Always nice to be able to surprise a major noble.

A tame lion in the West is preferable to a West in anarchy. Also its nearly 30000 swords pointed at the Iron Isles.
Also I dont have dragons, gotta resort to humanoid allies.

Chapter 7
The war in the Reach

When compared to the carnage of The War of the Five Kings and the subsequent fighting that came following Stannis defeat of House Bolton, the Stark restoration and the Targaryen landing in the Stormlands, the war in The Reach was by all accounts a fairly modest affair. While The Reach is the most powerful militarily and populous region in Westeros the Ironborn invasion had thrown the region into chaos. Ironborn longships sailed the mander at their leisure, reaving the lands of lords opposing their takeover. Following the sack of Highgarden and the displacement of House Tyrell many southern houses bent the knee to spare themselves similar fates while many northern lords continued to resist. Mace Tyrell and his family had managed to depart Highgarden and head for King’s Landing. A valiant rearguard action led by Garlan the Gallant and Lord Caswell at Bitterbridge saw most of the Tyrell host safely evacuated into the Crownlands.

The army Aegon had gathered outside Kings Landing was mostly made up of Golden Company veterans, hedge knights and lesser sellswords. Only a bare minimum was drafted from the already spent Crownland levies. Together with the Tyrell host it still numbered a respectable twenty thousand men with another fifteen thousand from the Stormlands and a surprising thirty thousand from the West.

“Lord Tymond most have levied the old, sick and lame as well” Duck japed as the war council received the report. “Your pet lion is eager to prove himself to his new master your grace” Obara stated, voice laced with the usual venom used when Lannisters were discussed. On this campaign King Aegon also took two squires. Monterys Velaryon, lord of Driftmark and one Edric Storm, a bastard of Robert Baratheon that Lord Valtris Sunglass had managed to recover from his exile/safehouse in Lys. Edric had been hesitant at first, but had found himself at ease when it was made clear that Aegon had no intention of ending House Baratheon. Edric would squire for Aegon and then be wed to Shireen Baratheon. House Baratheon would be back where it began, as household warriors of House Targaryen
Aegons army entered the Reach in the Ninth month of 302AC marching towards Tumbleton. Lord Footly was in the field when Aegon’s army arrived. Lord Footly’s heir Ser Ryam Footly surrendered the city and castle in his father’s name and sent riders to reach lord Footly. Franklyn Footly arrived 4 days later and formally swore fealty on behalf of House Footly. HIs castle and family were returned to him and Aegon’s army continued towards Torrenpeak, the seat of House Ambrose. On the way from Tumbleton to Torrentpeak a rider from King’s Landing caught up and delivered joyous news. Queen Arianne was with child.

These news drove Aegon on. As no Ironborn host had materialized Aegon split his force, taking half towards Goldengrove personally and sending Ser Garlan towards Bitterbridge with the other half. Garlan arrived first and upon informing Lord Caswell about what was going on Lord Caswell bent the knee and fell in with the other Reachlord, joining Aegon's Campaign. Garlan sent a message to Aegon via both rider and raven declaring Bitterbridge subjugated and his intention to seize Longtable next. The messenger arrived just as Aegon was accepting Lord Rowan’s oath of fealty. Castle Goldengrove had initially resisted under the command of Mathis Rowans son but had yielded when the Rowan host arrived and dipped its banners before Aegon’s army. Mathis Rowan provided over three thousand men from his levy, which was more than ten times the casualties suffered so far. Lord Mathis remained at Goldengrove while Aegon marched towards Red Lake. Upon arriving at Red Lake Aegon received disturbing news. An Ironborn host had sailed up The Mander and taken Ser Garlan by surprise. The defeat was not catastrophic however and Ser Garlan had conducted a professional withdrawal North of The Mander. It was a stark reminder however that The Iron Fleet could not be discounted.

