The Highest Estate

Introduction

Perusing through all the Kaiserreich AARs, I found a distinct lack of Middle Eastern AARs, and more specifically the Ottoman AARs. I was inspired by the mod and the nation. The Highest Estate will be an AAR about the Ottoman Empire and it's inhabitants during the Kaiserreich era in the Kaiserreich mod. I will be playing on either Normal/Normal or Hard/Normal because I haven't quite understood my playing capabilities quite yet. The format will switch between history book and narrative/letters to tell the story of various players in the political and decision making processes in the Ottoman Empire. The AAR will include extensive research - and you can expect a considerable amount of gameplay as well. Keep in mind this is my first AAR, and I'm not as experienced as some of you strategists. Hope you enjoy.

Prologue Part I: The Warring Factions

İyi akşamlar,
Merhaba, Birinci Ferik Mustapha Pasha.

The Kars Ordusu and Kafskhaya Ordusu, two unassigned attachments previously placed under your able command, have been placed under the command of, Ferik Cemal Aga Pasha, to quell Armenian skirmishes near Kars. These fine Turks have been ordered to follow the mountains of Trebizond to the outpost of Akyaya where they will be supervised until further orders.

I have placed numerous requests for extra shoes for these divisions, because inadequate supplies have halted their advance through the mountains several times. I hope that my requests were not deliberately ignored, and that a satisfactory reply is imminent. Several of the men have been sent home because of the ailments associated with their insufficient footing. I ask you to give my word and greetings to the armaments officer in Kars and to assure that these soldiers receive proper investment.

Calvary attachments under myself, Ferik Ali Fuat Pasha, of these two divisions have been transported to Ankara for further dispatch to the capital. Thank you.

The Young Turk War Room

There was no other word for it. Chaos had engulfed the already congested war room. Coffee stains adorned vintage tables, heavy, unevenly stacked books littered chairs, and a whitewash of crumpled, incomplete, and discarded war plans blanketed the floor like crisp leaves in the middle of Autumn. Standing ankle-deep in the uncomfortable paper shrubbery, six members of Ali Fuat Pasha’s war advisory board fervently tore through case study after periodical after strategic analysis.

Meanwhile, Ali Fuat nonchalantly smoked a cigarette, perched comfortably along the rough steel plating of the Turkish war department building’s roof. He glanced at his watch; 15 hours until the formal declaration of war and the mobilization. Marching through the fumes of his cigarette smoke were eerie images of young Turkish soldiers striding through rhythmic tears of artillery fire. Much like the military orders transmitted to him through nervous messengers, his consciousness and attention continually slipped away from him. Despite the orders’ vital significance, he tossed them aside and instead surveyed his troops. Compared to his past war cabinets, this latest one was unprecedented in both number and inexperience; two thirds were graduates at the top of their class. Their lack of spirit and ineptitude, however, obscured any indication of their intelligence. Whereas the traditionally small squads allowed him ample time to provide individual attention to each recruit, the revolutionary size of Ali Fuat’s division made this impossible. There simply wasn’t enough time. To make matters worse was the fact that the reformist group was under close watch by the King’s forces.

Ali Faut Pasha in Military Uniform, 1932
Ali Fuat could only watch as disorder and time slowly championed his destruction. His previous colleagues in the national army described him as brilliant, a leader whose skill would greatly contribute to the Empire’s future rise in international politics. The king even referred to him as the future for Allah’s armed forces. Ali Fuat could not help but feel the pressures of maintaining the king’s trust and his reformist allies’ plans bearing down on him. His double agent status instilled in him a sense of guilt and unworthiness unmatched in his short life. He would have to learn to distinguish between his friends and his enemies and he would have to learn quickly. Otherwise, in 15 hours, destiny or the din of gunfire would decide for him…

Excellent piece of writing. Short and sweet; subscribed.

@YourWorstNightmare: Although controversial, the Young Turk movement was one of the only reform movements that could challenge the "Old Guard" movement under the "monarchy," at least in the early age. For now, Ali Fuat must choose between these two groups, lest a new group rise and challenge both these institutions.

Merhaba, Birinci Ferik Mustapha Pasha,

Hopefully by the time you receive this letter, Mr. Nihayl Pasha's diplomatic mission has achieved it's goals in breaking diplomatic ties and declaring war on the nation of Armenia. As stated in my last message, I have requested two calvary attachments from Mr. Usmet's leading division to be diverted from battle to the capital, where are to be charged with guarding the Sultan from the supposed Young Turk resurgence. The superiority and elite status of these troops has warranted such a request. I also have been relocated to the capital to overlook these troops, however I have received command from the Sultan and his subordinates to enter a plan of invasion. The 1st Kars attachment is to attack Yerevan behind enemy liens with the other troops running offensive procedures. When the 1st front line is reached (by the fixed date of January 30th), diplomatic measures with the government of Armenia will commence. If such a settlement is not reached, a full total war campaign will subdue the Armenians to submission. God be with you on the battlefield, and may you crush the Armenians and their allies.

Signed,
Ali Faut Pasha
