Chapter 2: Military Affairs Continued
"Our War Ministry is currently funded quite adequately, I'm happy to report," stated Beck. "However, I am sad to say that our military is still weak compared to the rest of Europe, let alone the world. We desperately need more armed forces if we are to ever even adequately defend our dear Deutschland. Each branch's head will inform us of the situation. I have brought along several distinguished officers to help inform us on the problems of their units. Let's start with the Wehrmacht."
"Our army hasn't changed much since the last briefing, but I have reports on each division here with me today," said von Fritsch. "Our ten infantry divisions are currently have our most modern equipment. We still require more tanks and artillery however. Our 1st Armee, or our only Headquarters Unit, is stationed right here in Berlin. I have brought the commanding officer here."
"My name is General von Hammerstein-Equord K. I am currently the only active commanding general in the army. My unit commands and coordinates the entire East German border, from East Prussia, down to Breslau. Currently, our border is lightly defended, and Breslau, Oppeln, and Elbing not at all. I am particularly concerned about Oppeln, where much of East German industry is located, and Elbing, which is where we send supplies to East Prussia. In addition to the First Armee in Berlin, our only active Lieutenant General Hansen K. commands the Second Armeekorps with two divisions* in Stettin. The First Armeekorps is commanded by Major General Busch in Konigsberg. The Eighth Armeekorps is commanded by Mj. General von Kiesling auf Kieslingstein in Kustrin. Those are all the units in my area of command."
"The rest of the units report directly to the Wehrmacht Command, headed by me. Our Denmark border is completely undefended, and the other borders have only one division in the provinces that are occupied. The 4th Armeekorps in Dresden is commanded by Mj. General Hansen C. The 6th Armeekorps in Munster is commanded by Mj. General von Prittwitz und Gaffron. The 12th Armeekorps in Dortmund is commanded by Mj. General von dem Bach-Zelewski. The 9th Armeekorps in Frankfurt is commanded by Mj. General Bader. The 5th Armeekorps in Stuttgart is commanded by Mj. General Kasper. Finally, the 7th Armeekorps in Munich is commanded by Mj. General Franke. And that is the end of my report. "
"Kriegsmarine Grand Admiral Raeder reporting. Our navy has recently gotten several paint jobs, but that is it. The Navy is still severely short on combat ships, particularly cruisers and battleships. Also, our ships are hopelessly outdated and outclassed by the British and French navies. I have brought along Vice Admiral Saalwachter, commander of the Baltic Fleet, to give a briefing on our situation in the Baltic. I will follow him with the Atlantic report."
"Well, I am Saalwachter. The Baltic Fleet is stationed at Konigsberg and consists of the KMS Schleswig-Holstein, a battlecruiser, and two destroyer flotillas. The 1st Truppentransporter Fleet is docked at Rostock and consists of two transport flotillas and is headed by Rear Admiral Isendahl. Now, I will report on other countries' respective navies. The Lithuanians have a single transport flotilla for their navy. The Latvians have a single destroyer flotilla. The Swedish have almost as good a fleet as us, it have more heavy cruisers and almost as many smaller ships, as well as a battlecruiser. The Finnish navy consists of two heavy cruisers and a submarine wolfpack. The Soviet Leningrad fleet have an uncountable amount of submarines, a destroyer fleet, and two battleships. All of these fleets are more or less as outdated as ours, at least compared to the Allied fleets. That is my naval report."
"I currently command the Kreigsmarine fleet, which is docked at Wilhelmshafen, and currently consists of a heavy cruiser, the KMG Deutschland; two light cruisers, the KMS Koln and Emden; and a destroyer flotilla. The 1st Unterseeboots fleet, or submarines, are also docked at Wilhelmshafen and are commanded by Rear Admiral Wolf. It is our only submarine wolfpack. The British and French have untold legions of ships. The Norwegians have two heavy cruisers and submarine wolfpacks. The Danish have the same. The Dutch have a bunch of transports, destroyers, and submarines. The Belgians have a measly transport flotilla. That is the end of my naval report."
"Luftwaffe Air General Hermann Goering reporting. I still have only the Lufthansa civilian aircraft, no combat planes. It is kind of sad to see empty military hangers and runways. The Allies have air forces, so do the Soviets. I'm getting a bad back from being the lone pilot of the Lufthansa transport aircraft, bringing supplies to little children in Austria... That is the end of my report. Please make more planes, especially a special Cabinet aircraft with lush leather seats and a fur carpet for the Wiemar Republic. I want some comfort..."
*Note: From now on, unless specifically mentioned, all Armeekorps have only one division.