The yielding of Red Lake followed shortly. The lands had been plagued by disease and Lord Rycherd Crane had no will to continue fighting. Soon afterwards a messenger from Old Oak arrived. House Oakheart swore fealty but could sadly not come in person due to their lands also being ravaged by disease. Lord Olyvar Oakheart being bedridden and his family and household forbidden from leaving the castle. This left Aegon in control of most of The Reach North of The Mander and several lords South of The Mander still in open rebellion.

The Reach following “The Northern Campaign”
With the subjugation of the Northern Reach complete Aegon turned his army back towards Bitterbridge. Declaring his intent to smash the Ironborn host that drove off Ser Garlan. Aegon’s army linked up with Ser Garlands remaining forces near Dosk and started Marching East again. It was when camped at Bitterbridge, preparing for an advance down The Mander that Aegon received news that Queen Arianne had given birth to a beautiful baby girl. While the thought of not being there for his child’s birth gnawed at him the importance of securing The Reach, and the wellbeing of the his realm had to come first, he was sure of it. Arianne would surely forgive him, the realm must come first, always. Grand Maester Agrivane wrote that both mother and child were in good condition.

The next day Aegon’s army broke camp and began marching down the Roseroad, making straight for Highgarden. The royal army would encounter the Ironborn host as it was laying siege to Cider Hall. With the Ironborn all busy looking the wrong way they were caught off guard and spearheaded by the Golden Company veterans the royal army cut through the Ironborn host with surprising ease. Granted the Ironborn were outnumbered almost two to one but the casualty ratio after the battle was ten Ironborn for every one man of The Royal Army. Ser Garlan had every Ironborn man captured hung as pirates along The Mander. Shortly following this every noble house of the Iron Isles were declared outlaws, to be captured and hung as pirates. Those who surrendered would face trail for the same crime. Soon after the victory at Cider Hall the royal army resumed its march on Highgarden, meeting the remains of the Ironborn host two days march away. Despite timely reinforcements from The Iron Isles the Royal Army was victorious again. The Ironborn failing to find a defense against Ser Garlans heavy horse. Lord Jon Connington and Tymond Lannister would later arrive to mop up Ironborn stragglers before joining the siege lines around Highgarden.

Dragon eats Kraken

Ironborn sacking had done severe damage to the once magnificent castle. Its whitewashed walls were covered on soot and ash, its gardens and hedge mazes burnt, its towers bearing the scars of Ironborn siege weapons. The Castle’s great godswood with its three weirwood trees had been fully cut down to build more ships. With the outermost of its three walls breached and damaged in several places the Ironborn force left behind to defend it had fallen back to the second wall, the charred remnants of Highgardens great hedge maze still providing a reasonable hindrance for any attempt to scale the second wall with ladders or bring rams into place. Command of the siege was handed to Ser Garlan who knew the castle and all its weak points. With the arrival of Jon Connington and Tymond Lannister the besieging force numbered nearly eighty thousand men compared to the around five thousand defenders trapped in Highgarden. The Siege would last for nearly four moons before the second wall was breached under Ser Garlan’s relentless bombardment.

Ser Garlan himself led the vanguard through the breach and was the one to raise the Tyrell banner on Highgarden’s tallest tower, the entire Ironborn garrison was put to the sword and King Euron himself was dragged before Aegon and Garlan in chains. Garlan had the would-be-king hanged like a common criminal.

Justice

With the death of their king The Ironborn withdrew fully from The Reach. Ser Garlan would spend the following weeks recovering The Shield Isles, thus stomping out the last Ironborn remnants. Houses Chester, Grimm and Serry were restored to their respective lordships. House Hewett however was extinct in the male line and as such Aegon awarded Oakenshield to Ser Garlan with the eager approval of Lord Mace Tyrell. Additionally Willas Tyrell was made the new Master of Laws and would hold The Reach’s seat on the small council. The recovery of The Reach had taken just over a year and a half, having missed the birth of his first child king Aegon set a rapid pace home to Kings Landing.

hanged like a common criminal....

