Spanish AAR 1570-1590

The FAL of France

Althought the war wasnt going much in favour of Spain, we were smart enough to peace England imediately (giving them a COT)... They never did us any harm, anyway. I guess that was the punishment for believing on some dirty backstabbers. You know, the ones that told me that England was an enemy of Spain... What was their name again? Vene... Vene... Venetians! These buggers are so unimportant i almost forgot their name! But i am so merciful i also offered peace to Venice - giving them a soundly amount of 1000 shiny gold coins. As a part of the peace proposal, I promised to peace France, shortly before Venice peaced me, but i never said how, or when. ;)

Alba is quickly given a huge amount of infantry to command, about 60.000 men, in order to assault french forts so that i could get 99 WS and force peace the bastards. Little more then 1 year after game start meant... Sucess! Damn, i am a genious. Machiavelli would be proud of me.

His Imperial Majesty, Filipe II, King of Spain and Portugal

In the end, i loose a COT - which was, pretty hard to defend and it would be giving a lot of free WS to my enemies. So i guess it was good to loose it after all. To compensate, i earnt 4 french provinces, which had 1 refinery and gave me MP. And we cant forget that by doing such i hurted France somewhat... France is too overpowered on the UMP, so i guess that made things a little better for me. Even though i never wanted French cultured provinces...

Serrenissima Republica di Veneza

Ah! I always wondered why Venice was called a "Serene Republic". First, it was never Serene - if it became strong it was all thanks to warfare. Secondly, it was never a Republic, but rather, an autocratic regime. After they backstabbed me, i was nice enough to give them 1000d and even told them i would give them mainland Italy if they conquered Tunisia and gave it to me. But, for a second time, i was cheated. Venice peaces Turkey, without demanding anything, while keeping at the same time the 1000d i gave them... Is there no honour these days? Where are the Chivalric Knights that would die in order to keep their words?

It was clear after this, that Venice could not be an ally of Spain - at least not with the ruling backstabbing monarch. Althought Machiavelli would be proud of me from my past conduct on the last war, he would be ashamed of what i did now, and previously.

Machiavelli said:
He who causes another to become powerful ruins himself.

True words! How could i forget that phrase! So small, but so important! If Venice was so strong it was all thanks to me. I was such a fool to let Venice grow so powerful, specially, if it was Spain that made Venice so strong. But now i was ready to undo my mistakes. Once and for all. An alliance is struck with the Turks. I told them i would give them Alexandria, plus the 2 islands on the aegean, if they allied with me. Hell, i even finance them, so that they can build a fleet.

The 2nd big gang against Spain and yet another backstab...

War is declared on Venice. I tell France to stay away. I even promise to give them the french provinces they lost previously. But they do not believe me, and join the war eitherway. As a result my progress in Italy is hampered, and i need yet again to get the bulk of my army in Iberia. For the early stage of the war, no battle takes place. Indeed, the war was pretty static. But hopefully my French enemy was smart enough to push into Iberia, which was being defended by Alessandro Farnense himself - a Spaniard born in Mallaca (boy, this pissed me heavily... the bastard decided to spawn in Mallaca in my previous war! I am so unlucky!).

The Great Alessandro Farnese, nephew of Filipe II himself

I am smart enough to let the French swept through my lands... And they are dumb enough to do it! It seems the French are still too Impetous like they were during the Hundred Years War... Hopefully! Lots of french small armies besiege provinces here and there in Iberia. I just grab my entire army together and smash them all, one by one! Ah! But then something totaly unexpected happened. The Turks separatedly peaced out. I was left alone. If that is not enough, they attack me shortly afterwards! What the...?! Turkey+France+Venice against Spain... The future looked grim. But all was not lost! Due to these French actions i had just crushed their army and gained a lot of WS. Which i used to stab hit Venice. :)

Didnt take much time till Venice accepted one of them, for my great displeasure. In North africa the turks were attacking me with great cavalry armies. Something i never saw on a good while. I still wonder why people mass cavalry these days, in such great numbers. Are they not aware that cavalry got no fire phase, and that their shock value is only 2x times superior to infantry, and that cavalry stinks in most provinces, and that their shock value is nullified by great leaders such as Farnense? Hopefully for me, they do not. After peacing Venice and France i quickly send my army to deal with the Turkish bastards, and even pillage their capital. In the end, i am merciful again, and demand only Tunis as peace proposal. I think that is my problem. I am too merciful. I should inflict all possible harm in my enemies. As Machiavelli himself stated many times...

Machiavelli said:
Men should either be treated generously or destroyed, because they take revenge for slight injures - for heavy ones they cannot.

