Prologue

Westeros is a shattered ruin. The notional overlord of the seven kingdoms, Tommen Baratheon, is a mere child. While he retains the support of Casterly Rock and the Tyrells of Highgarden, only a handful of lords remain vassals of the iron throne. The ironborn retain their grip on several fastnesses along the salt shore, and have lost none of their strength. In the north, Roose Bolton has finished the work started by the Freys and Lannisters and now seeks to rule in his own right. The greater part of the realm is a fractured mess of independent seats and lordships...

Lord Davos Seaworth of Rainwood, Admiral of the Narrow Sea returns to the port of White Harbor only to hear the grievous news that his liege Stannis Baratheon, brother of Robert and the rightful lord of the seven kingdoms, has been slain in battle. With Stannis lacking a male heir, further strife and infighting among his bannermen is sure to follow. His clandestine mission, undertaken at the behest of Wyman Manderly, would seem now to have little bearing on the future. He delivers his charge as promised and heads north.

Despite all of the devastation, ill-fortune, deceit and treachery wrought during the War of the Five Kings...by some strange twist of fate, hope has returned.

Chapter I

During the remainder of their lord's minority, Wyman Manderly would continue to rule in White Harbor. It was decided that efforts would be undertaken to see what alliances and support could be secured discreetly, attempting to forestall the spread of news that an heir of Eddard and Robb Stark lived for as long as possible. Wyman's sole surviving son Wylis was tasked with the completion of the young Stark's education.

The most immediate concern was to build up enough support, whether by alliances or bringing former vassals back to the fold, to be able to eventually move openly against Roose Bolton, the Lord of the Dreadfort, who held sway over a large swath of the north including the castle of Winterfell, the ancestral seat of House Stark. Putting a Stark back in Winterfell would right more than a few wrongs.

Many of the traditional bannermen of the great house had betrayed and deserted their King, Robb "The Young Wolf" Stark. The potential loyalty of former allies like the Karstarks and Umbers was extremely suspect. After much consideration, their first envoy was dispatched to an unwaveringly loyal supporter of Eddard Stark, Rickon's late father. While this move might not have provided a wealth of men or material to the cause, the location of their ally's holdings alone would prove to be of great strategic value before the end.

Manderly grants Robett Glover the seat of Oldcastle, at least until such time as Deepwood Motte can be restored to House Glover. The plan to secure the north against invasion or reinforcement from the south is completed when Glavias Marsh, ruler of the restored fortress at Moat Cailin bends the knee.
