Chapter 1

Chapter 1

September 15, 1066 to March 15, 1069
Otto of Niederbayern walked into his castle. He was to meet his council. His nephew Heinrich von Babenberg would be sent to Nurnberg to fabricate a claim. Otto had big plans and he did not wan to spend the rest of his life in a one demesne realm. Georg von Llandshut was on his way to train the local troops. Otto needed plenty of troops for the moment he would be making his move. His steward Christopher von Cham would be given the task to raise money for future constructions and purchases. Countess Haziga, Otto’s wife, was on her way to Oberbayern to set up his spy network. Otto was itching to get his family into the Holy Roman Empire’s political scheme of things to come. His final task was to send Bishop Adalbert of Regensburg to help the spread of cultural research within the county. But the last item on Otto’s mind was another family member. He and Haziga wanted another child, Otto is hoping for a daughter.

A mysterious stranger turned up at the castle one wintery day. His name was Dietwin von Regensburg, and he was home at last. Otto welcomed Dietwin into his study. Otto had a memory of his this gentleman from a time not far ago. “I have a job for you. You will be my new spymaster” "Thank you Mein Herr” Otto turned to his aide. “Recall my wife from Oberbayern at once” Otto sent Dietwin to set up a spy network in Nurnberg. Otto was itching to get his name out into the HRE. First he needed more troops. He summoned his Steward, Christopher to the castle. ‘Begin construction on the wooden palisades, I need more men for our army”. Haziga returned to the castle in late October 1067. She wanted to share her ambition with her husband Otto. “Dear, lets plan for a daughter” “We will after I get back from training troops in Oberbayern”. Haziga was concerned that Kuno, Otto’s half-brother had not found a lady to settle down with. She would confer with Otto to find a suitable mate. She sent out introduction letters throughout the HRE and finally the right one came back in early Match 1068. Margit Guthkeled would be right fit for Kuno. She awaited the response from Count Keled of Bacs.

The bad news arrived back at the castle. Otto’s spymaster died, he needed to find another. Otto chose Kuno, his half-brother and sent him off to rebuild the spy network in Oberbayern. On November 6th, 1068, Otto and Haziga welcomed a son into the world and named him Siegfreid. The family now had five boys. Otto’s next ambition was to increase the size of his realm. But first he was invited to Duke Otto of Bavaria’s feast. The feast was fun and there was a duel. We will be back next time.

1069duel.jpg

They entered the cemetery. Haziga was leading the boys to pay their respects for their late father, Otto. Otto had died suddenly. Later that day, Otto’s oldest son Ekkehard would now lead the House of Wittelsbach. The future of the Wittelsbach name was on Ekkehard's hands now.

Chapter 2
March 15, 1069 to April 1088

Circa 1082
1082ekkehard.jpg

One day Marshall Georg told Ekkehard about an idea to improve the military of Niederbayern. Ekkehard let him proceed. A few months later Ekkehard's guardian Haziga (Otto's wife) dies. Ekkehard goes into a short period of mourning but will come out and be invited to feast in December 1070 by Duke Otto. Later in the early part of 1071 Ekkehard will graduate to adulthood and will be known as a gruff diplomat. this was the time to get married, something he always wanted to do since his early teens. Judith d’Avranches from duchy of Apulia (Roger d’Hauteville)was chosen. She would inform Ekkehard that she wanted to have a son as soon as possible. The military was given a chance to perform in the Carinthian-Lombardian Ducal War over Padau in late 1071. Ekkehard would get to lead an army of the great Duke Otto of Bavaria into battle. The first child of the family was born on April 6, 1072 and was named Berchte. With one child already, Judith told Ekkehard she wanted five kids. Duke Otto invited Ekkehard to his first grand tournament in 1073. Ekkehard was concerned about the money situation in the county and sent his steward to collect taxes. In late September 1073 in the county of Nurnberg, Ekkehard's chancellor was able to fabricate a claim.More happiness came to the family when Thomas was born on November 15, 1073. With the claim on Nurnberg, Ekkehard was longing for a demesne of two. Ekkehard sent Heinrich, the chancellor to Oberbayern to fabricate a claim for later. But before that could come to fruition, he died and was replaced by Otto. Otto was then sent to Salzburg to fabricate a claim. The year of 1074 was the year of war. Our liege, Otto of Bavaria. was crowned Kaiser of the HRE. Ekkehard was chosen to lead in the numerous wars in October. A Holy War of Capau gave the troops some experience. Heinrich was selected as the new spymaster after a selection process.

