Interesting choice of nation.
I wonder how many time you'll need to begin the industrialization process.

The Prime Minister has called for a big gathering of the court members. After three hours of waiting our young King has arrived and sat on his throne, followed by the royal guard, the Prime Minister and the treasurer.
The Prime Minister started with a long speech about the need to open ourselves to the westerners in order to avoid the same presumption of our masters and consequently a similar if not worse defeat. Then he publicly announced that the market of the Kingdom will be soon open to world trade. In short we will adopt the so-called freedom of trade, a policy that people like the British already have been following for decades.
I think this is a historic day for our Kingdom.

That's incredible. After just a few weeks later of our opening of trade, the coffers of the Kingdom are full of money. Our treauser is full of joy, he says that he has never seen so much money entering in our country. For now the Prime Minister's decision has proved to be really wise.
Let us hope that this unbelievable wealth will last for long.

An extraordinary income for our country so far.

However this new course has some consequence. The behaviour of many foreign merchants can be really embarrassing or offensive, and during the last month only the court has received hundreds of complaints about episodes of misunderstanding or rudeness

It seems that trade has become a major cause of war in our times. After the Opium War, now it's the turn of Siam to be attacked because the British had some problems with them concerning the trade routes. Ironically the Johore Sultanate, now an ally of an anti-British country, escaped conflict again by dishonouring its alliance.
Their cowardice astonishes me...

In the last years the westerners have started to spread strange ideas to our people. One day for example some radical court members discussed about the press issue and they asked to remove the harsh censorship that is in force in our Kingdom.
I don't understand such issues, however it seems that the movement gained some support inside the government and today it has been passed a motion giving more freedom to the press.

Two weeks ago we received one Japanese emissary that wanted to pay homage to our King and to discuss with our Foreign Minister. During the official meeting the Japanese delegation saluted our country and announced that the Emperor of Japan intends to end our long rivalry. After Qing's defeat to the British, Japan has realized that our ancient Kingdoms cannot be divided while the western powers are threatening us and we have to unite our forces.
Today I've heard that the Korean Kingdom and the Empire of Japan have signed an alliance. Many of us are still mistrusting our old enemies and I too don't know if this alliance has any good to us. One officer at the Foreign Office told me that Japan also plans an alliance with China, so their willingness of a mutual defence may be true. I don't know...

To prove their friendship the Empire of Japan informed us about the Sultanate of Johore's double dealing. After Brunei's fall, Johore took the place of Brunei's as British secret ally. They not only have allied with Siam to give important information to the British in exchange of money, but they are also involved with some pirate attacks that our merchant ships have recently suffered. The Johore's pirates usually divide the loot with British merchants and the Sultane himself gets a 'special tax' on this trick.
Then one day some ships of our navy have followed in secret a captured merchant ship of ours, and discovered that the pirates even moor at Johore's ports! A delegation that was on one of our ships immediately landed on the port and asked for the local offical demanding official excuses and also some kind of reparations. The locals instead of apologize attacked us with the pirate's help, but we managed to counter them and to escape.
The King listened to our emissary in silence, then he called his ministers and decided that the Kingdom had to teach some lesson to the shameless Sultan.

After two months of preparations then we started the invasion of the Sultanate. Since the British were already involded in a war against France, they didn't intervene at all.
This time my younger brother too has joined the war. I hope that he'll be fine.

After the occupation of the Kuantan fort our King's army marched directly to the Capital where the Sultan's army faced ours. Today I've received a letter from my brother telling me about the battle of Johor Bahru. He said that the Sultan had first ordered a cavalry charge like he wanted us to behold his power, but then our infantry adopted the square formation and slaughtered them. Then our armies slowly surrounded their surviving infantry and defeated it after three hours of fighting. He ended the letter saying that the Sultan is by now done for.

Bee-lining for the gold provinces I see. ;)

Our relations with the westerners (especially with Russia) are so good that our King signed a Foreign Minister's decree that allows to establish permanent foreign embassies in our capital. This will surely improve our contacts with the other countries.

After a few more months of fighting the Johore Sultan decided to give up and accepted to make a public apologize to our King, with also the promise to provide us some reparation for the trade losses caused by the pirates. Finally the local guards delivered to our troops hundreds of pirates who have been executed before the Royal Army left Johore's ports.

