The end of an Era

Crisisman said:
I just wanted to leave a small follow up to this.

First, It was an enjoyable experience. It is the first complete campaign I have been able to play. I ran into a few bugs, but nothing that threatened to be a game stopper. I also learned a number of things that I'll change next time through.

Speaking of next time through...I won't do another AAR. It just takes a lot of time and I have to work overtime to pay for my new car (new GTO...a lot of fun to drive)

I do have a final tally of naval combat aces and honorable mentions. I'll leave you with that.

Honarable mentions go to those vessels that managed to sink 4 enemy units. They are:
(nation - vessel - most notable kill)
Argentina - ARA Moreno(BB) - USS 4th Light Carrier Group(CV)
Canada - HMCS Ontario(CL) - Sank 4 U-boat groups(SS)
Japan - IJN Kirishima(BC) - USS Northampton(CA)
Italy - RM Giulio Cesare(BB) - HMS Kent(CA)
USA - 9th Destroyer Division(DD) - Sank 4 U-boat groups(SS)
USA - USS Columbia(CL) - Sank 4 U-boat groups(SS)
USA - USS Salt Lake City(CA) - IJN Sendai(CL), IJN Jintsu(CL)
USA - USS New Orleans(CA) - IJN Chokai(CA), IJN Nachi(CA)
USA - USS Yorktown(CV) - ARA Almirante Brown(CA), IJN Izumo(CA)

Now, the aces, in reverse order for suspense:
(nation - vessel - #kills - most notable kill)
Germany - KMS Barbarossa(CV) - 5 - USS Memphis(CL)
USA - USS Arizona(BB) - 5 - IJN Kinu(CL)
Germany - KMS Amerika(CV) - 7 - USS Savannah(CL), USS Honolulu(CL)
Italy - RM Caio Duilio(BB) - 7 - Destroyers and Transports
Japan - IJN Kongo(BC) - 8 - USS St.Paul(CA)
Germany - KMS Rheingold(CV) - 9 - USS Enterprise(CV), HMS Warspite(BB)
Japan - IJN Hyuga(BB) - 9 - USS Pensacola(CA)
Germany - KMS Friedrich der Grosse(BB) - 10 - HMS Sverige(BC)
Germany - KMS Grossdeutschland(BB) - 11 - HMAS Brisbane(CL), Jeanne D'Arc(CL)
Germany - KMS Seydlitz(CV) - 12 - NRB Sao Paulo(BB)
Italy - RM Andrea Doria(BB) - 15 - HMAS Kingston(CA)
Germany - KMS Bismarck(BB) - 17 - USS 1st Light Carrier Division(CV)
Germany - KMS Seeloewe(CV) - 18 - USS Wasp(CV), USS Essex(CV), Ocean(BB)
Germany - KMS Tirpitz(BB) - 22 - HMS Argus(CV), HMS Revenge(BB), USS Pennsylvania(BB)
Germany - KMS Clausewitz(CV) - 28 - USS Bunker Hill(CV), USS Hornet(CV), USS New Mexico(BB), ARE Espana(BB)
Germany - KMS Peter Strasser(CV) - 58 - USS Ranger(CV), USS Yorktown(CV), USS Saratoga(CV), HMS Barham(BB), ARC Almirante Latorre(BB), USS Mississippi(BB)

***and the top scoring naval unit in the game***

Germany - KMS Graff Zeppelin(CV) - 64 - USS Intrepid(CV), USS Bunker Hill(CV), USS Franklin(CV), USS Independence(CV), NRB Minas Gerais(BB), USS West Virginia(BB), USS North Carolina(BB), USS Washington(BB)

Note that there are a couple of repeat names...the computer reuses names of sunk ships.

Enjoy!

Wicked AAR! I have spent the last week reading it all during lunch in the office. By the way, I wrongly assumed you were on holidays or something! Where do you get the time to play so much? I get a couple of hours on a Friday night if I'm lucky.

One query, what experience level did your commanders reach? Did you keep switching FM's and Generals to use your best in major engagements?

It's a shame there won't be another AAR form you. But thanks for this one.

Could you leave us with a screenie of North America so we can see how much you got in the peace settlement? I would also love some shots of all of your research categories but especially the secret weapons.

I tried to take an F11 of the end screen, but when I closed the game it hadn't saved.(I also noticed that F11 doesn't seem to work for the statistics screens either)

The peace settlement was rather crappy, the US and Canada kept all of their territory, but I got to keep everything I had annexed. Someone might consider redoing the US surrender event and, at the very least, have them lose everything not in the 48 states.(Alaska and Hawaii were not states at that time)

For secret weapons, I had Nuclear CV and BB under construction and Nuclear SS in service. I had turbojet fighters, tactical bombers and naval bombers. I had fission bomb(what a waste of resources...New York got their IC back when I reloaded the game...that's why I never used the other 2 nukes I had built by game end.) I had SAM and the computer techs. The rest of them were well short of their prerequisites.

One interesting note was that Japan had a nice little CV fleet at the end of the game consisting of the original Akagi and Kaga, plus 3 newer CVs built after the start of the war. Only 1 Japanese battleship survived the war, and they never even tried to build the Yamato/Musashi.

@Eddy Gemmell - I did have vacation during these last two weeks, but I can usually get an hour or two of gaming in during an evening. As for commander experience, I didn't really keep track. When I created a new corps/group I assigned a good leader and promoted as necessary, then I let them be. The only time I changed leaders for a specific campaign was in Scandinavia.(Edit: I also changed some leaders in the Balkans...Yugo was a tough little fight in Winter)

Enjoy!

Great AAR! This is the way to go with Germany it seems. I must also add I'm very impressed with you managing to keep all that territory occupied and kept the partisans in check as well. Nice work! :D

Great AAR, pls liberate Spain. ;)

May 20, 1945 : With representatives present from Germany, Italy, Japan, Manchukuo and Argentina, the leaders of Canada and the United States of America signed the documents of formal surrender.

Congatulations Crisisman. It's really impressive :)

Damn!! Must emulate power of the Third Reich...

1. Domestic Policies
We shall pursue policies aimed at balancing an absolute respect for my authority and absolute control over strategic industries with an open society in which the German may live as they choose and enjoy the finer things of life. We shall raise the best trained army money can buy. We shall hawkishly seek opportunities to intervene in world affairs and bring new territories and peoples into the Reich.

How are you able to pursue an open society? In my - limited - experience with this game, this isn't really possible with Germany.

It just means that I keep the slider as far left as possible. This slider is the biggest single controller of how much partisan trouble you get.

And to answer the other question, I don't recall where the US capital changed to the first time. I do remember seeing it in Syracuse, NY at one point, but it may have changed 2 or 3 times by then.

Ah, okay. Thanks.
It's been a great read and I must say I'm very impressed with the way you were able to build up your forces prior to the war. And the war itself, off course. :)
I'm having all sorts of problems trying to do the same.

great job :)

Nice AAR as many have said, read it just now the whole way through, marathon.

Many question but for now if you feel up to answering another question what exactly did you build when you started. I know you said 3xInfantry series and ships... when did you bring in Pz and Mechs ect... Any Motorised Inf?

If I missed it in the reading sorry... been at it for a good couple of hours now.