Ekkehard decided to press the claim for Nurnberg in September 1076. The short war was considered a rehearsal for things to come much later. Both sides had roughly the same troops, but Niederbayren had a slight edge in troops. After victories over the enemy, the troops did not have the resources for a prolonged siege. After a white peace, which Ekkehard lost prestige, the troops were sent back to train and built up the army for the next military action. But the short war was not without the causalties, Ekkehard was maimed in 1078.
1073nurnbergclaim.jpg

Construction was started on August 22, 1079 for a military training grounds. It was completed in April 1080. Heinrich uncovered a plot of a local noble and was given 50 to stay quiet. Tragedy would come back to the House of Wittelsbach on June 7, 1080. Thomas would die at the age of 7. But that was overshadowed by another birth, Deitrich was born on June 15, 1080. Ekkehard appointed a new members of his council. A spymaster in 1081 by the name of Friedrich. And a new steward by the name of Bernard in 1082.

A local priest accuses some local villagers of blasphemy.
1081priest.jpg

Construction was finished in later 1082, the castle's wooden palisade was upgraded to a low stone wall. More joy was delivered to the family as Nancy was born on May 20, 1082. Ekkehard's chancellor was sent to Passau to fabricate a claim after a claim was made on the county of Salzburg. Heinrich was promoted to the position of chancellor in 1084. More conflicts in 1082 as many entities declared independence from the HRE. On September 21, 1086 Bohemia had declared independence and won.

Ekkard summoned his marshal and counselor into his study, he would press the claim on Salzburg.
1082slzburg.jpg

After a very short conflict, Prince-Bishop Welf was captured in battle and the war was over just like that in March 6, 1087..

1087warend2.jpg

Life was returning to normal after conflicts and the HRE getting back to business. First order of business was the successor of Kaiser Otto of Bavaria. Otto died on September 11, 1086 and was replaced by Kuno III. But turmoil will return as Friedrich von Regensberg, the spymaster for Ekkehard, died in March 1088. An investigation would be forthcoming.

Chapter 3
April 1088 to April 15, 1115

The House of Wittlesbach continued to expand and prosper. Berg Wittlesbach began construction on a castle village in 1088 that was finished in October 1089. During this time Berchte came of age and was married to Duke Leopold I of Meissan. A daughter, Emma, was born on August 2, 1089. But one of the children, Deitrich, passed away on December 21, 1088, he was only 8. A dragon was rumored to have been sighted within the Niederbayern area. The Wittlesbach dynasty suffers a setback when Count Ekkehard died on April 5, 1092. His successor was Herbert I.

The liege, Kaiser Otto, of the HRE, granted Herbert the Duchy of Bavaria, for the recognition of service and the nobility of spirit in November 1094. Herbert was appointed as Steward for HRE in September 1102. The county of Oberbayern was granted to Herbert in February 1107. And Barony of Ebersberg March 1108. Kaiser Otto will die in February 1115 and Herbert will be thrust into the HRE spotlight at one of the inheritors.

Duke Herbert I continued to lead House Wittlesbach. His work has not gone unnoticed. Herbert has been busy upgrading his holdings, leading the Bavarian Army in various conflicts within the HRE, and even took part in a crusade to Alexandria. For Herbert’s continued service to Kaiser Otto of HRE, he was awarded the Kingdom of Bohemia in 1127.

The current laws of Bohemia. Herbert will be thinking about changes once he has ruled for 10 years. He has some adjustments to take into account. :p

Here is a current map of Europe circa 1131

The House of Wittlesbach has increased in size through pressed claim. The latest was Innsbruck in 1115. Herbert has claims in other parts of HRE. He is waiting for the right time to strike.

King Herbert passes away on March 10, 1145. He will be succeeded by Arnold I. The royal switch over from one ruler to another did not go off without a hitch as Prince Otto will try to take the throne in 1147.

King Arnold will not see a smooth personal transition as Queen Consort Edit will die on November 24, 1150. The King will marry Ida von Zahringen on November 1150. They will produce a child by the name of Konstanza in 1154.

Queen Consort Ida

The Kingdom of Bohemia has the law of succession of Seniority. King Arnold weeded out an unsuitable heir to put his son; Otto will be the primary heir.

Within the realm of HRE there will be turmoil as Kaiser Otto will pass on in 1140 and will be succeeded by his son Michael I. Herbert’s wife Emma will go to war for the HRE crown and will win. Bohemia will aid in the war.
