The Irish Band did rather well for themselves, don't you think? (I just wish I could have figured out how to grab that land for myself. I was the King of Ireland, after all (among others))

Can you play as a mercenary company? Is it viable in any way?

Yes, with the console. No, it's not really viable--you get a free army while you're unlanded, and once you're landed you have to pay upkeep for them, which is staggeringly high. Other characters can hire your mercenaries, but you don't get any of the money they pay. You also can't get ducal or higher titles without using the console.
 
So....I don't know how this is happened, but the Swedish Atheist Rebel Emperor had a legitimised bastard daughter that showed up in the marriage lists...so I betrothed her of course. Now I just wait for my inheritable weak claim on the empire of rebels...
 
Somehow these two managed to arrest each other.
