"The Royal Backstab"

This is the AAR for a completed multiplayer game, featuring;
  • Jake - Germany
  • Crilloan - Italy
  • Kingarnasking - United Kingdom
  • Hebos - CCCP

We play the 1938 campaign (HOI2 v1.2), with the intention to play historical. However, our first session turned the game into full-blown chaos, a tad unhistoric you might say :)

Mods:
  • Heavily reduced ranges for naval bombers.
  • MP-bug fix value: 0.36

House Rules (subjected to modifications as the game progress):

We build our game on trust and respect for each other.
We don't take advantage of exploits.
When in doubt, we ask around before execution.

  • CCCP may not DOW Axis before may 1940, unless either Germany refuse to offer Molotov-Rippentrop (full pact) or Poland is annected by Germany prematurely.
  • At any time, no more than 12 submarine flotillas in a given seaprovince.
  • No military control of US or Japan
  • You may not SR to or from a province in contact with enemy province.
  • You may not cancel starting trading deals.
  • You can only liberate nations, if you own the territory being liberated (mainly to prevent GER from liberating flanders and russian minors, thus not running into TC problems)

The idea is that each player post a brief AAR of the last session. Hopefully we can post screenshots.

Sessions:
  1. 2 June 05: 1 Sept 1938 - 11 May 1939
  2. 5 June 05: 11 May 1939 - 1 October 1940
  3. 9 June 05: 1 October 1940 - 12 Feb 1941 (no AAR, to short session)
  4. 12 June 05: 12 Feb 1941 - 4 December 1941 End of game.

"A room with a view" - CCCP AAR session 1

1 September 1938

The workers paradis is in disarray and on the verge of civil war. Only the might of the Red Army keeps the people at bay. All domestic tretcherous elements have been taken care of, and the Soviet Union is slowly regaining power. Soon we will be able to spread the word. Soon we will expand the realms of communism. Soon we will be all-powerful. Soon.

14 March 1939

Czechoslovakia is no more. The country is partioned between Germany and Hungary. Our intelligence suggests a staged coup influenced by the sneaky Germans. Germany and Italy have formed an official alliance. Worrying.

25 March 1939

Italy DOW Albania. The small country is quickly annected by Italy.

30 March 1939

Poland joins the alliance of CW and France.

1 April 1939

UK declares war on Italy !!!

uk_dow.jpg

World in flames

diplo_1april.jpg

15 April 1939

UK invades Rostock. Bold move, can end in total victory or utter disaster.

uk_rostock.jpg

10 May 1939

Situation at end of session. UK have attemted to put an early end to Axis aggression, but it looks bleak for the honorable (?) Allies. What are the plans of CCCP? Will France strike back at the Italians?

It appears that your British friend forgot about the straits ;)

I'd say that their best bet could have been a more, ehh, active policy of preserving the neutrality of European states - I am sure that the Dutch would not - or, at least, could not - object to multiple corps-sized landings all along their coastline. Following a quick disarmament operation, the British could easily advance straight into the Ruhr ;)

I hope this AAR continues. :) So many of these seem to end prematurely.

"the huge surpice"

The spring of 1939 had arrived and the German high command were making plans for an blitz attack at the Polish nation later that summer. The bulk of the German army were positioned along the Polish border and the entire fleet stationed in Rostock.

The declaration of war by the allied at April 1.st came as total surprise for the GHC. The fact that Poland had joined the allies and that the Brits had military control over their armies had escaped the German intelligence. Many armies had left the polish front line and were halfway to France when it dawned on GHC that Poland also were the enemy. Now confusion struck with armies running all over constantly assigned to new tasks

- We need to take Denmark now! Guderian barked. We can't afford to have British forces disembark at the unguarded shore of the Baltic sea. War was declared and two armor divisions were assigned to capture Kolding in the false belief that this maneuver would deny entrance to the Baltic see for the Royal navy.

A few days later, five British divisions disembarked in Rostock and the entire German navy was forced out to face the awaiting British home fleet. Nothing stood between the five British divisions and Berlin. Germany were in trouble

However, the good advance of the Italians in south France eased the pressure on Freiburg and Stuttgart and all fast German units were rushed north to fight the Brits. Enough units were gathered in time to refrain the Brits from going south from Rostock and soon the town were back under German control. Denmark were seized and finally the Baltic see were cut off. But the entire German navy were sunk save a light cruiser and two submarines. The narrow waters of Stora Bält and Pomeranian bay allowed the German navy to get in close and many British vessels also went down. At the end of the session the Polish front were stable and GHC has to decide were to put the main effort next.

Soviet has canceled the non aggression pact with Germany and the big question is, what are they up to? Will they stand by and watch as Europe goes down in fire?
The last word has not been spoken.... ;)

Roma Victor

Roma Victor !!
...or something like it...

A short background on the players might be in order to explain some of the events in the coming storm.

Hebos is the veteran HOI,EU, Vicky and HOI2 player. the evil genius who now has taken control of
the red plague usually plays on VH/A and does it with a flair.

Jake normally sees the action in WW2 from his cockpit in WW2 online, avid gamer who, as hebos, usually plays on hard difficulty levels without breaking a sweat. His experience with paradox games are mostly concentrated to HOI. Before we started this campaign he adamantly refused to play Britain.

