After a nice, quiet winter, the year of our Lord 1500 actually started on April 1st, when our artisans became unhappy at the prospects of a prolonged war with Hungary, Austria, Bohemia, Wurtemberg, Lorraine and Bavaria; and no allies in sight. A decided one-half of our infrastructure investment was totally lost. It was a frustrating time for everyone.

But, as providence would have it, on the anniversary of my father’s birth, June 6th, that old scoundrel Ivan sent an emissary all the way from Moscow to invite us to his alliance with Venice, Ryazan, and Pskov. Such friendship and good fortune could not in good conscience be scoffed, and our Lord Protector responded in the affirmative without delay. His good spirits did not stop there, however, and despite my misgivings, on June 9th our Skargardsflotten of ~25 ships, both warships and transports, made its way to Kalmar Strait to load an army of 5,000 under General Dufwa for transport. The Lord Protector’s plan is to move through Hannover and Saxony and strike at the heart of Bohemia. It was an impulsive act, poorly planned and predestined to failure.

Dufwa did not arrive in the German Bight until September 21st, and although he wasted no time in getting moving, he insisted that the Skargardsflotten remain on patrol on the Bight instead of finding port. On October 6th, Saxony sued for peace with Austria, paying 118d for the privilege. On November 16th, Saxony paid for peace again, this time with Bavaria. By the time Dufwa managed to make his way to Hannover from Oldenburg on November 26th, the war was pretty much over, what with Saxony withdrawing early like they did, and he had no other choice but to start making his laborious way back to Sweden the following morning. I would recount the losses on this abortive attempt at a military venture, but my imbecilic secretary has managed to lose my notes as regards this period, and I must simply state that I remember that losses in warships from stormy weather was somewhere in the range of 3 to 5. I totally forget the loss of men that resulted from disease and hardship on the march and at sea, but I know it was not inconsiderable.

Imbecile! If you were not my own sister’s blood …

The entire year of 1501 was so uneventful that it almost eludes memory entire. Three changes only make the year even mentionable, and they were not insignificant in the least. The Svea Lifgarde saw a new leader in Bishop Hemming Gadh on the same day that Aleksander Jagiellonczyk became the new king of Poland-Lithuania, on January 1st. And then on November 16th, Hans was deposed, disgraced because of the debacle with Dufwa and his disastrous expedition. Sir Sten Sture Sjoblad, my friend and a true nobleman, was once again called upon to head our country.

January 7th, 1502 rolled around in the snow, allowing me the satisfaction of knowing that we had managed a royal marriage with Saxony (VP).

[OOC]-At the same time, the game indicates a FAILURE to keep Russia out of Scandinavia. Was it because of our alliance, or was there some province or provinces we were to take away from Russia to prevent that failure? That was a –33 in VP![/OOC]

Then in March of 1502 I realize the major achievement that has been made. My poor Sweden, home of all that is important to me, is truly a safe and stable country. (Stability +3!) It is on March 21st that we hear of the annexation of Holstein by Denmark.

Summer is warm and peaceful. The days are full of yellow sunshine and our people work hard as bees. The results of their labor are seen on October 1st, when we see a new quality gun become available for our proud navy. (Naval Tech 3 to Early Guns)

Sir Sjoblad, always looking to improve the lot of his country, helped to form a royal marriage with Cologne on Jan. 9th of 1503, still seeking allies for the necessity of war with our Danish neighbors, only to see his plans thrown awry on Feb.5th when Russia declares war against Kazan. I initially make the mistake of feeling sorry for the people of Kazan. Venice dishonors the alliance with Russia, which is to be expected of those people, living on the sea the way that they do. It is all so unnatural! Sir Sjoblad, caught by surprise, does little, but under pressure to bring Russian relations to a new high, personally helps to arrange a royal marriage with one of Ivan’s less hated nephews. All of which comes off quite elegantly on Aug.8th, 1503.

Our land tech improves to level 4 on Sept. 1st, when our army commanders learn the fine art of artillery support.

On November 1, 1503, Turkey, Hannover and Sweden have to sign a White Peace with Austria due to lack of interest in the war, and our inability to reach our enemies in a graceful and potent manner.

So it was in December when my good friend Sjoblad made his way to Jönköping. On the 14th, news arrived of his death. Saddened immensely, yet all too aware of my duties, I oversaw the investure of Svante Sture Natt och Dag as our new Regent. While his official election did not take place until January, the new Lord Protector was in place and performing his duties by Dec. 16th.

Svante Nilsson, as he was more commonly called, as his first official act gave his blessing upon the royal marriage compact with Austria, our former foes from our misadventure with the Turks, on January 3rd of 1504. On May 1st, he further received the benefit of my hard work with Sir Sjoblad, when diplomatic efforts with Geneva pay off in improved relations with that distant nation (+25). The man then proceeded to sit back upon his laurels.