During the last year the agreements and the meetings between our Kingdom and the westerners have increased dramatically. Apparently some of the foreign people that arrived in our lands have become friends with the locals and some of them even acted like a guru with talking of a renewal or a so-called 'revolution', something that aims to overthrow the King to establish a people's government.
We came to know this because this winter it has appeared a movement called 'anarchist' that launched an attack to our officials and the Royal guards in several regions of the Kingdom. What has surprised our ministers is the high level of organization of this movement. Our King himself wanted to prepare and direct the counteroffensive and after an intense fighting we managed to defeat this scum.

This afternoon I've met some officiers that told me about a curious episode involving westerners. Last week our Foreign Minister has received a visit by a British emissary. It seems that he wanted to discuss of a mutual support between our Kingdom and the British against our master, not an official alliance but just a coordinated attack. In exchange of our help the United Kingdom wouldn't oppose us the right to control some forts in Manchuria.
Before to go any further, the Foreign Minister wanted to inform the Prime Minister and the King himself. The Prime Minister was quite sceptical, but he prefered to wait the King's response. After the campaign against the 'Anarchist' movement the King was really exhausted and needed a long time of rest, so that his answer came only yesterday. He refused any idea of attacking our masters and said that he is very offended that the British could think he could hit the Qing on the back.
A few days after this episode the Qing Emperor was again in war.

This time the Japanese too decided to intervene and so it came the question if we too had to side with our Masters. While the Foreign Minister thought it would be a bad idea to attack the British because of our trade routes, the Prime Minister was eager to respect our ancient duty to help our Masters.
However a sudden bad event has freezed any discussion of the issue.

King Heonjong's funeral procession

The Prime Minister announced, through tears, that our beloved King Heonjong has passed away. Then our Kingdom had to follow a period of mourning and couldn't intervene in any action abroad. The Royal Gardens kept closed for a week and I met many on the streets walking and sobbing at the same time.
We had also to think of the succession. In fact, during the past years among the Hermits there were many members of the Andong Kim clan, which had provided many queens to our Kingdom but had also gained a predominant influence on the Royal Family. In order to maintain this situation they often put pressure on any valid Royal candidate for the succession and forced them to exile.
Thanks to our rebellion some years ago the Andon Kim clan lost his influence as well and we could prepare a better future King. The new chosen King was a young Joseon man who during his childhood was exiled to Ganghwa Island. At the time our officers took him back to the Royal Palace, he was both illiterate and awkward, but thanks to the effort of our teachers he learned how to behave and became a very good nobleman. Two months after King Heonjong's funeral we assisted to the coronation of King Cheoljong.

Long live to King Cheoljong!

One of the very first measures of our new King involved an issue that the government has been discussing for months.
Since our opening to the World market our merchants continuously pressed our officers to create a way to have money in order to expand their trade activities. Our Treasurer asked some advice to the westerners and then came the idea to establish in our Kingdom some Private banks. After some months of discussions our King approved the idea and at the beginning of the Spring the first three private banks have opened in our Kingdom.

In the meanwhile our masters were again losing their war against the British, after being abandoned by the Empire of Japan that had to pay some reparation. The Qing Emperor was so devastated by the loss that he died of pain, but someone at the court insinuates that he instead commited suicide.

Recently we faced some important public protests against the foreigners. Many of them accuse the government to have abandoned the Qing and to slowly make our Kingdom a colony of the westerners. The guards arrested hundreds of protesters but it seems that the hostility still remains.

Interesting turn of affairs. What is the British demand against China?

Also is the royal succession historical, or did you make it up?

About the royal succession is it in part historical. The only difference is that the historical King Cheoljong returned home only at the coronation time, so that he remained very ignorant and consequently vulnerable to the Andong Kim's clan who maybe even killed him.

Because of Qing's second defeat the Empire of Japan decided to look elsewhere for friends and improved their relations with the United States of America. After a Civil War that was about to destroy their Republic, the Americans turned their back from the Atlantic, where the Europeans secretly supported the secessionists and started to expand their influence on the Pacific.
Perhaps the Japanese people want to emulate our efforts of modernization by contacting other westerners.

