You may notice some sector changes here that I didn't mention. These weill be explained below.

2251.03.14 Election
Taking over from the illustrious Diya Ironside as the leader of the moderates was military scientist Xiu Huang who hoped to use her predecessor’s legacy to secure the Moderates first majority in the Union Parliament. Standing against her as the head of the Loyalists was the military governor of the outer colonies IIya Statnik. The moderates had proven they could effectively lead a government but would the citizens of the Union entrust their futures to the relative unknown of Xiu Huang against the tried and tested leader of the Loyalists.

While the moderates were able to secure their first majority by the slim margin of two seats in the Union parliament it was a bitter victory for it had only been secured through the death of a hero. In the colonies the Secessionist Party showed a worrying growth that secured them fifty seats.

In the interlude between Star Marshals an occupation zone was set up around captured Athull space while the new colonies of the Novus Union were reorganized into a new state called the Outer Colonies. This was intended to counter the growth of secessionist parties by devolving power to the colonies.

Xiu Huang had become one of the foremost military scientists in the Novus Union through a ruthless drive towards progress in all its forms. True to her nature her first act as Star Martial was to begin the enlightenment of two pre ftl species. Next she began research into a new generation of military ships designated Cruisers. In 2255.09.02 the Warp Drive 2 project reached its completion under renowned scientist Jiao Tan's guidance.

Diplomatic efforts continued under the new Star Marshal and in 2256.04.11 these efforts paid off with a new non-aggression pact between the Novus Union and the neighbouring Kingdom of Yondarim.

During this period the Union Fleet saw little conflict besides the occasional skirmish with smugglers. The same could not be said for neighbouring powers.

The Coalition of Athull and the Herjiris League began to stoke the flames of conflict by putting pressure on local powers in an attempt to win their loyalty for the undoubted upcoming conflict. On the other side of Union space the Kingdom of Yondarim had decided to ignore its pacifist roots and had taken the fight to the Democratic Pirak Confederacy.

The Novus Union ignored these issues and focused its efforts into scientific advancement. This came to a head in 2258 when the enlightenment of the natives of Baakrot was declared a success.

Soon after this more bad news came for the Pirak Confederacy who had were still embroilled in a war with the Kingdom of Yondarim. The Royal Yv'Zorak Worlds had finished the integration of their vassals and had made their own move.

PHzOrNw.png

More news came from the Herjiris league that they had beaten an ally of the Athull and carved a new state out of them. The Athull had made their own gains however with the emergance of an allied power under the name of the Zaydran Bloc.

6STdlIl.jpg

The Athallid Allied Planets refused to align themselves with either power in this conflict but attempted to sign a defensive pact with their liberators in the Novus Union. This request was regretfully declined by the Moderates who feared being caught up in local conflicts. The Loyalists decried this as a betrayal of the liberated people but the fact was that the citizens of the Novus Union had no wish to be embroiled in another war so soon after the last.

The new Photecian Star Cartel quickly joined the Herjiris League clearly aligning itself with one side of the conflict.

Back in Novus Union space the year 2259 saw the emergence of a new threat in the Minton System. A survey ship reported some kind of hive in the asteroid belt. The fleet was dispatched but it was clear the threat had been underestimated and they soon had to initiate emergency warp.

RgIdK1v.png

An encounter with just one hive cluster.
Few ships were lost and the political fallout was greater than the actual military loss. Deciding to ignore the static threat for now Star Marshal cordoned off the Milton System and instead focused on new edicts which would bring in migration to those worlds that needed it. The occupied Athull space became an issue for the Star Marshal in 2261 with the emergence of a minor terrorist group. The Star Marshal began integration campagins for the Athull people and reorganized the occupied space into a seperate state that would, in theory, manage these issues.

Back in the Democratic Pirak Confederacy the Royal Yv'Zorak Worlds had won the war but with only the relatively minor concession of releasing two systems as an independent power. Of course this "independent power" would likely be consumed as quick as possible but given the position of the Confederacy it was a diplomatic masterpiece to end the war with such a small concession.