Euron Greyjoy got off lightly - hanging was too merciful.

If I had a dragon he would have been lunch. But at least he hanged like a common pirate rather than beheaded as a highborn noble.
Keep in mind, we are not done with the Iron Isles yet. Victarion sits the Seastone chair now.

I shall bend the knee to the one true king! (meaning subbed :D)

Rhaegar is one of my favorite characters in asoiaf.

Rhaegar was… interesting, but his obsession with the prophecy caused much greif. Hopefully Aegon can do better.

State of Westeros in 304 AC

ZPi1Hj1.png

The Iron Throne of Westeros

Current ruler: King Aegon VI Targaryen

Four years after landing in The Stormlands King Aegon holds sway over five of the original seven kingdoms. These four years had been years of warfare and strife following just after the War of the Five Kings. These years of warfare had left Westeros in a sorry state. With the fighting mostly over, for now, Aegon’s efforts to restore some semblance of normalcy to Westeros has begun to take shape. The recent addition of Willas Tyrell to the small council and the seemingly endless generosity of Illyrio Mopatis had already done much to restore the Crownlands. His marriage to Princess Arianne Martell has thus far resulted in a daughter namen Jaenara

The Stormlands

Current Lord: Jon Connington

With the end of the War of the Five Kings came also the end of Baratheon rule over the Stormlands. The once great noble house that had ruled the old lands of the Stormkings for three hundred years was no reduced to a bastard and a grey scale plagued girl. The castle of Storms End and overlordship of The Stormlands was taken over by Lord Jon Connington. He had quickly established himself as a harsh but fair ruler. Quickly winning the loyalty of many of the Stormlords. His marriage to Lady Margaery Tyrell has thus far resulted in a son named Armond.

Dorne

Current Prince: Doran Martell

Dorne stayed neutral during The War of the Five Kings, keeping its forces behind The Red Mountains. The death of Prince Oberyn at the hands of Ser Gregor Clegane only served to increase anti-Lannister sentiments and when Princess Arianne was sent to Storms End to meet with Aegon she reported back within weeks that Dorne should throw its support behind the supposed son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Elia Martell. Dornish forces were instrumental in securing The Crownlands against both the Lannisters and encroaching Ironborn. His marriage to Mellario of Norvos has resulted in three children named Arianne, Quentyn and Trystane.

The Reach

Current Lord: Mace Tyrell

The Reach suffered little during The war of the five kings, siding first with Renly Baratheon and then submitting before the Lannisters, offering Lady Margaery as Joffrey's Queen. With the death of King Joffrey the Tyrells eagerly suggested Margaery marry the boy king Tommen instead and their loyalty to the Lannisters remained. Following the Ironborn invasion of The Reach however Mace Tyrell pulled most his forces back to defend his home, something he was moderately successful in until Euron Greyjoy himself sailed right up the Mander and sacked Highgarden. House Tyrell fled and threw themselves at the mercy of king Aegon. Aegon accepted the Tyrell wovs as no Tyrell Soldier had actually been part of the Lannister forces who opposed Aegon's march on Kings Landing. The Reach was retaken and lord Mace restored to Highgarden. Lord Mace’s marriage to Alerie Hightower has resulted in four children named Willas, Garlan, Loras and Margaery.

The Westerlands

Current Lord: Tymond Lannister

A Lannister of Lannisport rather than Casterly Rock Tymond had been relegated to organizing the leftover levies while Lord Tywin and Ser Jamie fought The Young Wolf in The Riverlands. With the collapse of the Lannister war effort it was Tymond who surrendered Casterly Rock to Ser Laswell Peake of The Golden Company. Lord Tymond had been brought to Kings Landing and there he was confirmed as the new Lord of the Westerlands, much to his own surprise. Thus far he has proven himself an able commander, his army participating in the Siege of Highgarden and his fleet holding the Iron Fleet at bay of the Western coast.
His marriage to Lysa Marband has thus far resulted in four children named Alysanne, Martyn, Tytos and Rosamund.