It seems that our Masters too are more and more influenced by their powerful neighbours, especially by the British and by our Russian friends. I think that the Qing court surely feel this evolution as a great shame.

The loss of reputation of the Qing Empire was even more clear when we received a visit by a Cambodian emissary. He told us that their King is hostage of a philo-Dai Nam faction and that he asks for our help to liberate the Royal Family.
Our ministers and our King were shocked at this request because what in the past would have been a task given to the Qing now has come directly to us. It looks like we are considered the most reliable country in the area.
Our ministers first wanted to examine the present situation because the Dai Nam Kingdom was under the influence of the Qing Empire. Finally they concluded that the Qing would not intervene because they were still recovering, so the King accept the request and we sent a warning to the Dai Nam Kingdom. This time we were not attacked but the King refused to free the Cambodian King because he accused him to plot against Dai Nam's Royal Family himself.
Then the Cambodian emissary promised us a very good trade concession in exchange of our help and the King decided to declare war.

Korea is clearly becoming the main Asian power (if you except the British of course :D). The Qing have failed in their role of regional overlords !

This evening while having a dinner togheter with some friends of mine I've asked them about their opinion about this war. One of them said that during the last decades the Siamese and the Vietnamese Kings have struggled to control the Cambodian lands. After Siam's defeat against the British, Dai Nam seized the opportunity to increase its presence in Cambodia and got some supporters at the Cambodian court. The Cambodian King tried to protest but he was captured and confinated outside the capital, while the philo-vietnamese clique ruled the land as a Vietnamese's puppet. Apparently there still was a great number of the King's supporters if they managed to send a mission to us.
My younger brother joined this was as well, this time as a general. As we and the Cambodian emissary expected the philo-Vietnamese clique intervened in the war.

After a few weeks of preparations our troops had finally disembarked on Vietnamese coasts. My brother told me in a letter that they haven't found any resistance during their arrival.

I came to know that before our intervention the Siamese King had won a war against Dai Nam and occupied the central provinces, including the city of Hue. Because of that the most part of the Vietnamese army was guarding the northern provinces in order to block any further invasion from Siam. They tried to send some battalion by sea but our navy dissuaded them and they couldn't defend their southern lands. Then our armies could easily march to Saigon, the richest city in that part of the Kingdom.

I've received another letter from my brother. He says that during an expedition into Cambodian lands his army has been attacked by a local force. It followed a fierce battle where he was wounded and was forced to retire.
Then our army reorganized and forced the Vietno-Cambodian forces to retire to the capital where we fought the decisive battle.

After our victory we surrounded the Cambodian Royal Palace until the Philo-Vietnamese clique surrendered. The King then returned in his rightful residence and ordered to execute the traitors. In another letter my brother told me that they had a great feast and every Korean soldier was treated like a noble. However we still had to convince the Vietnamese King to renounce to any further claim on Cambodia.

After several months of occupation of both Cambodia and the southern part of Dai Nam Kingdom and facing the threat of our arrival on the northern region, the Vietnamese Kingdom accepted to meet our ambassadors. The peace treaty was quickly signed. In the treaty the Kingdom of Dai Nam promises to give full sovereignty to Cambodia and also publicly excuses to have refused our wiseful warnings about not meddling with Cambodian's royal family.
This is a great victory for our Kingdom and also for our reputation in the region.

The terms of our peace treaty with Dai Nam.

Another step towards modernization is done. Today we received from the United Kingdom some projects and texts about factories, something that can help a lot our future trade. Our officers have created a special commission to study this kind of technology. We hope to can build our first factory as soon as it is possible.
Our Kingdom could be the first one to have one factory in the region and this would be a great advantage as well.

Another bad news about the foreigners. Three weeks ago a Russian ambassador has been found dead in our capital. It followed a serious protest from Tsar himself and we had to apologize publicly for the incident. Some officers from the Foreign Office even suggested to build a monument for the diplomat, but the Prime Minister dismissed the proposal as idiocy.

Other troubles came from our possesion in Brunei. The local people are complaining that we discriminate their goods by preferring Korean ones. The Prime Minister asked to the Treasurer his opinion, and the latter said that it would be a good idea to rescind part of our present policy.
