I loved seeing the screenshots in the Empires and Species dev diary, but one thing's been bothering me, and that's the general tone offered by the GUI. Of course, I realise the game is still in alpha and the GUI is going to be one of the last things to be polished off, but it's still something of a concern.

In my experience, almost every sci-fi game of any kind has a GUI that's this same kind of cold grey-blue (sometimes orange, for some reason) minimalist faux-digital aesthetic. Older games sometimes mixed things up with a cold grey-blue mechanical aesthetic mixed in. The fonts are always something minimalist and sans-serif (although, I do love the font set Paradox is using currently). Scanlines appear on everything from portraits to icons (see the extreme bottom left). Everything is very clean, but very inhuman.

To me, this tends to make the world in these games feel a little lonely. We spend our hours staring at blue-grey space while a blue-grey interface devoid of flourishes. Games like Ascendancy, Master of Orion II, Galactic Civilizations II, or even Alpha Centauri all make me feel like I'm looking at a civilization nearing death, as it's clearly been generations since they killed all the artists (I love all those games, but still...). I want an interface that shows me that my civilization is flourishing.

Personally, I think Paradox can do better than that. I've always been wowed by the beautiful GUIs in EU3 and 4, CK2, and both Victoria's, and they make me feel that my empire is really going places. Perhaps something in a more space baroque tone would be good, echoing Dune or Warhammer 40,000. Or maybe some more typical Paradox flourishes like ribbons and banners could be used against the digital look, combining imperialist grandeur with a techy look. I'm just thinking aloud really. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has thoughts on this.

I've never given a single thought to any of this before. But it is now clear to me that OP is right at every count. Paradox, please!

The GUI in the screenshots is amazing IMO and I really hope that it remains. Maybe just give people some more color choices.

I like the look of the GUI. Some of the icons are pretty meh, but I'm pretty sure they've still got dozens of iterations to go through before release.

I have to agree with a lot of the OPs point.

As someone involved in designing GUIs (for non-entertainment purposes), psychologically greys and blues are assigned to areas where no intervention is required. Apparently it indicates lack of significance and draws little interest...

I agree, and honestly, I have been thinking about this ever since Endless Space, with its rather uninteresting UI:

I personally would like to see something more charming, or as the OP said, something that demonstrated the arts and aesthetics of my civilization as if it was going through some artistic renaissance. Add some colorful curtains, banners, or beautifully carved columns, like the Greek UI of Europa Barbarorum II, a mod for Medieval 2 Total War (I have always been fascinated by that UI.

I can also see the player being able to choose the visuals of his species' UI in Stellaris. In the last DD, the one about creating your own empire and species, it was show that you can choose the background image. I see that as a way to choose the UI too.

This is something that has really bothered me about the most recent glut of space 4x games and most sci-fi in general.

I get that sleek minimalism and sterile colours are 'in' right now for representing the future, but by God is it dull to look at! One of the main reasons I stopped playing Endless Space is because I just got sick of how 'lonely' the UI made me feel.

Please Paradox, if nothing else at least give us the option to give the UI some flare!

Yeah. Perhaps GUI should depend on government type / traits of your race / main ethica of your empire / race.

I don't see this happening outside DLCs and even there I would not expect more than one addition (for Empires and other govs that would prefer renaissance-like art). GUI designing is more than just drawing some panels and throwing them in.

Well, at that point it is just that, 90% of job is already done. Still hard though.

I have actually really liked the look of the game in the pics we have seen so far. And even if a change might make it look better, it's hard to say for sure without seeing it first. So I say why risk it.

i do not mind the GUI like it is now. but i do agree with point Mattastic makes. Most space games feel cold (like the cold of space :)) so anything that Paradox can do to make sure the GUI doesnt grow stale and cold over hours and hours of playing would be great!

I hate Endless Space UI so much... But there is one UI I hate even more - of Endless Legend because it is supposed to be at least partially fantasy game with no more advanced tech than automatic crossbows and the UI here is STILL inhumane and cold!

Oh, an I have found it extremely unintuitive.

Generally I like Stellaris UI from what have I seen so far, but I have still upvoted OP as some fancy ribbons would be cool :)

It would be amazing if the UI's theme depended on your government... Cold and grey for scientific dictators, golden for corporate democracies, etc... Art team, you got work to do !

Great idea! Like it is in CK2. There could at least be three different themes, one each for monarchies, oligarchies and democracies.
