Did you relinquish control after the Norwegian campaign?

Also, those Norwegian ICs might have opened up a new tech slot. Has it?

I will relinquish control soon. The problem with Germany was that all her transport ships were at Bordeaux and Brest. They didn't even bother to invade Norway. Now when most of the Norway's armies are destroyed I will release control. Historically Germany send 6 divisions to take Norway, so I don't think it's that much unhistorical when I moved six divisions to Finland. It's AI problem that it is not invading Norway. After Norway I don't have any interest to keep military control over Germany. Also I didn't move any other Germany forces. I just helped Germany a bit to conquer Norway for Axis, they should have invaded it earlier anyway.

I have 16 ICs now and probably after Norway's IC I will have over 20. Finally I get second tech slot. Next time I can move my sliders will be August 1943 and I probably move Central Planning to get even more ICs (+5%). By the way. After I joined Axis I get 5% dissent hit. About 2 IC is used to lower dissent back to zero. Now its still around 2%.

Chapter 16

Happy times

Mo i Rana was secured March 23 by German 6. Division and supplies started to flow to Trondheim. Norway was still fighting hard and they counter-attacked Trondheim two times. Second attack was made by the mechanized division. Countering modern mechanized infantry division was a shock for Finnish-German troops, but they managed to stop the attack. Battles in Norway speed up when intelligence informed that one US army corps had landed in Ålesund. Mechanized and motorizied infantry divisions were in fact US Army units.

us_in_norway.jpg

Norwegian and US forces in Ålesund. April 1 1943.

Early April US landed another army corps to Norway. Finghting for Röros province was hard and Norway and her allies seemed to have infinite number of reserves. New divisions appeared from nowhere and at least three Mechanized Infantry '43 divisions was counted. Finnish supply lines were streched, soldiers were tired, there wasn't enough supplies and refitting divisions was slow. Only because Finland had few German divisions helping them, they managed to won few battles and try to take Röros back from Norwegian troops. Enemy's fast and mobile divisions could move almost twice as fast as Finnish infantry. Mannerheim made several attempt to recapture Röros, but after enemy moved more and more reinforcements Finnish-German forces had to rest and concentrate to defend Trondheim instead of attacking. After Finnish divisions were rested, Mannherheim pushed enemy into retreat in Röros.

german_techs.jpg

Finally some useful techs! Enemy retreat from Röros. April 20.

On May heavy fighting in Norway continued, but slowly Norwegians and US troops were pushed more South. Ålesund and Röros was captured by the Finnish-German troops. A week later Finnish attacked Hamar succesfully. Lack of oil slowed Mannherheim's Päämaja's movement, which was still in Trondheim. Finland didn't have any resources for trade and her allies didn't even want to trade oil. Finland didn't have enough coal (energy) to convert to synthetic oil.

May 26 Finnish I, IV Armeijakunta, 17. Divisioona and German 6. Infantry division attacked to Oslo. Two US mechanized divisions and two Norwegian infantry divisions were forced to withdraw. Road to Oslo, capital of Norway, was open. Oslo was captured by the Mj. General Pajari's 17. Divisioona two days later. After Oslo fall, Finland Foreing Minister Tanner invited Norway's goverment to discuss about peace. After a day Norway surrendered and remaining, maybe 20 allied divisions, were forced to surrender. Finland annexed Norway and started to move her divisions back to Finland.

Norway campaign was long and much more harder than Mannerheim or any other Finnish Generals had expected. All Finnish divisions were about 80% strenght, disorganized and tired after months of long marches and continuation fighting. Note: Military control over Germany was released May 28 1943.

norway.jpg

Norway was annexed by Finland May 28, 1943.

Mj. General Pajari's 17. Divisioona was left to defend Oslo and to suppress partisan acticy. Lt. General Laatikainen's I Armeijakunta was moved to Trondheim and was given same mission. All other divisions were ordered to move to Finland-Russian border by rail. This strategical redeployment would took whole month and divisions were ready on early July.

July 9 new Minister of Security was appointed. Yrjö Puhakka was replaced by Jouko Itälä. Minister Itälä was a known fascist and he was known to use extreme violent to get his goal. This Prince of Terror boosted IC use in annexed Norway by 15%, but Finnish people needed more consumer goods to keep them happy. Thanks to Minister extreme means, Finland boosted its industrial capacity to 21. Note: There is still ONE research slot. It seems I need 20 base IC to have another slot. I have only 16 base IC.

