As an historian of classical antiquity, Greece has always had a special place in my heart. Today, I intend to play it with C.O.R.E. mod on a 1.05 patched Heart of Iron with my goals being to re-create a greek eastern mediterranean sea. The countries I intend to fight and ( hopefully ) absorb are Albania, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Irak and Persia. A very ambitious project for a country as small and poor as Greece, probably an unreachable one, but we need dreams to go forward in life !

Since I haven't much documentation about WWII Greece ( and not much time to search for some ) I'll only use the names of the peoples nammed in HoI and give them new personalities and histories. Please excuse me for this.

As I'm not a born english speaker, my langage will look very crude ( not speaking of the spelling... ) in front of what others have written on this forum so I beg your pardon and hope you'll neverthless enjoy it. And now, here we go for the rising of the new Alexander !

The begining of a dream

It all began in '30. 1830, the date of the independance.

A prosperous family of the athenian aristocracy nammed Pamphilos had always wanted to share the power, something wich hadn't been possible with the Ottomans. Now, with an occidental king, lots of things would change...

May 1935. The recent coup d'état had put the king back on his trone, and Athenes was still wearing the stigmatas of the street fightings between defensor of the Republic and members of the royalist forces. Walking in the scared streets without taking notice of the neighborough, Arystos Pamphilos was an happy man. Less than an hour ago he had been sumoned by the the King Georges II who had nammed him lord protector of the kingdom, head of the governement. The plan of Metaxas had worked perfectly, as advertised... Now the fascist were in full control of the land of democracy and occidental philosphy. Well, that was the common impression given by the situation for Arystos was far from fascist. They were only temporary allies for him, one of the many his family has had during the last century in its rise toward power.

His familiy shared a vision of Greece. Not this poor, half savage country. No. But the one of the Acropolis, of Delphes, of Plato and Aristotle, of Pericles and... Alexander the Great. Ah, what a time than the one when two thirds of the known world were greek, unified in a single realm... But soon Greece would retake her place in the world as the brightest star in the sky, a wonderfully powerfull country where all the greatest minds would come to see the most beautifull capital of the world and share the sensation of greatness the ruins and the new buildings would make...

But there was a lot to do before it would happen. It was time to begin working for glory !

Greece is (sadly) one of those overlooked countries in HoI AARs. Maybe you can show the world its real potential. The beginning looks indeed promising! :)

thanks for your support !

To answer 2Coats question, the big time jump from the independance in 1830 ( date of formal recognition by the international community ) to the 1935 king's return is to place Pamphilos ( which will be my main political character ) in the context of his family, giving him a background which will explain some of his decisions and/or acts and words ;)

As for you conquering it latter in your wonderfull AAR, I'll just tell you one thing : do not try the mountains :D

And now, the first "in-game" insight with Greece's situation in '36 and the first decision making !

Interesting, to say the very least. I shall be watching. :)

Arystos was sitting in his office of the royal palace in a very confortable chair, looking alternatively to the Acropolis and to a great mural map showing the world as known by the greeks in the 4th century B.C.

When, a century before, his family had decided to make all things possible to rise to the power, it was with an objective clear and precise : the recreation of an Empire dign of Alexander the Great, the leader who rose to power and quickly conquered every land from Greece to the Indus, from Macedonia to th deserts of Libya.
For the Pamphilos family was profoundly attached to her land and had suffered from the ottomans occupation of the country...

Now, as he contempled the beautiful shape of the Parthenon in the downing sun, he was sure he, Arystos Pamphilos, would realise his family dream.

His aide Nikolaos Aristides came in carrying a thick bundle of paper : the reports from the chief of staff, minister of economy and armament and scientific advisor.

