Heil and velkomin to The Hammer and the Cross. This will be the second forum game I’ve created and hopefully it’s just as much fun as the last one. This game will begin in the year 865 AD in England. During this time England is divided into four Kingdoms of Saxons, East Anglia, Mercia, Northumbria and Wessex. To the north of these civilized realms are the Picts a savage people who are dirt poor and have a love of raiding and pillaging but no stomach for real war. To the west lay the Welsh a barbaric people who trace their lineage back to the original inhabitants of the island. The Welsh harbor a deep hatred for the Saxons an enemy which they have been fighting for centuries. Wales is divided into many petty kingdoms with very little central authority although one king shows promise Rhodri ap Merfyn, if he can unite the kingdoms the Britans may be able to reclaim their island. To the south lays Francia a land of slavers, warriors and, traders they produce the best swords, armor and, ships in the area. And to the east lay the Vikings who recently landed in East Anglia. The Vikings have been harassing England for years but now they have landed in great numbers. The inept king of East Anglia has made peace with their army giving them lodging, gold and, horses. They now wait for more men and prepare for further conquest.

In The Hammer and the Cross religion is a very important factor of the game being your religion which will decide many things about your relations with the various factions on the islands. In this game both Christianity and Nordic Paganism will have a conversion factor, they will both start out low but as monks are slaughtered and churches pillaged or Viking leaders adopt the Christian faith in order to make peace with their Saxon neighbors this factor will go up or down.

In this game money is extremely important it will determine how large of an army you can support how happy your followers are with you and how big of a threat or target you are for your enemies. Speaking of armies each army has a percentage next to it in the stats. This percentage reflects the quality of the army. Their equipment, experience level, and morale are all reflected in this stat.

Players will be allowed to choose anyone be it someone they invented or a historical character from this time. If you invent a character your starting place and ethnicity will have a large effect on your beginning stats. As an example a Viking may start with a long ship crewed by thirty-five battle hardened warriors. Meanwhile a Saxon could start with eighty men most of whom are farmers untrained in battle (though about 10 of those guys will be your house hold guard and therefor real warriors).

Morale is an important factor when leading any army if a lord is generous with his followers his followers are far more likely to follow him into any battle. But if a lord is greedy and ungenerous with the spoils of war his followers may desert him or even kill him. In addition to all of this prestige is also a key factor in this game. The more prestige you have the easier it will be to recruit men and the more opportunities you may have to say gain a kingdom.

Land and naval battles will be decided by several major factors first, the tactics and deployments you use. When you send your orders tell me how you intend to deploy your troops and, what you wish for them to do. Secondly the terrain on which you will be fighting on. And lastly the quality of your troops compared to the quality of the enemy troops. Also if you do an epic battle speech or IC I may tack on a point or two to your roll.

Sending orders is simple just send me two orders they can be about whatever your wish them to be. Each turn covers four months so keep this in mind for campaigns as your army may begin to melt away if your farmers need to get back home for the harvest.

Example Order
Subject: Ragnar Lothbrok 793
#1 Raid Lindisfarne, kill every priest there, steal all their gold. Divide the spoils equally among the crew.
#2 Return home use the spoils of the raid to build another ship.

Name:Melkolf Ragnarson
Ethnicity: Norse
Religion:Nordic
Bio:
Melkolf Ragnarson son of Melrolf, is a man of great strength but his intelligence is far greater than any man who proclamims themselves Norsemen. Melkolf understood in his world strength mattered more than anything else but, the tales of Ragnar Lodbrok tell differently as he was able to not win by strength alone. He was able to defeat his foes by using his mind by employing plots and other stratagems to secure his survival in the Norse world, Melkolf wanted to do the same but he also didn't want to look weak to his family and friends. So he gathered a group of his men and joined the great heathen invasion of Northumbria and secured a foothold in a place of what the Northumbrians called Edinburgh, from that point Melkolf Ragnarson shall start his conquest of Britannia but, first he must keep his eyes on the North as well or something far worse than them would derive from the rumored highlands.