Morning July 29 1943 Prime Minister Toivo Kivimäki gathered goverment and cabinet members for the meeting. Much have happened during the last year and there was many things to talk about. Meeting was held in Helsinki at Prime Minister's office.

goverment.jpg

Goverment of Finland and cabinet members July 1943.

Prime Minister Kivimäki's office was small and modestly decorated. Piles of papers and books were everywhere and it looked like he didn't have anykind of order in those. Kivimäki was a extreme busy man and he looked tired. It was a summer thursday and beautiful warm day. Office's windows was ajar, but still it was hot inside the room. Cabinet members sat around a small table, water was the most popular drink in the group.

Kivimäki: Good morning everyone. It's been a while when we have hold this level meeting and we have much to discuss. Our reputation as a neutral nation is now history and our people are not happy about our foreign policy. I now that most of here supported the idea of joining the Axis and I was'n part of that group. But my arms were tied, because it was our parliament, who accepted the decision. Thereby also Finnish people supported our actions. I don't want to anymore justify my acts as a Prime Minister more than that, you should all know how I think about our situation. The reason why we are here is that I need to know our nation's current status. Hitler have asked many times how prepared we are in the event of war against Soviet Union. Let's start with our foreign relations. Foreign Minister, give us a overview about our relations with the other world and what they think about us.

Tanner: Mr. Prime Minister, we have been isolated after the Winter War. Only real friend we had, and still have, is Sweden. They are maybe the only nation who understanded how desperate our situation was after the Winter War. We didn't plan to attack to Norway. We were forced to ally with Germany in order to save our nation. We could not survive another war against Soviet Union alone. We are now part of the Axis Alliance with Germany, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy, Nationalist Spain and Argentina. Earlier Norway and United Kingdom were close to us, but now we need to consider them our enemies. We are currently at war against United Kingdom, Iraq, France, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Nepal, Bhutan, Yemen, Oman, Belgium, Netherlands, Philippines, Liberia, USA, Columbia, Mexico and Brazil.

europe.jpg

Finland was geographically isolated in Europe.

Tanner: We are geographically isolated and our only trade partner is Sweden. We have made trade deals with other Axis powers, but these deals are only short termed. Because we lack ground connection, we have to rely on merchant ships and Germany is reluctant to send her convoys here. Because Allied nations have sea supremacy, we can't really make any efficient deals with other nations. We must keep our good relations with neutral Sweden to have resources we need and hope that Axis will be victorious in the future.

Kivimäki: Do you think there is a possibility to make separate peace with the Allies?

Tanner: After what we had done to Norway, I don't think that is possible. Other world think we are Germany's ally and our destiny is the same as Germany will be. Right now I don't see any other possibilities. We could improve our relations with allies, but this would take very long time and cost a lot of money and effort.

Kivimäki: I understand. We can only hope that Germany will be victorious. Armament Minister, what is a status of our industry and research?

industry.jpg
[/I]

Oksala: We have increased our industrial capacity by 50% after the Winter War, but this isn't enough for our needs. We are overproducing Consumer Goods to lower dissent, it will last about 100 days. We need Garrisions for Norway to suppress partisans and also more infantry divisions for the Finnish Army. But we are not able to produce materials needed to form new divisions. All our industrial capacity is needed for producing supplies and reinforcements. After we have refitted all our existing divisision, we have plans to continue production. We captured large amount of resources from Norway and this has saved our industry for many months to come. Only thing we lack is oil. Fortunately we only have one unit that need fuel. Our energy stockpile, I mean coal, is converted to give us more synthetic oil.

techs.jpg

Oksala: Before we captured gold, money and currecies from Norway, we had problems to fund our research projects. Now we don't have that problem anymore. Italy and Germany have shared blueprints, unfortunately most of them are useless, but we have few useful blueprints available too. I recommend focusing our research for Production Planning to increase supplies production efficiency. Also we need new artillery brigades, divisions and doctrines to improve our armed forces. Our military intelligence lack encrypting devices and we are far behind in the area of cryptography. We will get better decrypting devices after few days, but it's not enough. I hope Germany and Italy give us more blueprints in that area. We lack good research teams in that area and it will take over half year to research these without help. Overall, we are technologically behind all of our enemies and allies. This of course isn't a news for any of us.