- Yes Nikolaos. Are those the documents I asked for ?
- Yes Sir. They are all there.
- You read them. So please tell me what they say.
- As you wish Sir. I shall begin with economy. The minister wrote it in standart IC mesure. We are curently producing 34 IC divided between 9,5 units for civilians needs, 22 for military supplies and 19 free for unit production or scientific research. We are auto-suffisant in every commodity except for rubber.
- So we'll have to buy some... But let's continue.
- Per your orders. Scientificly, we are nowhere. We research nothing and have basic or WWI technology levels in all important domains.
- It will have to be taken care of... Yet I'm not sure we can do it right now. What a pity, we where the most cultivated people on earth... well go on and don't listen to a fool like me !
- Yes Sir. The next item of interest is our army. We currently have 16 divisions composed as follow : 1 cavalery in Crete, 14 infantery of which two are also in Crete and 1 infantery division with an artillery brigade. The fl...
- That's not enough ! far from it ! order immediately two more infantry division with artillery brigades and a standard division of infantery ! A disband that cavalery unit ! Who use them nowadays ? We're no turks !
- Yes Sir ! As you wish Sir ! Now, for the fleet... We own two dreadnough with 12" guns. Quite impressive by the look of the pics in this file...
- You've never seen a battlecruiser, don't you ? well... continue please !
- Yes Sir. We have a destroyer division and a submarine squadron too, and two small freighters for troops transport.
- Yes. Disband the submarines and put the destroyers in the convoy guard reserve... For now we'll conserve the bigger ships but that will have to be righted...
- Will this be all, Sir ?
- Yes... Well no. Order a full scale industry improvement programm in the whole country since you're at giving orders.
- Yes Sir.

The aide got out of the room and the true leader of Greece went back to his meditation... Alexander the Great... Macedonia... Damn Yougoslavs...

15 augustus 1936, Royal Palace's balcony

The king George II was side by side with the chief of staff Pangalos, the offical chief of the governement and first diplomat of Greece Demertzis and, a bit behind them, Arystos Pamphilos. They were watching an impressive military parade made by 6 infantery divisions, one of them equiped with an attached artillery brigade, a parade organised for the new national day. For Arystos had decided to make the day of the ancient feast of Athena, the Panathenaia, the new national day of the country, a day of rejouissances, sports contests, theater plays, parades, bals, ... A day to make the people love the governement.

Two of the divisions parading before the throng who had come to see them were new, the first concrete proofs of Pamphilos' actions. One more unit was in training, draining 9 units from the budgets.

The king turned to Arystos :

- Mister Pamphilos, I must congratulate you. Between your national rearmament, national industrialisation and national strategic ressource stockpiling plans, you are making our nation a most powerful one, unequaled in the Balkans...
- Thank you majesty. It is a pleasure for me to help my country regaining her place in the world.

Demertzis spoke then :

- Yet I'm worried by the low budget we must work with... We're using so much building new factories all over the country...
- I now mister prime minister. But this has advantages too : we use much less strategical raw materials and they pile faster in ours warehouses...
- Well, time will tell us if it was the right thing to do...
- Yes. Well, since we're all here, I'd like to speak about Albania. She's a small, almost weaponless country filled to the mouth with raw material... I think we should conquer her.
- What ?, said Pangalos, war of agression ?
- Well, no. We'll just take what's ours back...
- They may be a problem. Rome is getting restless since they annexed Ethyopia in april... And they look toward Albania !
- Yes, we are powerfull but not enough to beat the italians...
- General, you're really a defense adept, are'nt you ? Well we'll wait till the italians declare war on the albanians then we will invade the country to "protect" it from il Duce. I don't thing the Italians will come after us then... They may even help us in our conquest with theyre planes !
- And what if they disbark ?
- The province of Vlore is an acceptable limited goal. It will mean that we won't have Tirana's Petrol but we'll have new coal and steel mines, something we always need to feed our economy...

Christmass 1936, Orthodox cathedral of Athens

"... and let us prey for those of our brothers who chose to put theirs lifes in great danger to defend theirs politicals beliefs in Spain. Let's ask God to make no fratricid takes place. And have a prayer for the spanish themselves, the fighters but the simples peoples too..."

After the mass, the king and Arystos Pamphilos took the same car to drive back to the palace.

Once in the car, the king spoke :

- That's terrible this civil war they have in Spain...
- Yes indeed... They're using weapons which are said to be so destructive ! some kind of planes if the reports are corrects... Yet the Republicans seems to hold their ground... All the south is in their hands and Madrid protected by a ring of others provinces...
- Can we do nothing to help them ?
- No sir. We lack the ships to carry our forces there. Yet the new division was readied last month so I could spend some money in research, artillery pasteurisation and basic shipsbuiding being my main preoccupations...
- You do well, Arystos. Really.
- Thanks Sir. Oh, since I think about it... The predictions for the industrial improvement program are now achieved. We should grow to 44 IC. Too much for our meager ressources...
- Well, let's hope the Italians will act soon according to your plan...