I just hope the Turks recognize that their have nothing to fear from me, and that we can be good friends like before. But if they do not, i fear they will share the same fate as Venice. Anyway, in a short resume: i was evilish backstabbed by France and the Turks - but i got 5 provinces from the war in the end. But i did not win the war due to my skills, but, thanks to Ear! Kudos to you Ear! I would have never won so easily if you never gave me so much WS against Venice!

The 3rd war of French Agression

Ah yes, after having gloriously beaten KJ's lovely Venice, i thought things would be made easier for me - but he decides to move to France. Jesus... I also thought we could have a steady peace for a good while, at least while Farnense and Alba were alive (and Spinola in the future). So much so that i finally annex Granada and the Mayans. But France wants nothing more then war, at least, with Spain. So much so that they declare war on Spain again, on their own. I still wonder what KJ was thinking, specially, when Farnense is still alive. So after a couple of French initiatives, the Spanish army swepts through French lands, getting almost as far as Paris.

The Temple of Kukulkan, built by the Mayans

Although Spain is winning greatly, i must tell everyone that i have been fighting this war defensively, and i never wanted more provinces from France itself. But after loosing so many men and so much money and precious time, it is obvious i need to get a couple of provinces to pay off my expenses, and, obviously, punish the French bastards for their insolence.

The Vassalization of France and The Anti-Austrian coalition

After the bloody war against Henri's France, the latter decided to become a vassal of Spain to stop the current war and possibly any future one. Filipe II was indeed happy. All of Spain celebrated such a feat. Alessandro Farnese returned to Madrid after countless years of campaign and was greeted by the people as a hero. Sadly, for us, he had to depart soon, because, once again, war broke trough all of europe. A major coalition of Poland-Bradenburg-Ottoman Empire-Netherlands decided to attack Austria. Sweden tried to help as much as possible, but they didnt manage to do much.

Netherlands, with Maurice of Nassau, was an oponent to be scared of, and so, we tried to aliviate the Austrians by attacking these bloody bastards. Maurice that was on a campaign on north germany, soon withdrew back to the Dutch mainland. Faced with superior numbers by far, it didnt take too much time till they peaced us. The Turks also quickly peaced Austria after they saw our mighty fleet composed of 1000 galleys near Instanbul. As for Bradenburg, the biggest backstaber in europe at this precise moment, was forced to give many provinces to Austria in the end.

Filipe III, the first incompetent King of Spain

The Reign of Filipe III - The first genetical incident

Soon afterwards, poor Filipe II found himself on his bed, sick, and almost near death. Before dying, the King confessed that God had not given him a son able of governing a large empire such as Spain, and that his son, Filipe III, would end being governed by his servants. Sadly for him, this turned out to be true. Filipe III, once inherited his father's throne, simply gave away the entire administration to Francisco Goméz de Sandoval, the rich and powerful Duke of Lerma.

The Duke of Lerma was a greedy man, the type of men that would use any means necessary to achieve his goals. During this time many convertions were performed, mostly due to the insistence of the King. The King was incompetent, and passed most of his life on court festivities, where enourmous sums of money were wasted, but he was a pious man. Many merchants are also sent through the entire world, in order to increase our fame and wealth. Although it was a shame for the King to give so much power to the Duke, virtually making him the de facto King of Spain, the Duke was an able men. During his rule the Spanish economy, which suffered from countless wars and backstabs, and from a lot of inflation, thrived.

The Powerful Duke of Lerma

In this period there were also 4 things worthy of noting: a war with Venice, the inquisition in Granada, an epidemic plague and the secession of Sfax from the part of the Turks. The war with Venice didnt go as planned since the AI simply refused to give up more then 50% WS even when i had 99%. The inquisition wanted to burn many moors, but the King didnt allow such barbarian acts. Maybe God didnt like that, and punished us with a major plague. Later on a deal was struck with the Turks, in which they gave us Sfax, for everyone's joy.

The Spanish Golden Age seems to be coming to an end, but we arent ambitious and we do not seek war with any of our neighbours (we could have seriously crippled France in our previous war). We also remain the only Kingdom that has kept its word on all deals. We hope that people will remember these things.

Special Edits: Due to a rehost with a client save, the Epidemic Plague fire twice. I lost 1 stability point (which was equivalent to 1004d at that stage). Since i am at +3 stability i ask 1004d to be invested into technology. The event also lowered manpower through my provinces, and population to a lesser degree. The MP hit rounded about 6 if i remember properly, so, if possible, please edit it (just add some extra manpower in some province).
