Well, it all went as so... 36' as Japan. My first thoughts were to focus on an actual pearl harbor attack. So I started production asap on 3 new carriers, balanced production, economy and resources. Signed some diplomacy trading deals, all went ok. Started researching air and naval techs and built some destroyers. Cranked up consumer goods to get a hefty amount of cash coming in. Kept it all going for a couple of years. Building ships, planes and infantry as much as my budget would allow. Then built 4 harbors and a couple of airbases.

Now, 41' had arrived and my planned pearl harbor attack was coming on the horizon. Found out the hard way, 3 of my 6 carriers did not have the range. So this left me with only 3 to conduct the pearl harbor attack. I had 3 carriers and 4 other surface ships, took whatever I could that had the range which was not many. In late november of 41', my fleet set sail for the hawaiian islands commanded by a high ranked admiral, who I don't remember the name.

Now the excitement had built up when my fleet arrived and I seen pearl harbor full of ships. Ok, so here it goes... dec 7th 1941, 0300 I pause, check the weather, all is ok. I wait 2 hours and at 0500 I execute a DOW on USA. In just 2 short hours at 0700, my planes hit pearl harbor. Tora! Tora! Tora! I managed to inflict some damage but nothing like I had planned, ojnly sank 1 ship I think, but damaged the others pretty bad. If I would have had the 6 carriers, I really would have sank several ships.

Ok, now I pull immediately out of pearl harbor and head back. As japan had thought, is how I thought, I fear I had awoke a sleeping giant. That folks I did. Followed was 4 or 5 major naval battles, I lost every one of them. Within 2 years, I had lost all of my carriers and several capital ships. I was down to only 20 warships.

This was only the beginning... The worse is yet to come. Started by losing island after island in the pacific, one after another. About 70% of the islands became USA controlled. Then USA landed in asia and spread like wild fire. Ok, so I fight them back and forth there, win some lose some. Then they sneak in and land an armored division in Shikoku. This was the beginning of the fall of japan. When this happened, I turned all efforts to retake shikoku. Then I was facing air attacks from US planes stationed at shikoku. This was not getting any easier.

Next thing I know, Japan's homeland was turning blue, piece by piece, I was losing territories. US troops and tanks were landing and appearing in more and more areas. In late 43', US had owned 80% of my homeland. Then all of korea, and 60% of my asia held areas. I literally had nothing and I mean nothing left to fight with by the end of 44'. So here is was, I stood, with a blank look on my face aboard the battleship missouri in tokyo bay signing the document of surrender, in oct of 44'. What an embarrassing defeat. Folks... yes this was the AI that I played against, furthermore on the normal level. I have never lost HoI like this before.

What Agg/Dif level you are playing?

USA is really giant and can wiin Japan easily. In my AAR they sank ALL Imperial Japan Navy ship in just one year. By the June 1943 they have made invasion to Japan mainland. Japan managed to sink only few US capital ships.

In single player I find it impossible to play without having the game pausing when a naval battle starts (message settings). I also try to split the forces up in a lot of task forces so i can easier pull out hurt ships, winning with less casualties. If you didnt play that way I hope the tipps help some.

The trick to playing Japan is to conquer China quickly (it can be done by 1938, and soon I'll have the AAR to prove it). So long as Japan is not at war with anyone in 1941, relations in the USA should not deteriorate significantly, especially if you pump cash into your relations. In fact, the US will not even launch an oil embargo unless Japan is at war with some other power, and will not attack Japan while the European Axis is still intact (obviously, Japan must refrain from joining the Axis to make this happen). The real difficulty with Japan is the plodding pace of research, and the prioritizing where your puny IC should be concentrated. I've managed to survive to 1949 (No Time Limit Mod), am at peace with the US still, and am on the verge of conquering the SU, all without reloading the game. Since I have to dedicate a good chunk of IC to replacements, preparations for war with the US are slow at the moment. I'll have an AAR on this in a little while, after my American AAR is finished.

Yeah,i got all china at hard/furious by 1939,but i had gigantic manpower problems. In 1942,i declared war on allies+usa.Gosh,i tought my original navy was enough to contain them, lol,i got owned till i got naval bombers,
who are overpowered btw.

Are you serious? I must copy your USA AI to implement it in my game...

My experience of Pearl Harbor... playing from 1941 (I played several 1936 but felt not challenging), I spent half a year to bring Chinese to knees, then I hit Pearl Harbor with all my ships with 2500+ range...(almost all capital ships)

The result is daunting. In less than 1 week US Pacific Fleet is history. I sank 3CVs, 13BBs and 14CAs, with only losing 1CV, 2BBs, 2BCs and 4CAs. Half a month later my combined fleet caught another US taskforce aiming at taking back Pearl Harbor, and sank another 2 more CVs.

I have that saved game just before Pearl Harbor with me so I later played around with it a lot. In most cases I can take out the US Pacific Fleet in a few days with mediocre damage. If the difficulty is hardest I might not be able to achieve so because all those crazy Naval Bombers. But anything less than hardest the US Pacific Fleet is doomed

I also found if I take out Wake before striking on Pearl Harbor I would have much less loss because now I can put all my screen forces with my fleet.

Carrier strike on port is pretty useless in this case. You just sit your fleet outside Pearl Harbor and the Yankees will come out bravely fighting you, and got blown to the bottom of Pacific Ocean
