Eochu1121.gif

Eochu I Ui Canannain

(Eng.: Haughey I)
(Lat.: Achaius I)

Born: 17.3.1099, Dublin, Ireland
Died: 24.6.1153, Dublin, Ireland

King of Ireland 1121-1153
Duke of Ulster 1121-1139
Duke of Leinster 1121-1139
Duke of Deheubarth 1131-1153
Count of Tir Eoghan, Dublin and Laigin 1121-1153
Count of Tir Connail 1121-1139
Count of Isle of Man 1138-1139
Count of Northumberland 1140-1153
Count of Galway 1150-1152

GillaPátrac I was maybe the first King of the whole Ireland from the Ui Canannain dynasty but it was Eochu I the second King who made Ireland a Kingdom. He built castles, roads, harbors, schools and libraries. He expanded the influence of his Kingdom into Wales and Scotland. He actually destroyed the Kingdom of Scotland and made an Archbishop the ruler.

Eochu I could be called 'the Great' was it not for the fact that he actually lost the Scottish War to his own vassal. But more on this later.

In his youth his teachers saw already a great future for Eochu. He was a lot smarter than the average kids in all fields. He became a knowledged tactician and a great warrior. Eochu succeeded his father when he was only 21 years old. Although very young he became a just ruler.

Eochu married three times. His first wife was Kenwa al-Jamali the daughter of his sister Una and the marshal of the Kingdom. They had three children. The only son was Enri (b: 1120) his heir. The daughters ware Brigit (b:1122) and BenMuman (b:1124) who both married great knights of the Kingdom.
Kenwa died in 1146 so he married again to a young lass AElfthryth Sulayman the daughter of one of his courtiers. He only had one kid with her Domnall (b:1147) who inherited the Dukedom of Deheubarth upon the death of his father. The young queen died in childbirth in 1148. Eochu than married Marsail O Conghalaigh. Marsail was only 2 years younger than the King and pretty old to be married. Some historians believe that she was the love of his life but she couldn't give him an heir. She indeed never had any children but if they had any relationship weeks or years before their marriage can only be speculated on.

Situation at the start

Eochu inherited the whole island. He has the two richest provinces but they are well underdeveloped compared to the bigger island and the main land.

His deeds

The Early years (1121 - 1136)

Upon his inheritance Eochu decided to built up the economy, stability and some treasury that could be used in future wars.
He built two small castles, in Dublin and Laigin the first two on the island.
He built roads, churches, libraries and harbors in all his provinces in all these years. The stability was never higher and the treasury was enormous.

In 1131 Eochu took an opportunity and declared war on the heretic Duke of Deheubarth, after two rather small battles that ware easily won he made himself King and appointed the son of the old Duke as the count of the provinces in the south of Wales.

The small wars (1137-1144)

In 1137 Eochu took another opportunity to enlarge his influence by declaring war on the independent duke of Normandy. The dispute was over the Isle of Man. The war was short and ended in only 3 months. The Isle was added to Eochu's personal domain.

Three years later Eochu conquered the independent count of Northumberland and added it to his own domain. Later the county would become very important as the base for the Scottish Wars.

In August 1142 Eochu tried to seize the land of the Duke of Moray, but he was too late as the King of Scotland managed to do that just before Eochu. Eochu never forgot the King and swore that day revenge.
And he had his revenge years later.
But the King of Scotland had many connections and on 15 December of 1144 he convinced his kin the Pope of Rome to excommunicate Eochu.

The Scottish War (1144-1152)

But that didn't stop Eochu in any way.
Preparations ware made for the war for more than six years. In July 1150 Eochu declared war on the King of Scotland. The young Scottish King decided imminently to assassinate Eochu but it only left a wound on the King.

Eochu's army was divided. One half of the army was sent to liberate the county of Galway that was lost due to diplomacy years before and the other half was to quickly conquer the the Duke of Galloway.
Both succeeded in their objectives. Galway was added to personal domain of the King and the Duke of Galloway was made a vassal.

But it took more time than Eochu thought it would and it made it possible for the Scottish King to mobilize his troops and attack the Island.
On 11th of June 1151 the great Battle of Mide took place. The Scottish King Cilline had a bit more than 8.000 troops and Eochu around 7.600 but The Irish army had more than 1.000 knights while the Scots none.

(over 3.000 died in the epic battle)

Eochu defeated Cilline that day due to his strategy and his knights.
But he didn't manage to either kill or capture the Scot witch lost him the war to his own vassal the ArchBishop of Meath.
While Eochu went conquering Scotland, the ArchBishop captured the Scottish King and made him abandon the title in favor of the ArchBishop.

The War was over, Scotland was defeated and divided between Ireland and the ArchBishop. Eochu won all the battles but lost to his own now ex-vassal.

Although the ArchBishop has the same last name he's not connected to our dynasty.

In 1152 Eochu was planning to go to war with the smart ArchBishop but he fell ill in November. A year later in June he died to to illness at the age of 54.
He was succeeded by his son the Duke of Ulster Enri.

OOC: :( the Scottish AI accepted a peace offer from my vassal before mine :(

Suicidal kings! I love CK. Excellent stuff

Does the son still have that awesome marshal of 35 points? He might come in handy when he will revenge his father on the archbishop.
