"Finally there is Peace"
"Without France, everything fell apart. Perfect for communism" -J. Stalin
After the atomic destruction of most of France, there was little reason to continue the war. The U.S., sick of all the wars in Europe, convinced France and Russia to sign a peace treaty, litterally at gunpoint, threatening to use it's ICBMs on either side if it continued fighting.
Fearing the obvious spread of communism in the ruins of France, President Truman announced the Marshall Plan, an economic aid package to France, Britain, and Germany. All three countries accepted. Over the next 10 years, France would recover, but the damage had been done. Millions of French citizens had been killed, most major cities had been leveled, it's colonial empire had disintegrated, and the Allies refused to accept France back into their military alliance.
With the destruction of France's influence over Europe, the United States emerged as the dominant Western power. It's massive economic, scientific, and military power made it a superpower. Russia, still lagging behind greatly, tried to catch the Americans. Realizing the futility of any hostile relations with the U.S., Stalin met with Truman in 1950 to work out a United Nations.
"Finally there is peace in our world. The sacrifices of untold millions shall not be in vein. The forces of evil have been defeated. It is time for us to look past the petty squables of nations to work for the betterment of mankind. An era of peace is upon us, one that shall last as long as the human spirit wills it so. Never before or, I hope, after shall there ever be a conflict in which our very existence is in jepordy. We cannot and will not let that come to pass."
-President Truman, December 7th, 1950.
On December 7th 1950, the United Nations was formed. Roosevelt's dream of a peaceful coalition of nations had come true. The greatest war in human history, a battle for the survival of democracy, had ended as the war to end all wars.
