw was present. Boleslaw entered the room. “Child” he said to Sulislaw “May I have a moment with your father?” The child got up and left. Boleslaw approached the bed. “Wszebor, I came as soon as I heard.”
“You didn’t have to come so soon.” Wszebor said through a choke and a cough.
“No for a friend no time is soon. You’ll be up and okay in no time, I’ll have the best medicine sent in form my kingdom personally, the best care.”
“No it’s not worth it. Last night I almost coughed myself into death. I can’t feel my legs. It’s harder to breathe. I’ll not make it the night. I might not even be alive at sunset. I came to ask you to insure that Silesia stays independent, that’s all I ask.”

“Do not even ask, Silesia has always been a loyal Duchy, she shall never be absorbed by the crown. She’ll self govern herself.”

“Good, and help my son, he’s very easily impressed upon and if anyone, you should be the one to impress upon him.”
“I shall treat him with great care.”

Wszebor started to violently cough, Boleslaw about opened his mouth to call help when Wszebor raised his hand.
“No” he coughed through to Boleslaw “No, I fade…” he said. “Sulislaw… Sulislaw, I’m home… come father is…” and with that he drew his last breath. Boleslaw stood up and moved away from the bed. He walked out of the room and Sulislaw could tell by the coughing he heard and the way the King looked, something was awry. He ran towards the door but Boleslaw stopped him and dropped to a knee.
“Son,” he began slowly piecing together the softest words with which to crush the childs life, “your father was a great man. He led the Duchy of Silesia in a great way. But he has passed.”

“DEVIL!” yelled the child as he pushed Boleslaw away “You bastard! You killed him! With what you said! You probably choked him!” the child ran in the room crying. At this Boleslaw got up and went downstairs where he met his brother. They mounted up and rode for Cieszyn.
“I wonder what he’ll do now…” said Boleslaw on the road.
“Who? The child?” asked Herrman his brother.
“Pure Sulislaw, nothing left of his father but a cold corpse. I wonder what the Duchy of Silesia will do now?”
“Only God knows Boleslaw, only God knows…”
