There must be a way to program the Italian AI to quit acting so irrationally.
I realize that IRL the Itallians had big ambitions in the Balkans, the Mediteranean, the Middle East, and North Africa, and that they performed rather poorly in their various theaters of operation (not to mention their poor planning). But not once did they declare war without having ANY troops in the general vicinity of the nation upon which they declared war.
I am a little frustrated and a little tired of Italy running off half-cocked in the fall of 1940 and declaring war on Yuoslavia and Greece despite not having a single division in the Albanian provinces, and next to no divisions in the north east of Italy. (The games when they do have 15 to 20 divisions stacked on their border with Yugoslavia, they never do anything until well after I have swept the Yugoslavian coast with the German army).
There must be a way of setting the AI to look at whether or not Italy has any troops that could participate in the openning battles of a campaign before declaring war. If Italy doesn't, then the AI could check every so often after the historical DoW date to see if there are any available forces in the launching areas before triggering the DoW events by Italy. (If nothing else, the AI could be set to divert forces into the needed areas as preparation for these historical events). I know something like this is possible because the AI will look at and assess troop strength in adjacent provinces when deciding where and whether or not to attack.
I'm all for simulating historical events, but at least Mussolini had troops in Albania before he invaded Greece.
Come on Devs/Modders, it can't be that difficult to bestow a modicum of common sense on the Italian AI where declaring war is concerned.
