I've got a problem and read the self-help thread to figure out what I needed to post. Here it is:

I am using Victoria Revolutions 1.04 or whatever, I just bought Vic and Rev from GamersGate. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium, it updated to its newest version a few days ago. I'm using a homemade PC with:

Intel duo processor clocked at 1.8ghz(e2100?)
4 Gigs of PC6400 RAM (800mhz?)
Geforce 8800GTS 640MB, newest drivers
on-board AC '97 HD sound; what almost everyone has by default
Whatever the newest Direct X version is (10 or 10.1 or something?)
99GB free on my HDD
22inch Widescreen LG Monitor (Flatron W2252TQ at 1680x1050)

I originally was worried about my installation; I got that problem everyone else had, or at least I thought. None of the things my installation popped up with actually prevented me from installing the game, a window would pop up telling me a file was read-only(one of them was the Mexico event file if I'm not mistaken). Had nothing to do with the Rohn problem, or whatever that was. Anyway, thought I might just mention that detail.

The game starts up fine, loads fast, everything's great--if a bit low-res. :) I click on single-player, being an EUIII vet, and thinking I'm ready to jump in. Well, I click Serbia as my country, and then click Start Game. The screen flickers black, and then Victoria goes into pseudo-window mode(in its native resolution it is smaller than my desktop's), staying black, and a window pops up telling me that an error has occurred and the program must shutdown. Here is the details windows picked up from the crash:

I don't know what this means or how to fix it. I tried running the install in French and got the same weird hick-ups in the install process, but the game worked fine. I rebooted, tried to play the game again, and now it won't. Huh? Any help would be very appreciated....considering I just bought the game. :)

Thanks in Advance,
Nick

Try renaming the game's avi folder (e.g. avi.old).
I strongly recommend not installing the game in Program Files in Vista.
Can you post the exact messages you got while installing?
Did you install Revolutions into the same location as Victoria, overwriting the original files?
Did you install any patches or OHGamer's hotfixes? (The hotfixes are also strongly recommended.)
What scenario are you trying to run?

I'll try the tips you suggested. I don't understand what's wrong with the Program Files folder, but I'll uninstall it and put it in C:\Paradox or something.
Revolutions installs into the same location, and any scenario doesn't work. I'll be back in half an hour with an update on my progress.

Update: Installing into C:\Victoria; no problems with Victoria.
During the Revolutions install, which goes into the same folder, I get some messages. What I can see of the messages during installing goes like this--

ReadOnly File Detected
An option you selected requires that files be installed to your system or files be uninstalled from your system, or both. A read-only file, C:\Victoria\db\events\exploration.txt, was found whlie performing the....
--That's all I can read in the window(this being the first, global_revolutions.txt the 2nd, mexico.inc 3rd, zulu inc 4th) , I can see a little bit of the upper parts of the rest of the text, but the window is too small and doesn't expand. I figured I'd just click Yes to each of these.
I started the game up fine again, chose Sweden for the Grand Campaign, Start, Crash.

Update 2: Extracted the hotfix properly and tried Germany on 1881, Start, Crash.

Update 3: Changed the avi folder to avi.old. Picked Italy for 1861, Start....Works. Repeated with Sweden in 1881...Works again. Well done mate! Thanks a lot! Haha. What a weird game.

Vista has a 'feature' called UAC which tries to prevent any unauthorized programs from writing to certain protected folders such as Program Files. Unfortunately programs written before Vista do not always work well with this.
