1936 - Employment up, the economy moving, and the first cross country highway and rail system by 1939!
President Roosevelt made big promisses this new years eve 1935, in a White House gala of epic proportions. Several notable figures in political and defense circles attended as well as the Vice President, and Chiefs of staff. The mood was festive, an deviceingly small but skilled classical trio of string musicans provideing backdrop to the scene.
Dinner and dancing were the order of the evening, even formor chief of staff of the United States Army Douglas MacAruthor taking to the floor with his soon to be wife Jean Marie Faircloth. Afterwards the president had announced that " Excutive Order: 4435-35 has passed and is now official... the Coast to Coast program begins hireing tomarrow. True to this administrations promise durning the election years... /There Will/ be a fully modernized rail and highway system in all 48 states!!! Each state will have an airport!!! This program will also extend to San Juan and Peuerto Rico, Colton and the canal area, and the pacific islands. By 1939 we will be connected like never before. This program at it's bare minimum will employ 10,000 men per million in every state in our union. "
:: The reaction was a thunderous roar... this is what the nation needed, a major goal... a chance for the shattered economy to heal. Let's hope the rest of the world affords us that as well... surely one world war was enough? ::
MARCH 5th The Oval Office, Cabinet meeting for spring of 36. All members in attandance.
FDR: " Good Morning Gentlemen... let's go with the usual order. "
:: Cordell Hull was first to stand and speak, as secretary of state ::
( Here is a quick bio for all intrested Hull's Bio )
Well Mr.President, with recent german military moves into the Rineland the situation in europe is somewhat tense... apprently the French and British are letting it happen without anything more than objection. Both of there embassadors loged formal complaints with the leauge of nations. Beyond that... this situation is quiet... a bit too quiet but if they are having half the economic woes we are... I don't see aggression in this year or next, not with the state of there respective economies.
FDR- " Let's hope they keep it that way... Now I keep hearing about this apprent Coup in Japan... Counzans, you have anything yet? "
:: The minister of intelligance stands, and speaks. ::
" The reports I've recived are sketchy at best sir... apprently there is a coup of some sort going on, and rumors of a new prime minister being elected are rampant through the embassy staff. I would say the upper echelons of the army and navy brass behind it, judgeing by there lack of response to orders to quell upriseings mentioned in one memo. "
:: FRD nods, processing the information :: Look into it asap. Henry what do you have for me?
:: Henery Morgenthau began on a subject touched on a few years before :: The mass esembly plants will soon be poping up around the country, particulary in the northeast, chicago and detroit region, also the west coast. We can expect military industrial contractors to begin taking Ford's lessons in mass production. Also the big new this is synthetics apprently... composite materials and such, one area of study called Polymersion in particular sounds appealing. First methods for synthetic Oil and Coal are being looked into... then a substiute for all these rare materials we will need for the growing econmy. With the coast to coast program in effect, and the economy turning around, we are looking to make progressive gains in the fields of industrial science, to support growth in all sectors.
:: FDR takes several notes quickly, noding :: sounds good, I'll keep tabs on the progress. :: Turning towards Malin Craig, William Standly and Oscar Westover. :: How are we looking on our security needs... this german movement has me asking... I'm almost regreting the cutbacks in the navy.
:: Malin Craig takes the floor. :: Besides the disbanding of the First Cavalry Division at Fort Bliss, there have been no changes, our budget is several million over... we've used the money to research better weapontry and conduct field exercises to keep our three remaining divisions in fighting contidion. :: He then looks to Standly, who begins with the department of the Navy briefing. ::
We have sent all of our outdated destroyers on convoy duty sir, this cuts back significantly on costs... we are also researching new classes of ship... the pocket battleship has promise, once we can build facilities for there construction. Also a new class of battleship in the works... will see production next year. :: Hands out some information packets :: I give you the North Carolina class Battleship. All construction on time sir, the expected launch dates still valid. With the Jap's walking out on the london naval conferance I have ordered the first marine division to full wartime capacity, and have recalled the second and third Marines as well. We have a plan of action to have the 4th - 6th marines ready to ship by new years 1938 at the lattest.
:: After an uneventful airforce briefing, the meeting was finished, It would be another year and diffrent political landscape till the next. America was safe... for now. ::
