This happened after I took Rome as a Merchant Republic. I felt bad and granted him the County of Rome back, and he rewarded me by becoming "Il Merchant Papa". Unfortunately on death the title returned to normal Papacy, but the 5 merchant families hung around.

Not exactly a screenshot, but I was looking through the defines when suddenly...

BOTTLENECK_CHOKE_TROOP_CAP = 300, -- THIS IS SPARTAAAAAAAAA!!!!

The mother of civil wars: All three of Ruthenia's previous kings are laying claim to the throne, and there is also a group of vassals making a bid for independence. Things really went downhill since Rogvolod the Wise died, who had also owned Poland and seriously kicked my ass when I messed with him (I am Tartaria [Great Kyrgyzstan]).

Small update: The independence rebels won, but all three of the ex-kings lost. Then the unlanded one tried again straight after as an adventurer, but lost again. That King Roman is a badass.

Just look at this bugger: not only he's Karling Pope and brother to other Karling Pope, he's also going around, challenging people for personal combat. Thank you, Earl Conall of Berik, good riddance.

All those karling popes,

Fucking karlings.

876, House... wait for it... Akhi Jumieges.
What the balls is Akhi Jumieges? And what is it's culture and religion?

Good question. I think I've ended up with a non-vanilla set of dynasties, probably a hangover of the messing around I was doing with the Kingdoms Abound mod. Running a search for Karling, for example, doesn't bring up anyone.
It doesn't seem to have affected much but the names of characters, though.

The Emperor's culture is listed as Alto Aragónian (I get the feeling this is non-vanilla, too), and his religion is Catholic.

In other strange news, Pomerania exists. They are of course Norse, but the land was originally taken off the HRE by an alliance of Slavic counties before the Swedes muscled in. It was most amusing to watch a two-county duke attack the HRE andwin.

How did Pomerania manage it?

The best thing is that this is how Rome should be in Vanilla, a semi-autonomous city-state with patricians that give the Pope severe headaches from time to time, and sometimes (twice) overthrow His rule and proclaim the Roman Republic back for some years.

By the way, this Pope John looks like a Mexican with a bad lifting operation gone wrong, while his pancreas has given up and his liver is almost there too.