Well MegaPIMP, I'll have to lower it quite quickly by high consumer goods production rates and good politicians ( if I have them... which I'm not sure at all ! ) :(

August 37, Arystos' office

- Sir, they are numerous reports of instability in the army... And she seems to spread to the rest of the people too...
- Hell I know Nikolaos ! I know ! They can't understand I needed those productions units for the new basic infantery technology research ! That's the only reason I suppressed the whole furniture orders of the army...
- Well, maybe Sir but there is a 10% unrest level in the country...
- Damn ! I'll have to produce more consumer goods ! And what does this imbecile of Logothetis ? He's security minister fod God's sake !
- Well... He does his best to quiet to people... They were two killed and twenty ingured in the latest clash between police and protesters...
- May they rest in peace ! To speak of something else, how does it goes in Spain ?
- Badly for the Republicans... They hold to the provinces of the extreme south of the country, the nationalists took the rest.
- And our effort to gain passage trough Turkey ?
- Nothing came out from those discussions yet. Speaking of moving, the new infrastructures projets are in full progress... And the macedonian wall has gotten some AA guns to defend herself.
- Good. Status of the army ?
- Still three groups of 5 regular infantry plus one with artillery supplement.
- Order two more groups and divert somme credit from research for them.
- Well, we are close to shortages in just about everything...
- Let's just hope the italians will move soon.

The year 1938 was a disapointing one for Arystos Pamphilos for it was the first of tree long years of privations. The stocks of rubber, oil and coal disapeared eaten by the industrial monster that Greece had become with it's 44 IC strong economy. Yet the year wasn't lost for everybody since 38 was the year of Franco's final victory over the Republicans and the year of the Anschluss.

The greek governement tried to keep it's industry working and finaly stabilised the situation at about 30 IC, less than what she had before the improvement program. Pamphilos was in a very bad mood till new years' day 39, when he learned that 10 new regular infantry divisions were ready for war and that the two others divisions he had ordered would be ready for the summer. That would give him 5 manoeuvre groups that he intended to use as much as possible.

The occasion was given to him in september of the same year, when a major clash erupted between France, the United Kingdom and Germany. The cause of this war had been the Danzig corridor, a small land passage between Eastern Prussia and Germany herself. When summoned to give the corridor to the German Reich, the Poles decided to go to war. They were quickly crushed and Hitler turned his steel legions toward France and the Benelux which were speedily dispatched with the Germans at the doors of Paris in early july 40.

Seing his chance, Pamphilos ordered two of his armies into Albania, which the Italians hadn't attacked. They captured Vlore the 3 september 39 and immediatly launched an attack on Tirana. There where 4 infantry divisions waiting for them who reppelled their first assault. Then a second one. The third army came to help the two first but the 18 greeks division could'nt take the city out of the hands of the Albanians who held despite heavy casualities. In a rage dign of an olympian divinity, Arystos ordered every greek division in the sector as well as the navy, who was to provide shore bombardement. A first 30 division assault was reppeled by the exausted Albanians, to the great surprise of the greek military staff. It was finaly the fifth ( ! ) assault which gave victory with the anihilation of the defender. The annexion was officially proclaimed le 23 of june 1940.

But the military war was'nt the only one he had to fight for internal dissension was hight at around 20%. So he decided to change his minister of armament for a pure capitalist who was able to quickly reduce the dissent to 8% a the time of the victory.

well... let's see what follow ! I attacked Bulgaria using an acces I had over yougoslavian soil... then Bulgaria went in Axis. So now I'm in 41 stuck behind my fortifications lines without a single man left and havig 16% dissent... I'll play till 42 before putting it into form for you hungry readers !

September 1940

Now that he had enough ressources to feed the greek industrial monster, Arystos Pamphilios could envisage the future serenely. Yet his objective was glory for his country and this half lost albanian campain was far from glorious. He had to find a new foe to fight, and rather quickly, before he'd ally with one of the major powers...

Willing to change his mind a bit and get some distance from day to day work, he decided to make a trip to Delphos, the well known oracle of ancient Greece and one of the most beautyfull landscape of the country.

There, he walked through the ruins, wandering without any but, only taking the majesty of the site and falling under the charm of the old stones... Suddenly he came in front of a little building, a "tresor" build by a victorious city to honnor Appolo, the local god. With his cultural background, he immediatly identified the buildind as the one called "The Thracian" because it had been erected by habitants of what had later become Bulgary.

Bulgary ! He had an answer to his questions ! It was a wonderful target, not too powerful and not allied yet... Adressing a mental prayer to the gods, he ran to his car where he startled his chauffeur who was told to drive as fast as he could...