In 2263 Xiu Huang had to face her first crisis. The Cynn Shard contacted the Novus Union and ordered them to remove a number of nearby colonies. While the Fallen Empire's might was far above that of the Union the order was still refused as the Moderates had little hope of ever ruling again if they abandoned human worlds under the orders of an alien empire.

gwHI9IZ.jpg

The feared response came in 2263.03.23 when the Cynn Shard declared war upon the young Novus Union. Soon after the declaration of war an enemy fleet advanced into Union space. The Union fleet was utterly outmatched and fell back abandoning the Taygeta System to the enemies advance. It was clear that this war could not be won and in 2263.05.22 the Novus Union offered their surrender. Although the Union was allowed to keep its colonies it was forced to grovel and was humiliated by the superior Cynn Shard who had their own revenge.

2263.08.22 Election
The death of Xiu Huang at the hands of Cynn agents was a shock that split the Moderate party in two. The Moderate Lobby maintained much the same stance as the previous Moderate party and was seen as its true successor while the True Moderates argued for revenge. While revenge against the Cynn shard was of course unachievable the True Moderates saw all aliens as the enemy and suggested xenos slavery became legal. Meanwhile in the outer colonies feelings towards the capital began to improve and the Loyalists popularity began to rise as IIya Statnik showed his talent as a governor.

3mWBED4.png

The Moderate Lobby secured an increased majority with Admiral Honor MacDonald, a protégée of Ishaan Chandran himself, as their leader. The people of the Union had seen Xiu Huang die for the human cause and were sympathetic to the Moderate Lobby who promised to continue her work.

The Loyalists crushed the secessionist party under boot as they made the Outer Colonies their home turf. The Loyalists had been the key opposition party for some time now and gathered their support from promises of conquest against the Athull to one side and the Pirak Confederacy to the other.

Star Marshal Honor MacDonald
2263.08.22 - 2274.11.01

Extracts taken from the book "The Unions Daughter"
Star Marshal MacDonald was a true believer in the Union and the need to unite humanity. While she kept up the scientific works of Xiu Huang it became more and more obvious that resources were being diverted towards the fleet. Work on enlightening native species stopped completely as the fleet grew in both size and power for a planned offensive against the Athull who still remained between the Novus Union and the only other known human nation in the galaxy. In 2266.06.14 a defensive alliance was formed with the Kingdom of Yondarim who despite their pacifist ways had always proven to be loyal allies in the past. This was intended to ensure the protection of Union space during the planned campaign. Once again the Moderates showed their diplomatic skill. Excitement about the rumoured campaign increased on Novus Terra and the core colonies, where the fleet was being built, grew steadily despite the fact that no details had actually been released to the public.

This excitement came to nothing when by 2267 the campaign had still not emerged. In fact the expanded fleet had actually been sent to deal with some kind of enormous creature, named the blue wraith by scientists, that had been sporadically attacking mining stations and merchant shipping. The fleet was still not strong enough to deal with this creature but to the relief of the government the creature left of its own accord after a small skirmish with the military.

When the issue of the blue wraith had been dealt with Star Marshal MacDonald hoped to be able to launch her campaign but it was once again delayed when the looming Royal Yv'Zorak Worlds issued a worrying threat.

cHbqGvp.png

Star Marshal MacDonald declined to become a mere vassal state but she was forced to once again delay her planned offensive in order to build up defences against a probable invasion. The Royal Yv'Zorak Worlds still held a significant edge in technology and size. In order to close the technological gap a research agreement was secured with the Athallid Allied Planets who despite their small size still had access to the advanced technology they had as part of the Coalition of Athull. A secondary research agreement was arranged with the Kingdom of Yondarim.

The Union was surrounded by threats on all sides. Fallen Empires loomed above and below human space with unknown motives. To the left the cold war between the Coalition of Athull and the Herjiris League threatened to ignite. To the right the Kingdom of Yondarim was still at war with the Pirak Confederacy while the Royal Yv'Zorak Worlds made moves of their own. Yes I am aware these directions dont actually apply in space as they would on earth but it is the easiest way to describe the galaxy map.

By 2270 the Royal Yv'Zorak Worlds had still not made any moves against the Novus Union and so Star Marshal MacDonald turned her hand back to internal affairs. In order to increase citizen opinion of the government she passed the "native species rights act" which prevented the Novus Union and its vassals from interfering directly with native species. All previous laws allowing for the technological enlightenment of natives were also repealed.

In 2271 some kind of giant metallic orb was found orbiting a black hole in a Novus Union system. Scientists were able to determine it was some kind of incredibly advanced AI and were able to make contact with it.