In January of 1507, after having done little to nothing on his own, Svante receives a commendation for keeping Nyland within the borders of Sweden (+20 VP). Hmph! And then, of all things, the man is presented with a present of 400 ducats from his fellow nobles and the more prominent businessmen. A Gift of State, they called it! The gnome then proceeded to use their “gift” to begin promoting bailiffs around the region so that tax collection would proceed more efficiently. Served the group proper, I say! Svealand, Vastergotland, Gastrikland, and Nyland (ha!) all saw promotions that June. And then, the man proceeds to dilly-dally with affairs of court, paying little heed to anything else.

Those were dark years for me. I had little to do at all. The year 1510 saw the Regent develop and enthusiastic interest in the Navy, and 7 new ships were ordered. Delivery saw a large celebration on June 1st, where the braggart made a pompous speech regarding the great destiny of the Swedish peoples. I got drunk.

News reached me on the 1st of January 1512 of Martin Luther and his Reformation. Such caught my imagination as little had in years. Then, as if in answer to a prayer, I am ashamed to say, Svante returned to the Lord, and Sten Sture the Younger was elected as Lord Protector of Sweden, praise be the day! Little did I realize at the time just how much change was to come from that day.

Would that be change from your peaceful ways, or from your prosperous ways or otherwise?

So tune in, faithful believers, next week! Same bat-time, same bat-channel! :D

Year of our Lord, 1514

After only 9 months as Protector of the Realm, Sten Sture the Younger joined Russia, Ryazan Pskov and Denmark in war against the heathen Golden Horde. Together we helped coordinate the sending of 8,000 infantry, 1,000 cavalry, and 10 pieces of artillery to those distant lands. By the end of the year, the province of Samara was under siege by Nyland's Brigade, although their numbers had dwindled to only 7,000 infantry and the 10 pieces of artillery. No report on where the cavalry had disappeared to, but we speculate that the horses simply starved during the winter.

On Feb. 1st 1514, I was granted the rank of Viscount. Three days later, reports of our victory over a GH army attempting to lift the siege of Samara. Had it not been for the help of our Russian allies, our small brigade would have surely perished. By April 28th, a second GH army had been defeated.

On May 27th, not wishing to share the victory in Samara, our brigade shifted to Uralsk and initiated a siege there, only to see the war end on June 19th. Uralsk having held out past the peace, and being required to follow the lead of Russia, our forces withdraw from Uralsk and begin the long trek back home.

August 2nd - Sten Sture Nattoch Dag, simply known as Sten Sture the Younger, appoints Hjarne as minister. A promotion that I heartily endorse.

It is Feb. 15th, 1515 before our poor Nyland Brigade returns to Nyland. Only 2200 infantry make it back, although all 10 artillery pieces manage to be returned as well. We immediately order conscription to begin replacing losses in this once proud force.

We are not happy with the Russians, and vow our revenge upon them. We will remember our shabby treatment when all we wished was to help.

In 1516, I ordered promotion of a baliff in Savolaks.

Jan. 2, 1517 - Increased naval tech to Metal Cannon Balls

Feb. 1, 1517 - Trade Advance to Late Renaissance
Colonial Dynamism!!! 2 settlers, 1 Conquistador with 3,000 men and 3 warships in Finland!

To our utter amazement, we convince the English to share their explorations with us on Feb 7th. A whole new world opens up to us and we start preparations to send out our new explorers and colonists.

In May, our fleet embarks for Gulf of St. Lawrence, just as news reaches us of our acquisition of a monopoly in ISFAHAN. We are overjoyed at the news, although, to my shame, I confess I spent hours locating the place on a map. The rest of the year passes in relative quiet, broken only in October with news of pirates being sighted in the Lesser Antillas.

It really makes little difference to us or our plans.

Cool update;)

Nice that you have found America:D

No higher praise could I ask, especially coming from a "Lord" like myself (see above post concerning promotion to Viscount).

I have had very little success in getting other nations to agree to share explorations right up until this particular game. I could hardly contain my amazement at the English agreeing the very first time that I asked. Here I sat with newly acquired colonists and Conquistadors and nowhere to send them and I figured "What the hey! I'll just lose a diplomat if they refuse."

In fact, if I didn't perform my happy dance then, I will do it now ... ahhh, much better!

Actually, Exchanging Discoveries doesn't use up diplomats. In fact, if you really want to exchange, you can usually just sit there and click-enter-enter over and over again. The AI will get fed up with it eventually and exchange with you.