Kivimäki: Good, thank you. Field Marshal Mannerheim will decied what is best the research plan for our nation. We need to narrow our focus in order to make best use of our limited resources. I'm delighted to hear how good our resource situation is. This is a very good news. Minister of Security, how our internal security is looking?

New minister Jouko Itälä was a military man and dressed in uniform. The Lapua Movement was banned after a failed coup-d'état in 1932. Ironically, the banning was done under the Protection of the Republic Act, which originally was dictated by the Lapua Movement. The activities were then continued in the Patriotic People's Movement (IKL, fin. Isäinmaallinen Kansanliike) 1932. Academic Karelian Society didn't have political influence and was considered more like a student organisation. IKL instead was a real political party and after the Winter War, these extreme right people get even place in the cabinet.

partisans.jpg

Itälä: This map shows partisans activity in red. As we can see Norwegians rebel groups are active in all Noway. Mostly these groups are small and they sabotage rail connections, supply depots or assault our guard posts. We believe they are getting help from Allied nations. I have only 17. Divisoona in anti-partisan duty in Oslo and this isn't enough. Regular soldiers are poor soldiers and I need Garrisons and military police units to keep occupied territory in order. We have established labor forces in Norway to work for us in their factories. Also we have arrested communist party members and other unwanted persons in Norway...

Kivimäki: Release them!

Minister Itälä face was twisted. He actually looked surprised, because he have believed he could do everything what he wanted in Norway.

Itälä: But... But... These scums are COMMUNIST!

Kivimäki: I don't want to see any acts looking like Lapua Movement in Norway or in Finland. You have right to arrest people ONLY if you have proofs against them. Finland is not Germany and I do not allow these acts when I am the Prime Minister. The President and parliament is behind me in this decision. If IKL think you can do anyhing like this, I will promise you that your position will be filled by someone else. Did I make myself clear enough?!?

Minister of Security nodded. Although Finland was more fascist than previously, it still have strong social democratic party and Prime Minister was member of that party. Kivimäki was forced to select IKL to goverment, but he have to keep them in leash to avoid any too radical acts. Lapua Movement was still banned and Finnish goverment didn't want IKL to do anything like Lapua Movement had done in early the 30's. Finnish people were civilizied and ethnic cleaning was not part of their national policy. Minister of Security was allowed only arrest people, who directly acted against Finnish or who helped the rebels.

Kivimäki: I will also send my representative to Norway to check living and working conditions of Norwegians. I want that these people will be treated well and they will have pay what they do for us. We are not animals, mr. Itälä. Norwegians people deserve better treatment. They are not our enemies now after we have conquered their nation. If we treat them well, they will trust us. This annexing is only temporary act of war and when this war is over, they will have their independence back. Don't you try to blacken Finnish reputation as democratic nation. These acts will be remember after the war. If any Finnish soldier use violent against Norwegians civilians, punishment for such acts should be severe, do you understand?

Itälä: As you wish...

Disgust against IKL and fascists was clearly seen in the Prime Minister's face. As long as social democratics were in charge, these illegal acts were never allowed in Finland. Kivimäki mean what he have said and he closely watched every decision Itälä made.

Kivimäki: Good. I will expect reports to my desk on weekly basis. Minister of Intelligence, how much information we have about the Soviet Union and Allies forces?

intelligence.jpg

Riekki: Soviet Union and Allies are using advanced radio codes and we are unable to decode them. We only rely on recon planes, squads and other more conventional means. We know the Russians have several divisions deployed on or border, but how many, we have no idea. After our military intelligence have new decoding machines, we can break few of their codes. We don't have encoding machines either and enemy is able to read our messages easily. We rely more on fixed phone lines and courieers to avoid enemy capturing our orders. Germany intelligence have informed us that Soviet Union have about 270 divisions, where 45 is armored and 30 motorizied divisions. Also they have 4,300 aircrafts on hand plus two dozen old navy ships. Their Armed Forces are about the twice the size Germany have, but their quality should be lower. I will have new report after a week, when we have our new decoding machines.