The Riverlands

Current Lord: Edmure Tully

While house Tully’s demise seemed certain after king Robb was murdered at The Twins Aegon’s arrival in Westeros changed all that. Following the Lannister surrender lord Edmure and his wife were brought to Kings Landing while Aegon’s forces secured the Riverlands. Lord Baelish was nowhere to be found and Lancel Lannister surrendered Darry without resistance. Emon Frey was loath to give up Riverrun but in the end he was left no choice and fled in disgrace. Edmure Tully was confirmed as Lord of Riverrun. He would go on to unland House Frey in its entirety following a brief siege of The Twins in 303 AC, marking the definitive end of the Frey-Lannister alliance. House Frey would be scattered across Westeros appearing in the courts of various lords. His marriage to Roslin Frey has thus far resulted in three children named Jeyne, Marianne and Anwyn as well as an acknowledged bastard daughter named Sarra.

The Vale

Current Lord: Harrold Arryn

After the death of Robert Arryn in 302 AC the Vale of Arryn came under the rule of Harrold Arryn as a result of the scheming of Lord Baelish. The fall of House Lannister had thrown Baelish plans, whatever they were, into disarray. Having married Sansa Stark at Baelish initiative Lord Arryn now finds himself having blood ties to one of the seven kingdoms still remaining outside Aegon’s control. With Baelish removed the Lords Declarant agreed that Harrolds claim was the strongest and despite some initial grumbling they swore fealty. Harrold has proven himself to be up to the task, winning several skirmishes with the hill tribes and securing all major travelling routes in The Vale. His marriage to Sansa Stark has thus far resulted in one child named Darnold, he also has one bastard daughter named Alys.

The Iron Isles

Current King: Victarion Greyjoy

Balon Greyjoy declared his independence and attempted to invade The North in the absence of King Robb Stark. Seeing some success against the North his reavers soon found themselves hard pressed to hold anything of significance. Lord Roose Bolton brought much of the North under his own control following the Red Wedding and both him and King Stannis drove the Ironborn out of several captured Northern castles. The timely death of King Balon saw his brother Euron ascend to the throne. With lofty promises of power and wealth he launched an invasion of The Reach, even going as far as sacking Highgarden and taking it for his own, until Aegon and Ser Garlan Tyrell retook the castle and Ser Garlan had Euron hung on the banks of the Mander. Euron’s brother Victarion now rules the isles, recently returned from his failed expedition to Slaver’s Bay. He currently has no living children.

Kingdom of The North

Current King: Brandon XIII Stark

The Kingdom of The North was reborn when Robb Stark’s bannermen proclaimed him “King in the North” following the execution of Ned Stark shortly after the beginning of the conflict that would become the War of the Five Kings. Since then it had been a realm in turmoil. Invaded by Ironborn, having its King murdered, gone through a civil war between Stark and Bolton Loyalists and finally marching South again in King Stannis Ill-fated bid for The Iron Throne. Following Stannis defeat near Maidenpool the Northmen withdrew behind Moat Cailin, declared the oldest of King Robb’s brothers “King in the North” and sent a decree of their independence to King’s Landing. He currently has no children.

The Night's Watch

Current Lord Commander: Jon Snow

The bastard son of Eddard Stark continues to hold the wall as the 998th Lord Commander. After the army of the night king was crushed beneath the armored boots of The Golden Company the Wall has seen only minor skirmishes with remaining wildlings. Ranger traveling as far as the Thenn lands have reported no Wights or White Walkers anywhere. The Lord Commanders lenient stance towards the Freefolk have seen a decrease in conflict. However many believe the Wildlings to merely be biding their time until they can regain their strength.

In the future intermissions like this will be had each time a new king takes the throne but I figured it might be nice to have a little overview now that the major fighting has stopped.
Intermission format shamelessly borrowed from AxolotlKnight's "A History of the Iron Throne".