Awww, MAN! Another illusion ripped to shreds and stomped on. Must I go through life with all my happy dreams trampled on? :p :p :p

(*psst ... thanks, buddy*)

1518-

Well now. I suppose we must begin with the unfortunate news of the King's cousin, who, having been wed long and happily to the Grand Duke of Hannover for many years, 25 actually, fell off a river bank during a royal outing during the late winter floods and was swept away before anyone in the party could react. It was four days before her poor body was recovered. This unhappy event took place on the 2nd of Feb and draped a black veil upon the entire month. We discovered later that the 26th saw Sweden's first landfall upon the New World far to our West. Haster and his 984 men landed upon the land known as Anicouagan, but found the land harsh and inhospitable. While the King's court played with the new Arquebus weapons that the Royal Armory showed us on April 1st, Hastfer packed his men back aboard the ships and sent them south to Cheasapeake Bay where they unloaded on an island called Manhatten. However, his numbers were reduced to only 600 as some strange malady had inflicted his men suddenly in the trip south. Bad weather also caused its usual problems, including slowing their progress so much that it took from April 1st to June 23rd to travel from Anicouagan to Manhatten.

On July 2nd, word reached me of a trade embargo levied against us by the Spanish. Interesting that they should find us such a threat.

The Blue Squadron, having delivered Hastfer and his men to the New World, is lost at sea during the return voyage. The last anyone knew of them was when they departed Manhatten on July 2nd.

On Oct. 30th, our treasury exhausted, the King decides that a bank loan is needed to keep events moving forward. Also, the first set of colonists are sent to attempt to establish a trade post with the savages discovered to live in the area.

1519-

Word reached court that on Jan. 15th, Karl V of Austria was crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. We make note of this event. The King sends an ambassador to congratulate Karl, but does not attend the festivities himself. We are much too busy forming a reinforcement mission for Manhatten, and on May 22nd the White Squadron embarks for the island with 2,000 infantry, 1,000 cavalry and 10 artillery pieces to supplement Hastfer's depleted force before it is overwhelmed either by hostile natives or competition from some other European power.

On Aug. 18th, having learned that our attempt at a trading post has utterly failed, the last available colonists are shipped out to Manhatten. A second bank loan was taken out, since the ducats needed to fund the replacement army and the colonization attempts was simply not in the treasury.

1520-

Jakob Bagge, a seaman of much note, was promoted to Admiral on Jan. 1st. Oddly, General Gadh dies on the 5th, leaving a leadership chasm in our land forces. It is good that the Lord has seen fit to provide us with a time of peace, since our current leaders, other than Bagge, do not impress me at all.

Then, on Feb. 4th, it is announced that Sten Sture the Younger has stepped down as Sweden's Royal Regent and Kristian II is crowned as King. Our former regent takes the forced retirement with good grace. Our new King begins his reign by traveling immediately to Denmark to visit relatives. I begin making major decisions for Sweden's future.

March 23rd sees the White Squadron arriving at Cheasapeake Bay and Hastfer is reinforced.

Dissatisfied with the rate at which events are moving, I authorize a new loan (the 3rd) for the purposes of military purchases, promoting a baliff in Smaland and then proceeded to seal a Royal Marriage with Scotland. All this was accomplished by June 8th, followed on June 20th by the successful colonization of Manhatten with the last of our colonists. The White Squadron is lost off the stormy coast of Brittany on Oct. 1st during their return from the New World.

The rest of the year passes quickly as I continue with my plans for the coming year of 1521. I cannot abide the Danish usurper, nor his simpering underlings that now run our castrated military. Things will change next year, this I vow!

1521-

Having worked and schemed all winter, my efforts are rewarded with two new promotions effective on Jan. 1st, as Von Mehlen and Lars Eriksson become generals. They do not disappoint me, but begin immediately to restructure the army into something I believe that we could rely on should events turn against us.

After years of cultivating relations with Hannover, the ingrates agree to become vassels of England. Dispite my anger at the turn of events, I agree with the proposal to enter into a new Royal Marriage with the Tudors. I reason that the English cannot be held accountable for the stupidity of Hannover. Besides, they opened the New World to us, and that has to be worth something. The marriage takes place on July 29th and is quite elegant from all the reports that I hear.

On August 22nd, I personally make the announcement placing Gustav Vasa, a most industrious and organized man, as Monarch of Sweden. I take great delight in packing Kristian II back to Copenhagen. Only to hear a mere month later that the little scuttle marries a Russian princess, improving relations between those two nations in a most uncomfortable manner, for Sweden's sake that is. Vasa and I begin planning ways of improving our situation.

On Dec. 27th Hastfer discovers a land called the "Catskill" and is attacked by the local natives. The war there is intense by all accounts, but short in length of time.

1522-

By Jan. 6th, Hastfer puts down the natives in Catskill.

The very next day the royal court is blessed with another royal union, this time with the royal court of Saxony, whom we are now concentrating all our diplomatic skills upon. We see our relations move up from 156 to 172. Vasa is well pleased.