Kivimäki: Good lord... I hope these figures are wrong. Field Marshal Mannerheim, how strong our defence force is? Do you think we have a change against the Russians if war start?

armies.jpg

Mannerheim: We have 16 Infantry '41 divisions, one Mountain '36 division and one HQ-unit. All but 17. Divisioona, which is deployed at Oslo, are defending our Easter border. I'm rather pessimistic about our ability to defend our country without help from Germany. Norway campaign showed that we do not have resources for offensive war. But our soldiers are veterans and past two campaigns had showed that our leaders are very competent. What Finnish Army needs is better and more equipments. We still have too few anti-tank weapons and it's likely that we will encounter Soviet tank divisions. I'm not talking about light BT-5 and BT-7 tank corps, I'm talking about their new medium T-34 'Sotka' tank tank divisions (Sotka was a Finnish nickname for Soviet T-34 tank). Our intelligence show that they have reorganized their old tank corps to new tank divisions, which look much like German panzer divisions. They are strong and very powerful units. We need to upgrade our divisions to new model and have more anti-armor weapons and better artillery.

inspection.jpg

Field Marshal Mannerheim inspecting the troops during the summer 1943 training.

Mannerheim: Mj. General Pajari's 17. Divisioona in Oslo should be moved to Finland as soon as new Garrisons are ready. It's not regular soldiers job to keep security behind our lines. With only 17 divisions, I don't have any dreams to hold against strong Soviet offensive. German troops, who take part of Norway campaign, are still in Norway in garrison duty. I hope that few of them could be deployed to Finland to help our forces. Mr. Tanner, I hope you can talk with the Foreing Minister Ribbentrop and make official request for Germany high command. Soviet invasion is likely to happen any day now or it could be that Germany is starting new front. I'm actually amazed there is still peace between the Soviet Union and Germany. If we have enough time, we could upgrade and build more divisions during 43-44 winter. It's much easier to defend during the winter, as we have experiecend earlier in two campaigns. We must be ready at the latest 1944 spring. Without good intelligence, I can only guess what is our change in event of war against the Russians. I will give better report after we have those decoding machines active.

Kivimäki: Very good. Mannerheim, it's your job to make report for the Germany about our readiness. Foreign Minister Tanner, please contact von Ribbentrop and ask Germans to send few divisions for our help. I know you gentlemen are not very religious people, but we can pray that God's is on our side.

Meeting lasted two days and many other things were talked through. Finland was blind at the moment, without good intelligence about enemy forces. But Mannerheim would finish research of decoding machines very soon. Finland was stronger than ever, but it wasn't enough against Soviet Union. Decoding machines were ready 3 August and new Production Planning research project was started same day.

It must be great being part of a Great Alliance!

Chapter 17

The Clash of Titans

The Finnish Army intelligence units have been listening Soviet radio transmissions and thanks to new decoding machines, they could make better estimates about the size of the enemy forces. It looked that the Russians had deployed at least three divisions to each border provinces. Real figure was between 3 and 12 divisions. Intelligence made rough estimate and told that 20-30 divisions was near borders. Mannerheim finished readiness report for Germany and it was send to Hitler on August 7. Finland didn't get any reply from Germany for days. Foreign Minister Tanner was planning his trip to Berlin, when Germany ambassador informed minister that he should wait few days. On August 10 German ambassador informed, that Hitler himself would come to visit Finland next day. All preparations were made in great secrecy and Hitler's visit was unofficial.

On August 11 it was a cloudy day in Helsinki. Visibility was only few hundred meters and clouds were low. Field Marshal Mannerheim have ordered all Anti-Air batteriers in Southern Finland not to open fire on any planes during that day. Focke Wulf FW 200 Condor was a long-range naval bomber originally. Strange looking four engine plane appeared to sky and Finnish anti-air battery soldiers looked it, while it was flying very low. Hitler's personal pilot SS-Oberführer Hans Baur made one circle over the Malmi airfield and landed. Before Hitler's plane several Junkers Ju 52/3m planes have landed on same airfield with the German high military staff along with Wehrmacht Chief of Staff Field Marshal Alfred Jodl.

hitler_landed.jpg

Hitler arrived Finland August 11 1943.

Because Hitler's visit to Finland was secret and unofficial, he didn't visit Helsinki. Finnish officials had no idea why Hitler have arrived. After official greetings at the airport, car column took officials to rail side track where special wagon was waiting for them. After the toast (Hitler didn't drink alcohol) meeting took place.

kallio.jpg
mannerheim.jpg

Hitler, Field Marshal Jodl, President Kallio and Field Marshal Mannerheim .