Starting Place Edinburgh, Lothian (Northumbria)

Edmund_zpsd3ac833e.png

Name: King Edmund

Age: 24

Ethnicity: Anglo Saxon

Religion: Christian

Bio: King Edmund was born in 841 to Ealhhere, brother-in-law to King Æthelstan of Kent, and Edith (Æthelstan’s sister). Edmund was crowned on December 25th 855, succeeding Æthelweard of East Anglia at the age of fourteen. He was crowned by Bishop Humbert of Elmham, who would become a trusted advisor and friend throughout his reign.

During his reign he was careful to administer fair and equal justice to all of his subjects. He was also unbending to those who tried to flatter him in an attempt to gain flavor, basing his decisions on merit instead. In addition to being a fair ruler, he was a devout Christian and took the time to completely memorize the psalter. He applied the churches teachings to his rule whenever possible.

In the winter of 865, ten years in to his reign at the age of 24, the Great Heathen Army landed in East Anglia. Rather than risk the death of his people or a threat of forced conversion, he made a deal with the army, promising them horses and winter lodging in exchange for peace.

Starting Place: East Anglia

A painting of Tarfoll selling slaves in Iberia

Name: Tarfoll "Odin-Eye" Hagridssohn

Ethnicity: Norse

Religion: Norse

Bio: Born in Heiðabýr in 830, Tarfoll grew up as a normal Viking boy, even if he had a flair for trading. That flair got him in trouble when he conned one of the largest boys in Heiðabýr out of his second favourite wooden sword for a single ball of coloured clay. This resulted in him getting attacked by the boy (after being beaten by his father for being stupid) and losing an eye. The good news is that girls dug the scars and Tarfoll broke the boy's collarbone, arguably a more damning wound.

In his early years he repeatedly raided the Romuvan held Baltics until he acquired a decently sized herd of thralls. This is when Tarfoll entered the slave-trading business, his calling. He created contacts across Lotharingia, Scandinavia, Iberia and both East and West Francia. It was well known by 865 that if one did not pay back Tarfoll, their lands would be raided and an equivilent worth of people sold into slavery, plus interest. However the up-and-coming events of Angle Isles has peaked the interest of Tarfoll, and he and his slavers are ready to seize anything not held down.

Starting Place: Heiðabýr (Hedeby)

Name: Baldwin I "Iron Arm", Count of Flanders
Ethnicity: Frankish
Religion: Christian
Biography: Originally ruler of a small County in Flanders and a fearsome warrior and leader of men in the service of the King of West Francia, Baldwin rose to prominence when he eloped with Judith, young widow of two Kings of Wessex and daughter of King Charles the Bald. Initially enraged by this Charles attempted to capture the couple. When this failed he ordered his bishops to excommunicate them which they promptly did, however Baldwin and his new wife made for Rome where they successfully pleaded their case with Pope Nicholas. Finally conciliated with Baldwin King Charles gave him rule over all Flanders as a dowry. Since then Baldwin has fought off several Viking raids and acquired some new territory in Flanders. He remains one of the most steadfast supporters of the King and is now ruler of one of the major West Francian fiefs. With the beginning of the Viking Invasion of England Baldwin began keeping close watch on the island to his north as such a nearby base of operations for the Vikings would be most damaging to his own fief.

Name: Charles de Baudion
Ethnicity: French
Religion: Roman Catholic
Bio: The third son of Count de Baudion, Charles had a relatively bleak future. Growing up, he became quite effective with a sword, and had a natural affinity to administration. When he turned 16, Charles managed to convince his father to give him a relatively large sum of money, allow him to carve his own name out in the world. On his travels, Charles came under the tutorage of an old, fairly wealthy, slaver, who taught Charles everything he needed to know about the slave trade. Upon the death of the old slaver, Charles took over his network. Combining both the old mans fortune, and the money from his father, Charles set about creating a great network through out Europe, and the British Isles. With the blessing of the Count of Flanders, Charles set up his main base of operations in Brugge. While he does hire Saxon, and Norse mercenaries, the core of his operation are French knights, and former solders, close friends, and loyal to Charles. Charles main base is in Brugge, and he has several major networks through out Britain, and has contacts within Europe, including Spain, where he can sell slaves too.

Now, with the pagan invaders at his shores, Ælla has allied himself with the former King Osberht and looks outside of his kingdom for allies.