EB77A1x.png

The metal sphere seemed unsurprised to meet the Novus Union survey ship who were trying to speak to it. It was established that this orb was attempting to solve an immense mathematical problem. Novus Union survey ships were sent to assist it in the hope that technological advancements might be gleaned from this odd sphere.

In 2271 the cruiser project was completed and work began on producing these new ships that would lead the Union fleet. Improvements made to the administration of the fleet also allowed for a greater number of ships to be built. With these new advantages Star Marshal MacDonald felt it was time to strike and she declared war on the Democratic Pirak Confederacy. If the war went as planned it would prevent the Royal Yv'Zorak worlds from expanding further and end the Kingdom of Yondarims war with the Confederacy which continued to drag on.

The Star Marshal held the power to declare war independently from the Union Paliament but it was customary to seek nominal approval anyway. The Moderates were not eager to declare a preemptive war against a nation that had never threatened the Unions borders but the Star Marshal Honor MacDonald was able to push the declaration of war through using an alliance of Loyalist and Moderate members who supported the war. This lead to the war being named Honors War after the Star Marshal

UoYOUcE.png

Just as the fleet was about to set off the word came that the regenerative armour project had been completed. While this new hull plating promised huge benefits the time and resources to upgrade the fleet did not exist. The Star Marshal ordered the fleet to attack without being upgraded betting that the Cruisers and expanded fleet would be enough to swing the war.

The fleet quickly entered the system of Broome which had already been occupied by the Kingdom of Yondarim. From here the fleet departed to the system of Pirazur which held the enemies capital world. As the war continued the reason for the Royal Yv'Zorak Worlds reluctence to go to war became obvious. Newly discovered powers such as the Glorious League and the Divine Valurt Accord had become a threat to their neighbour as they grew.

xh7LHHE.jpg

It seemed that the Democratic Pirak Confederacy had already seen its fleet defeated at the hands of the Kingdom of Yondarim as soon the capital was under siege with little attempt made to stop the Union fleets bombardment. General Hala El-Baz led the attack on the planet and despite her relative inexperience in command was victorious with minimal losses.

1KaVpb1.png

As the war neared its end the infinity machine decided to end its cooperation with humanity but in return for their help it offered advanced AI technology that had the ability to create sentient machines. Soon afterwards the Cynn Shard once again ordered the Novus Union to remove its colonies from the space it considered its own. Once again the order was refused despite the risk involved. Just before the election the Cynn Shard declared war once more and their fleets advanced on the outer colonies.

2273.11.22 Election
With the rebel moderates and the secessionists relegated to a single seat each in the last election it was clear to all that this would be a competition between the Loyalists and the Moderates. The Loyalists had now been out of power for over 50 years but they had continued to be a significant political force under IIya Statnik who was the veteran leader of the Loyalist party.

jHuBJGM.png

The Moderates secured a majority once again, largely due to the success of the current war. The Loyalists and the Moderates remained the only parties in the Parliament.

Soon after the success of the election Honor MacDonald the Pirak Confederacy surrendered and their systems were divided between the Kingdom of Yondarim and the Novus Union. In contrast to this success the Unions surrender to the Cynn Shard was announced as a side note. Star Marshal MacDonald hoped to avoid the fate of Xiu Huang by announcing the Unions surrender before a battle had even taken place but the Cynn Shard were merciless and dispatched the current Star Marshal much like they had former. Star Marshal Honor MacDonald saw less than a year of her second term.

I swear to god these fallen empires honestly. Stop killing my leaders

It seems that in the future Union will have a holiday like Halloween or Thanksgiving: "In the past, every ten years Cynn Shard kill our Star Marshal, but we defeated them. So let's eat!":)

xD I suspect it will be a lot harder to find people who want to become Star Marshal now. The risk of death is worryingly high.

Been reading thru this for a few days. Just want to say I greatly enjoy it. Wonderful AAR. Keep up the great work.

Cheers!

Yeah. Sometimes I feel bad when I'm reading but not commenting. I know, as someone who has written multiple AARs, that sometimes a few comments are wonderful signs of encouragement. So I just wanted to make my presence known.

Real life problems always get in the way. No reason to apologize for those! :p

Due to irl issues im putting this on hold for a while. I do plan to come back to this but frequent updates are not going to be happening any time soon

A very nice read! You've got my subscription.:) Too bad about those Fallen Empires, though...