Hitler: First I would like to gongratulate Finland about succesful Norway campaign. Very few have believed so small country is able to do such thing. I'm very pleased. It's an honour for Germany to fight side-by-side with the Finns. I have read Field Marshal Mannerheim's readiness report. Your army is small, but I believe you can fight with such courage that the enemy have to be ten times bigger to defeat you. I have full faith in your army and Germany will not forget her allies. While we speak here, 168. Infantiere-Division in Oslo is already loading to transport ships and soon it is on way to Finland. It will be the first division and more will come later. Currently we will need to defend Norway too and German divisions there are needed to counter any invasion attempts. I have many times asked what is your readiness in the event of war against Soviet Union. You may also wonder why I have come here with great secrecy. Gentlemen! Time has come! I will launch great operation in the East, it will be called Operation Barbarossa. Invasion of Soviet Union will start August 20, we have nine days until the start.

Finnish Generals believed that operation would not be started until spring and now Hitler have said greatest military operation of history will start in autumn. Mannerheim couldn't wonder the reasons behind this decision. Maybe Soviet Union was planning to attack and German intelligence had notest their preparations. Pre-emptive attack was many times the best defence against such event. Hitler's voice was soft and slow, totally different tone that his public speeches. Some words he only whispered and it looked like he was more like talking with himself rather than for the people in the room.

Hitler: Germany have 100 divisions ready in Eastern border. 14 panzer division will be the spearhead of the attack. We will strike the Russians with such strong force that they will not have a change. Germany will capture Moscow by the end of this year. Leningrad is one of main objective for Army Group North. Your border is close to that city and I hope that Finland could launch offensive and try to take that city. In the North is Murmansk port. Allies are using this port to send supplies and war material to help the Russians. Our navy is occupied in the Atlantic and Finland could try to reach Murmansk and stop their convoys by capturing Soviet port. What are your plans for the war against Soviet Union?

Hitler was looking excited about his Operation Barbarossa. Finland wasn't that eager to fight another campaign. Not even now after almost all divisions have been refitted and ready for it. Mannerheim was silent, so President Kallio answered Hitler.

Kallio: We have made only plans to defend our country. Although we are very pleased that Germany have gave us military aid, we will not launch any offensive if our country is not attacked by the Russians. Finland will fight own separete war in the North to keep our independence. If we have an opportunity, we would launch offensive to capture Karelian Isthmus back, what we have lost in Winter War. What comes to capturing Leningrad or Murmansk, I don't believe we have enough troops to try that. Our nation have only 3,5 million people and capturing city with almost same size seems impossible task.

It was clear that Hitler didn't like what he have heard. He walked back and forth nervously when Kallio talked to him. President Kallio looked Mannerheim to back up his words.

Mannerheim: Our army is not cabable of large scale offensive. Our intelligence is too poor, we lack logistical capacity and our army march on foot only. We don't have navy and our airforce have only two dozen modern airplanes. Our only hope to win against tanks is to drive them to prepared defensive postions and ambush them. Right now Finland cannot make any offensives, the Russians have too many divisions guarding our border. But I'm a soldier and I will do what my goverment will told me to do.

Hitler: If that is the case, you don't mind if Germany will use your country soil for a attack against Soviet Union? If you Finnish Army is backed up with the Wehrmacht, do you join our attack?

It was irony that Soviet Union have feared just that when they started the Winter War. Without Winter War Finland would have not made alliance with Germany. Soviet Union have drove Finland to corner and now they faced possible attack from the Finland by the Germans troops.

Kallio: I cannot promise we attack before our nation is attacked. But if that happen, I believe we we will support Germany attack.

It was enough for the Hitler and he changed subject. He have hoped that Finland was more eager to attack against Soviet Union. He couldn't understand the Finns. After what the Russians have done to them, they were still passive and cautious about it.

Hitler: Very well. 168. Infantiere-Division will be deployed in Helsinki area and probably we will move more troops later. I hope that you consider my propose carefully. Now let's talk about something else. I'm interested about your internal politics. What have you done to your Jewish problem?