On Feb. 1st, Sweden's infrastructure improves to Late Renaissance (Level 4), allowing us to promote legal counsels to Chief Judges, assuming that we can afford their salaries. France also decides to repay some loans that we placed to their benefit some time back. Our treasury reports a balance of 217d.

On March 28th, Hastfer comes upon a land known as Sasquehanna, such names they have over there. Again, the man and his troops are set upon by savages who believe in attacking before speaking. By April 9th the natives there are either dead or sufficiently docile for Hastfer to be able to move on.

On June 22nd, we talk Saxony into exchanging discoveries, resulting in our relations improving even more. Sweden and Saxony are moving closer to that true Christian brotherhood that St. Paul speaks of so eloquently. (+187)

Aug. 8th sees an astonishing turn of events. Hastfer, who has been constantly on the move in the New World, reports the discovery of nations of some import. A new land he calls Tuscarora is found out, and native countries known as the Iroquis and the Mohawks make contact with the great General.

France contacts us again on Sept. 1st to repay all their loans. Our treasury now reports a balance of 233d, but our interest payments are starting to mount from our loans that we have taken out. I sorely wish we had more colonists to send out to the New World, but have no hope of any stepping forward right now.

Nov. 23rd sees Hastfer on the move again, discovering Powhaten and another group of hostile natives. He easily defeats them by Dec. 1st.

1523-

Still angered over the royal marriage between Denmark and Russia, Vasa insists that we leave our alliance with them. We send out the letters of our intentions on Jan. 19th, while announcing our new alliance with England and Scotland. We have great satisfaction upon reading the outraged responses from our former allies of Denmark, Russia, Ryazan and Pskov.

By March 5th, it seems prudent to take out loan #4 and build fortresses in Smaland, Vastorgotland, and Bergslagen.

April 27th finds our good Hastfer in Chesapeake, and with depleted forces of 360I, 592C, and 10Art, he heads back to the colony at Manhatten.

The end of June then sees our good General Hastfer back in our Manhatten colony without incident or attrition. While the Teutonic Order refuses to consider joining our alliance with England and Scotland, and relations with both them and the Danes is at an all-time low (-200), Russia shows signs of warming up to us (+53 & RM). Vasa sends orders to Hastfer to explore to his south. Together, we lament the good fortune that keeps our citizens happy and content and our colony in Manhatten small.

Aug. 22nd - Good Government Policies!
+1 Stability, 474d in trade & 474d in infrastructure.

Sept. 4th - Dynastic Inheritance!
Our good and loyal friend dies unexpectantly, leaving no heirs and Saxony is leaderless. Vasa, taking pity on the good people there, assumes the mantle and brings Saxony into Sweden, annexing them in whole.

On Dec. 1st, our first loan becomes due. We have to extend the loan.

1524-

So, on Jan. 1st instead of partying in the New Year, Vasa orders a new loan taken out so that we might send a 100d personal gift to the Tsar. (+154!)

By April, Hastfer has discovered both the provinces of Roanoke and Catawba without any of the hostilites that marked the other discoveries. He continues moving to the south. Vasa and I are both just as busy, as June sees Russia joining our alliance even as our relations with France seem to sour a bit. We appear to be headed toward bankruptcy as our finances show us losing about .3d per month. Our interest payments are up to 10.5d per month alone. The death of some obscure little duke in France breaks the RM where with we had any ties to that country, but at this point in time we are little concerned with the French.

On July 1st, His Majesty Vasa rewards me with a promotion, making me a Count. I am obviously overjoyed, and the rest of the summer passes very quickly during my family's move to the new estates provided by Vasa.

Hastfer discovers Santee quietly, and then heads back for Manhatten to wait out the winter.

On Sept. 1st we have to extend another loan.

By Oct. 1st, Sweden is bankrupt. Stability and the treasury are both at zero. We have 4 traders unable to go anywhere due to lack of funds and 6 diplomats cooling their heels around the palace. While I am personally despondant over the economy of the land, Vasa is unconcerned and blames me not at all. He is looking forward with optimism the coming years, claiming that Sweden's current financial woes are simply the stepping stone to becoming a financial giant.

Dec. 4th sees Hastfer return to Manhattan where he helps the colonists prepare for the winter after feasting in celebration on the bountiful harvest of the season.
:D :D :D :D :D :D

Well, you had bankruptcy coming to ya, taking out another loan to give someone a gift when you had one due. But hey, now at least you have nowhere to go but up!:D

OOC, I was aiming for bankruptcy.

But, as for actually writing the AAR, well my character can't very well claim to be FOR bankruptcy. Can he? Well, I suppose he could, but I'm not playing Russia and he ain't no Rasputin.:D:p
