Chapter 7
The war in the Reach
When compared to the carnage of The War of the Five Kings and the subsequent fighting that came following Stannis defeat of House Bolton, the Stark restoration and the Targaryen landing in the Stormlands, the war in The Reach was by all accounts a fairly modest affair. While The Reach is the most powerful militarily and populous region in Westeros the Ironborn invasion had thrown the region into chaos. Ironborn longships sailed the mander at their leisure, reaving the lands of lords opposing their takeover. Following the sack of Highgarden and the displacement of House Tyrell many southern houses bent the knee to spare themselves similar fates while many northern lords continued to resist. Mace Tyrell and his family had managed to depart Highgarden and head for King’s Landing. A valiant rearguard action led by Garlan the Gallant and Lord Caswell at Bitterbridge saw most of the Tyrell host safely evacuated into the Crownlands.
The army Aegon had gathered outside Kings Landing was mostly made up of Golden Company veterans, hedge knights and lesser sellswords. Only a bare minimum was drafted from the already spent Crownland levies. Together with the Tyrell host it still numbered a respectable twenty thousand men with another fifteen thousand from the Stormlands and a surprising thirty thousand from the West.
“Lord Tymond most have levied the old, sick and lame as well” Duck japed as the war council received the report. “Your pet lion is eager to prove himself to his new master your grace” Obara stated, voice laced with the usual venom used when Lannisters were discussed. On this campaign King Aegon also took two squires. Monterys Velaryon, lord of Driftmark and one Edric Storm, a bastard of Robert Baratheon that Lord Valtris Sunglass had managed to recover from his exile/safehouse in Lys. Edric had been hesitant at first, but had found himself at ease when it was made clear that Aegon had no intention of ending House Baratheon. Edric would squire for Aegon and then be wed to Shireen Baratheon. House Baratheon would be back where it began, as household warriors of House Targaryen
Aegons army entered the Reach in the Ninth month of 302AC marching towards Tumbleton. Lord Footly was in the field when Aegon’s army arrived. Lord Footly’s heir Ser Ryam Footly surrendered the city and castle in his father’s name and sent riders to reach lord Footly. Franklyn Footly arrived 4 days later and formally swore fealty on behalf of House Footly. HIs castle and family were returned to him and Aegon’s army continued towards Torrenpeak, the seat of House Ambrose. On the way from Tumbleton to Torrentpeak a rider from King’s Landing caught up and delivered joyous news. Queen Arianne was with child.
These news drove Aegon on. As no Ironborn host had materialized Aegon split his force, taking half towards Goldengrove personally and sending Ser Garlan towards Bitterbridge with the other half. Garlan arrived first and upon informing Lord Caswell about what was going on Lord Caswell bent the knee and fell in with the other Reachlord, joining Aegon's Campaign. Garlan sent a message to Aegon via both rider and raven declaring Bitterbridge subjugated and his intention to seize Longtable next. The messenger arrived just as Aegon was accepting Lord Rowan’s oath of fealty. Castle Goldengrove had initially resisted under the command of Mathis Rowans son but had yielded when the Rowan host arrived and dipped its banners before Aegon’s army. Mathis Rowan provided over three thousand men from his levy, which was more than ten times the casualties suffered so far. Lord Mathis remained at Goldengrove while Aegon marched towards Red Lake. Upon arriving at Red Lake Aegon received disturbing news. An Ironborn host had sailed up The Mander and taken Ser Garlan by surprise. The defeat was not catastrophic however and Ser Garlan had conducted a professional withdrawal North of The Mander. It was a stark reminder however that The Iron Fleet could not be discounted.
The Ironborn force Garlan the Gallant back
The yielding of Red Lake followed shortly. The lands had been plagued by disease and Lord Rycherd Crane had no will to continue fighting. Soon afterwards a messenger from Old Oak arrived. House Oakheart swore fealty but could sadly not come in person due to their lands also being ravaged by disease. Lord Olyvar Oakheart being bedridden and his family and household forbidden from leaving the castle. This left Aegon in control of most of The Reach North of The Mander and several lords South of The Mander still in open rebellion.
The Reach following “The Northern Campaign”
With the subjugation of the Northern Reach complete Aegon turned his army back towards Bitterbridge. Declaring his intent to smash the Ironborn host that drove off Ser Garlan. Aegon’s army linked up with Ser Garlands remaining forces near Dosk and started Marching East again. It was when camped at Bitterbridge, preparing for an advance down The Mander that Aegon received news that Queen Arianne had given birth to a beautiful baby girl. While the thought of not being there for his child’s birth gnawed at him the importance of securing The Reach, and the wellbeing of the his realm had to come first, he was sure of it. Arianne would surely forgive him, the realm must come first, always. Grand Maester Agrivane wrote that both mother and child were in good condition.
The next day Aegon’s army broke camp and began marching down the Roseroad, making straight for Highgarden. The royal army would encounter the Ironborn host as it was laying siege to Cider Hall. With the Ironborn all busy looking the wrong way they were caught off guard and spearheaded by the Golden Company veterans the royal army cut through the Ironborn host with surprising ease. Granted the Ironborn were outnumbered almost two to one but the casualty ratio after the battle was ten Ironborn for every one man of The Royal Army. Ser Garlan had every Ironborn man captured hung as pirates along The Mander. Shortly following this every noble house of the Iron Isles were declared outlaws, to be captured and hung as pirates. Those who surrendered would face trail for the same crime. Soon after the victory at Cider Hall the royal army resumed its march on Highgarden, meeting the remains of the Ironborn host two days march away. Despite timely reinforcements from The Iron Isles the Royal Army was victorious again. The Ironborn failing to find a defense against Ser Garlans heavy horse. Lord Jon Connington and Tymond Lannister would later arrive to mop up Ironborn stragglers before joining the siege lines around Highgarden.
Ironborn sacking had done severe damage to the once magnificent castle. Its whitewashed walls were covered on soot and ash, its gardens and hedge mazes burnt, its towers bearing the scars of Ironborn siege weapons. The Castle’s great godswood with its three weirwood trees had been fully cut down to build more ships. With the outermost of its three walls breached and damaged in several places the Ironborn force left behind to defend it had fallen back to the second wall, the charred remnants of Highgardens great hedge maze still providing a reasonable hindrance for any attempt to scale the second wall with ladders or bring rams into place. Command of the siege was handed to Ser Garlan who knew the castle and all its weak points. With the arrival of Jon Connington and Tymond Lannister the besieging force numbered nearly eighty thousand men compared to the around five thousand defenders trapped in Highgarden. The Siege would last for nearly four moons before the second wall was breached under Ser Garlan’s relentless bombardment.
Ser Garlan himself led the vanguard through the breach and was the one to raise the Tyrell banner on Highgarden’s tallest tower, the entire Ironborn garrison was put to the sword and King Euron himself was dragged before Aegon and Garlan in chains. Garlan had the would-be-king hanged like a common criminal.
With the death of their king The Ironborn withdrew fully from The Reach. Ser Garlan would spend the following weeks recovering The Shield Isles, thus stomping out the last Ironborn remnants. Houses Chester, Grimm and Serry were restored to their respective lordships. House Hewett however was extinct in the male line and as such Aegon awarded Oakenshield to Ser Garlan with the eager approval of Lord Mace Tyrell. Additionally Willas Tyrell was made the new Master of Laws and would hold The Reach’s seat on the small council. The recovery of The Reach had taken just over a year and a half, having missed the birth of his first child king Aegon set a rapid pace home to Kings Landing.