Field Marshal Mannerheim didn't like the Germans or fascists. Now when he heared Hitler's question, his skin creeped.

Mannerheim: We DO NOT have a Jewish problem.

Mannerheim said that in such cold tone in his voice, that Hitler understanded to drop the subject even before it was started. It was a first and last time Germany had tried to influence Finland's internal politics.

Kallio: I believe we could eat lunch and discuss more during it. I'm sure Mannerheim want to know few details about your plan and status of Soviet army. I on the otherhand want to hear more about possible research help for Finland and also trade deals.

President Kallio quickly changed subject and understanded that little break did good for Mannerheim. Hitler, Jodl, Mannerheim and Kallio talked more about the relations between Germany and Finland during the lunch. Hitler stay in Finland only six hours, before he flew back to Germany. Later Hitler told his adjuntant that especially Mannerheim have made good impression on him and that Mannerheim believed the same about him. He was so wrong about Mannerheim. 76-years old Field Marshal was relieved, when Hitler's plane took off and he hoped never to meet Hitler or any Germans in his life.

mannerheim_and_hitler.jpg

Mannerheim and Hitler.

18 August German 186. Infantriere-Division arrived in Helsinki. Two days later Germany declared war against Soviet Union was Finland was again forced to consider Soviet Union as their enemy. Germany had 180 divisions, where only 16 were panzer divisions. (Note: Actually in game Soviet Union DOW on Germany, but I changed it in this AAR to have Hitler's visit.)

Finnish-Russian border looked peaceful, but Germany-Russian border was full of activity. Soviet Union have more divisions than Germany had. Finland could not do nothing more but wait and see how operation was going on. 17. Divisioona located in Oslo was ordered to Rovaniemi, Finland needed every unit to defend motherland.

barbarossa.jpg

Operation Barbarossa. Note how few divisions Germany have in border!

Early September German divisions have made breakthrough and advanced toward East. Nothern Army Group was making best progress, while Army Group Center had problems. Terrain in center was marshy and Germans divisions avoided that bad terrain. Finnish intelligence reported division movement in Eastern border. It was still uncertain where these divisions where moving, but it seems that Soviet Union was pulling divisions more South from Kola Peninsula. Finland's full strenght reserve divisions were deployed in border and they waited.

5 September soviet bombers bombed Jyväskylä and Kajaani and Finland officially admitted that they were in war against Soviet Union. VI Armeijakunta in Jyväskylä was lightly damaged in these bombings. Dissent had reached zero and production was started. Two Garrision division was cancelled and Finland builded single garrision and three Infantry divisions same time. Progress was 100% for both project.

By 9 September rains changed terrain in West Russia to mud. Army Group North's advance was severe slowed by bad conditions. September 17 Soviet attacked Joensuu and Lt. General Österman's III Armeijakunta was forced to retreat to Jyväskylä. Field Marshal Mannerheim's VI Armeijakunta located in Jyväskylä was bombed constantly and it was took more damage. Situation was looking bad early in the war. Two Armeijakunta was too disorganized to fight and more supplies and reinforcements was needed.

september24jpg.jpg

Soviet advancing to Joensuu. Mexico invaded Oslo!

September 24 Mexico landed on Oslo and captured undefended city. The city was a large industrial center and loss of it was a big strike for Finland's industry. Mj. General Pajari's 17. Divisioona was ordered to turn back and march to South. October 7 Soviet capture Joensuu and launched new attack. Field Marshal Timoshenko's armies with 29 divisions, where 7 was tank divisions attacked toward Kajaani. III Armeijakunta had no alternatives than retreat to Kuopio.

October 15 II Armeijakunta in Mikkeli was attacked by 15 Soviet divisision under General Petrov. General Petrov had five tank divisions, one mechanized and nine infantry divisions. Finnish troops were soon in retreat. The Russians attacked with such force that Finnish had no possibilities to hold against them. Oslo was capture back by the German forces, but same time Soviet tanks captured Mikkeli. Finnish had already lost three provinces in about a week. Helsinki was attacked by 10 divisions and Finnish had to retreat from their capital.