Once in his office, he asked for his aide.

Nikolaos Aristides came immediatly and was stunned to hear a string of orders whose objective was the capture of the Bulgarian kingdom.

But, in his precipitation, Arystos had forgotten to look at his manpower stocks which were very close to zero...

The inital plan called for two multi-pronged attacks on Plovdiv and Sofia, the capital. In order to do so, an agreement was signed with Yougoslavia which agreed to give free acces to greek forces.

But the well reharshed plan failled due to the poor equipement of the men and the poor strategies of the generals who fought the war as a defensive one... Losses were severe, even if no unit was lost. A second assault proved as ill fated as the first. But this time they were no men to reinforce the depleted units...

Luckily, a mass of war refugee coming from Yougoslavia provided fresh troops in november who were able to fill the ranks. At the same time, Bulgaria allied with Germany and Yougoslavia came to the side of the Allies... The whole northern border of Greece was at risk !

Immediatly units were redeployed to Albania where 12 divisions took guarnison in Tirana. The tree others corps defended Vlore, Thessaloniki and Ioannina. No troops were left to guard the coasts, protect Athens or repel a turquish attack...

In this grim situation came in october a small miracle, the unplanned discovery of Basic Artillery.

During this time, civilian morale was at an all time low and dissent hight : 28% in september 40 !

The situation was critical, with the Germans ready to strike at the heavily bombarded Tirana when a war errupted between the Nazis and the Communists. immediatly, the pressure on the greek front lowered as forces were sent in the north, leaving shaken but still fighting Greeks in their fortress, the only problem being the german and italian aviations.

The 25 of may 1941, a Bulgarian scientist decided to leave his country for the land where Democracy had been invented. Under his arm was a thick report detailling the principle of the motorized warfare, an invaluable document for the technology starved greek army.

Speaking of technology, Arystos had decided by then that all availlable funds would be allocated to research, giving new and revolutionary weapons like flamme throwers and 100mm artillery guns...

This situation perdured until augustus 41...

July 1942 Tirana

One whole year enduring the continuous bombing of more than 20 dive and tactical bomber divisions. One year during wich planes were shot by the dozen. One year during which hundreds of men died from bombs, splinters, shells, bullets... During all this time, the 12 divisions under Field Marshall Papagos had not seen a single ennemy infantryman. Not a panzer. Just planes by dozens. The airspace was so crowded aver Tirana that planes had to queue before they could place theirs shoots... The men on the ground had become rats, living in deep underground facilities. AA guns emplacement hab been built, but to no avail. Level 2 land fortifications were ready to reppel assault, as were the level 1 coastal defenses. But no assault was comming. In the east, the Thessaloniki guarnison had tried to attacks on Plovdiv, two more failures due to a great lack of organisation. The thoerician of the war worked day and night to find solutions like this "Encirclement and destruction" doctrine they had presented in march. But it wasn't enough. The new 30mm AA guns had had their effect too. But the sheer number of ennemy planes made the priks they did to the Luftwaffe insensible for the hitlerians demons. Womens had been called to the factories in december 41, and the youth mobilized in may 42. Those fresh recrues had filled the ever more depleted ranks of the frontline units. 5 new montain infantery divisions had also been ordered by the hight command, but when would they enter the field ? And what to do ? To what usefulness ?

Air Marshall Sperle was onboard his own command plane, circling hight over the city. The glass cockpit provided him with a breathtaking view. A view of hell. More than a year that his pilots were bombing the Greeks. And yet they were still fighting, shotting at his planes... Hitler wanted the Greeks anihilated for their stubborn resistance. But time wasn't playing in his favor... Already some rumors had arrived from the russian front... The panzer could'nt pass the Dniepr... And in the south of the russian front, the troops were still fighting on the pre-war frontiers... The russians were mobilizings divisions upon divisions. Soon the German and their allies would lack men to feed the meat grinder. And then the Greeks would pull out like devils in theires boxes, taking the whole Balkans for themselve, maybe even Italy... This man the reports said was behind the war effort of the Greeks, this Pamphilios, knew that very well... He had supplies, an unscathed industry, oil, steel, coal, ... British rubber which came from the sea that the Italian had'nt been able to close... Sperle aide shaked him a bit : "Air Marshall, youre request to leave sector has been refused by the fürer. You must bomb the greeks to smithers. "
