Crusades have nothing to do with relative strength. The Pope is counting all the other Christian rulers to join and fight the war for him, how many troops he himself has has no bearing on anything.
That said there should really be a diminished returns for crusades so he doens't call the same crusade over and over.

I was developing a quaint merchant republic empire, slowly but surely taking over the entire coastline of northern Europe. My plan was to control the entire Baltic sea, and leave the orthodox to their attempt at a new Roman Empire.

Then Wales decided to take the whole of Spain in a crusade. So I spent the next few years basically subdividing the whole place. My general thinking was that a Merchant Republic has no use for landlocked provinces, I will likely try another Merchant Republic Empire with the goal of taking every single coastal province.

I now have a threat level of 80% after taking Saxony, and have no real idea what to do now.

If you can get Spain away from Wales and then release it, that'll kill your threat.

The heir to the Byzantine Empire turned turkish and converted very shortly after the collapse of the ERE, and Constantinople was sacked and occupied by the Genoan's earlier.

So this game got interesting, if dangerous. The Byzantine Empire is ruled by a Catholic, and the Holy Roman Empire is ruled by an Orthodox.

Also, they're married to each other.

Also, they're both Agilolfings.

On a brighter note, I thought I'd share this guy, who was a great comforting force in my empire:

Zdislav the Drunkard was a loyal friend through multiple lieges, and he was not only my Chancellor, but my Court Physician, Court Eunuch, and Court Dwarf, as well. He was an excellent chancellor, too! Everyone loved the fat drunk dwarf with the high voice that could cure your ills, even if he was stubborn and cruel at times.

I don't get it.

Will you still get the points if you commit suicide?
You can't interact with yourself so the mission becomes unfullfillable.