Few days later Soviets attacked Tampere with 10 divisions. Foreign Minister Tanner asked Military Access through Sweden, but they declined Finland's request. To avoid encirclement and destruction of Finnish Armies, Mannerheim ordered General Retreat to Northern part of the Finland. Already Soviet Union hava captured most strategical important provinces in Finland and Mannerheim plan was to withdraw to Norway. Terrain in Norway suited well for defence and it was his plan to continue battle there, even after whole Finland was occupied. Research for Production Planning was finished October 23 and Production Control was started. Italy have gaved blueprints also for this project and research progressed fast.

general_retreat.jpg

Too many Ruskies. Mannerheim ordered General Retreat toward North.

Many of vitally important industries had already fallen to to Russians. Finland barely had enough supplies, but situation was improved little after new Garrision division was ready and deployed to Oslo 25 October. Germany offensive was also stopped after Soviet Union started large counter-attack. Germany was barely able to stop this attack. The Russians had unlimited number of reserves and dozens of armies, thousands of tanks and artillery. All their attacks were supported by hundreds of tactical bokmbers and fighters. Hitler's Operation Barbarossa was looking more like a survival battle than a great offensive.

Late October Finnish intelligence reports showed that Soviet offensive was showing marks of slowing down. For some reason Soviet didn't advance. Mannerhem cancelled his General Retreat order and ordered divisions to stand fast. Lt General Siilasvuo's IV Armeijakunta attacked Kajaani and was able to defeat single Soviet division advanding there. It was the only victory so far. Lt. General Heinrich's II Armeijakunta counter-attacked Tampere to stop Soviet advance, but Field Marshal Timoshenko's 10 divisions quickly stopped Finnish attack. Mannerheim ordered new defence line to center Finland. South was already lost and divisision in Turku were in danger of encirclement, when Soviet advanced to Tampere.

Soviet tank divisions advanced too fast on open terrain in Southern Finland. I Armeijakunta and German 168. Infantier-Division was surrounded and compelete destroyed by the Russians. Three divisions was lost. The Russians had captured Turku and Pori. Mannerheim pulled his forces to defend Oulu and Kajaani. Winter was coming and Northern part of Finland was already covered by snow. Mannerheim hope was that snow slowed Soviet attack and maybe Finland could resist longer. Good news was badly needed, but Germany offensive was halted and there was scarse possibility that Germany could come to rescue Finland. The Northern Lion was again alone fighting against the Red Bear.

south_is_lost.jpg

New defence line was established to Oulu-Kajaani-Petsamo. November 4, 1943.

November 12 new defence line was ready. Retreating Finnish Armies were badly hammered by the Sovier bombers. But Soviet offensive was slowing and they gave rest for their troops. It was probably just calm before the storm, but Finnish divisision needed rest even more and it was welcomed relieve for tired Finnish soldiers.

After the lost of Southern part of Finland, industrial capacity was reduced to 6. Soviet advance had been so fast that the Finnish civilian population was unable to escape. Consumer Goods need was also lowered and Finland was still barely able to supply its troops. Production of new divisions needed to be halted to give reinforcements and supplies to existing divisions.

German 3. Infantier and 3. Gebirgs-jäger divisions were moving toward Hammerfest. At least if all Finland territory was lost, Finnish-German divisions would defend Norway to the last breath. Snow covered mountain terrain in Hammefest was the best defensive terrain soldier could get. But Mannerheim didn't want to think wihthdrawing more North. He hoped he could keep his lines in Oulu-Kajaani-Petsamo axis.

On November 17, it was clear that German Operation Barbarossa had failed. Snow stopped German advance and Soviets moved more and more reserves to launch massive attack against Germany held Poland. Finland goverment understanded that they had overestimated Germany's reserves and cababilities. Stalin on the otherhand wasn't eager to fight long attrition war against Finland in Norway. The Russians divisions in Finland was badly needed in Central Europe. Finland was basically defeated by Soviet Union and Stalin made diplomatic proposition for Finland November 17 1943. Finland goverment was invited to Kremlin in Moscow to discuss about this issue. Finnish goverment officials weren't sure what Stalin had in his mind, but they agreed come to Kremlin.

Stalin's Offer

November 19 1943

Finnish delegation arrived to Kremlin midday November 19. Foreing Minister Tanner and Paasiviki were the Finnish officials.

Stalin, Foreing Minister Molotov, Foreing Minister Väinö Tanner and Paasikivi.

Molotov: You have two choices: death or survive. Our armies have already captured half of your nation and Field Marshal Timoshenko is ready to finish his mission and wipe out whole country. We have a generous offer for you. If you break your alliance with Germany and join Soviet Union and Allies, we offer to spare Finland's indepencence. You must declare war upon Germany and drive German troops out from Norway. If you choose not to agree our offer, we will continue our offensive until your divisions are pushed in to the Atlantic Ocean.

Stalin's offer was generous, but Finland had to turn back on Germany. It was a treason, but everybody knew that Germany was losing the war.

Tanner: If we agree your terms, we want to keep our democracy and right to appoint our own goverment members.

Stalin: You will keep your goverment, but we will appoint commission to Helsinki observe your goverment. Also you must leas Porkkala neark Hanko for period of 50 years and grant transit right for our troops. Soviet Union regain 1940 border and also Petsamo province.

Paasikivi: We will have to discuss your offer with our goverment.

Finnish delagetion returned to Finland. A day later Finland goverment accepted Soviet Union terms, but they were able to negotiate province of Petsamo out of the agreement. Finland switched sides and joined the Allies.

Finland understanded that they cannot win against Soviet Union and Allies.

Historical note: Historically this happened when Finland was loosing Continuation War. Finland had to drive out German division in Lapland and after the Continuation War Finnish troops were forced to fight against Germany. This event was known as The Lapland War. Bitter German troops in Lapland mined and sabotaged every thing they could. City of Rovaniemi was in ruins after these actions. The last German troops were expelled in April 1945.

When Finland made armistice with the Russians they notest that Stalin's didn't kept his words. Same day Finland was puppeted by Soviet Union and communist Otto Ville Kuusinen was appointed as Head of State. Finland became a communist nation under the the Soviet Union. Bittered Finns could do nothing for this treason.

Never trust the communist words! Soviet Union puppeted Finland!

World War II continued, but Finland people weren't satified what have happened to their country. They have lost their independence and their fate was only one step better than other Baltic nations fate. Democratic Scandinavia was reduced to single nation: Sweden. Alone Sweden hold her independence in the Scandinavion.

Note: Switching sides event id = 61 in hoi2.txt . It seems there is a small 'bug'. My goverment didn't chance to what pop-up windows told, instead I was magically puppeted. I checked events and find out that event 61 will launch event 64, which is puppet Finland. Also I didn't lost Petsamo, which was historically lost to Soviet after Continuation War. Change for puppet event 64 is 90%. If this is lowered let's say 10-30%, it would make more sense. Historically Finland was able to keep her independence and it was not puppeted by the Russians.

Much have changed after Finland became communist state. Whole goverment was changed, people of Finland had to live under iron rule of Otto Kuusinen. Freedom of Speech was gone abd Stalin wanted Finnish Army to fight against Germany. The world of common soldier has turned upside down. New Finnish goverment planned to hold a meeting, where new plans for the Finland was made.

Ouch!

From winner to puppet within two updates!

1.02 patch is finally out! Great!

I will have a sad news for you guys... I have decided to abandon this AAR. There are three reasons for this:

1) 1.02 radically changes game as Finland. I also want to start new game and check what have changed. Probably starting as Japan... Sorry, no AAR for this... Read more why.

2) I'm moving from Sweden to Dublin, Ireland early May. It will take few weeks before I have internet connection.

3) It isn't fun to play as a puppet of Soviet Union

That's it folks. I don't know when I'm going to start new AAR. It's spring and summer is coming. I'm moving to new city and country and probably have much other things to do than playing. But maybe I will start new AAR later this year. I will unplug my computer next saturday and start my short vacation before my work start on early may.

You won't have that much to do mate. Dublin is a small city, and weather is still very overcast here. You got one thing right though, it will be weeks before you get you internet connection! :D

Damn! I knew I should have choosed Spain instead of Ireland. :p Well... I'm used to cold weather, I'm a Finn afterall. Well hopefully there will be sun at least few days. I already packed my sunglasses and swin trunks. But I know how notorios Ireland & British weather could be. Maybe you guys will get new AAR during the summer. :)

Muah! This was so funny, from Axis aggressor to Soviet satellite.
IMHO Stalin was too kind after what Finland had done to Norway.

Story was fun to read, well done El Savior. Can't wait your next one.

It was a good read. Great job, El Savior. I'll see ya when I see ya.