HJ is an experienced gamer both from a tabletop perspective, with titles as world in flames under
his belt and PC games such as HOI, EU, C&C Generals. Normally a mild mannered gentleman he gets
mean when playing wargames :)

Crilloan, well, thats me. I am an rpg and wisky freak and once belonged to the society of restarters anonymous during my time with BG2. My experience with paradox games are EU2 and recently

HOI2. Hebos and jake tried desperately to wake my interest in HOI; i bought it, installed it, and got scared shitless when I saw the complexity of the game. Didnt play that one. I am a 'builder' in strategy game terms and usually panic when the fighting starts. Meaning that i grab the troops I can find and throw them at the nearest frontier in a large stack, hoping that the gods will smile upon me, or at least not crush me outright. I usually get my a$$ handed to me on normal/normal.

screenshots will be provided when i figure out how to take them.

Dawning of an new era, the return of the roman empire.

As I write down these worlds of epic endeavour, like herodotos before me I send a thought to Epikuros and Luccullus and sip on my tea and nibble on a cinnamon bun. Tea, One of the cultural blessings the english have spread. When their rotten empire falls I will have a word with mussolini to send me some of the sacked goods.

As of september 1938 I serve as the advisor to Mussolini and the aging king of italy. did I say serve? I serve my own means. When Pax Romana is achieved I will install myself as the First emperor of the reborn roman empire.

The state of our fledgling empire is sorry to say the least. Our military is by now means sharp as the gladius of past, but I will reshape our military into modern legions and give them pride and strenght.

But we can not do this alone.
The debacle of teutoburger forrest is long forgotten, but strenght has awoken among their heirs.

Let us harness their strenght and skill to elevate ourselfs to new glory.

September -38 to april -39
Africa, what to do with former abbesinia and ancient carthago?
Our African holdings will be hard to defend, There is a coming storm, war will bury the old and give way to new powers. Germany have grown in strenght and I ponder if I should join the axis of steel. It would give us large benefits for our research, for as all people now, we romans are
builders and engineers, not inventors. (and sorry to say, most of the time befuddled with chianti).
On the other hand it would open up our front to both france, those lazy gallic frogeaters, and to the Old Empire in africa.

We wait and liberate ourselfs from the burden of taking care of somalia in sept. 24
Our resource situation is dire.
December 19 th. we ally ourselfs with the third reich. Alea acta est.
Our research is greatly improved by this move, I have concerns about my african belongings. our naval presence in the mediteranean theater is no match for the british should we clash now.

As I allow myself the luxury of a pils urquell I give an advice that could spell the doom for our alliance. I want more beer and germanany happily obliges with partitioning czeckoslovakia with hungary. this decisicion affects the mob in brittain. In the end of march we crush king Zog of albania. I need more resources!! We live and die with the
material we hope to liberate from Albania.
As I greedily orders the stockpiles from Albania home to rome I realize I have made an ominous mistake. I am no Belisaurius. The Old Empire have had diplomatic negotiations with Zog and granted
them their independence.

WHY?? Why now?? Cant the brittish empire just sink back in to the annals of history and quietly dissappear??

First of April...
Time seems to stand still. A conference is held between the old empire and the red Tzar.
On the first of april Great Brittain declares war on us and all off their alliance follows.
An outcry is heard from our brothers in the north who have been massing troops by the polish border. the siegfrid line is under a short attac.
All of a sudden armored troops cross the border to our Abbesinian holdings. We have only militia
there, militia that I was about to disband and give up the territory.

Alea acta est !!

We have not choosen the moment, we are weak and underdefended but we shall prevail.
Germany is in deep trouble, polish troops crosses the border, a british, daring attac captures rostock. Germany is far from the strenght is should have been in.

Italy stands alone at the moment,Germany have failed to get help from franco or possible partners in the east. we can not count on the strenght of the troops from wermacht.
We are alone.

Let us cross rubicon and show that the spririt of the legions are still inside us!

In northern africa we make a bold push and finally reach el Alamein. Several battles follow but we do not manage to get farther. Libya and africa, were carthago once stood, will we be able to anounce roma victor or should we leave africa for now, as I once had planned?

Pure anger drives our troops in to gallia, we reach as far as tolouse with several victorius battles before we have our first defeat at vichy and we slowly have to start to retreat. We will fight for every village and province. Without german help we will surely face a rain of blood and steel in france.

On the good side, our roman sailors have fought well, only the light cruiser Luigi Cadorna have sofar been sunk. But we expect more losses in the naval war to come.

And what about the Red Tzar, When will the red hordes come screaming in from the east?

Crilloan

An interesting side note is that the four German battle cruisers Sharnhorst, Schlesien, Gneisenau and Schleswig-Holstein did very well in the waters of Öresund - Stora bält. They sunk 28 British vessels including 5 battleships, 3 heavy cruisers and a Carrier.
HMS Queen Elizabeth was the bane of Scharnhorst and Schleswig-Holstein. A group of Swordfish torpedo bombers finally struck home at Gneisenau, sending her to the bottom in a blase of fire. Those bombers originated from HMS Argus.
KMS Schlesien escaped to Königsberg together with seven other badly damaged vessels. But as Königsberg was overrun by the polish army they were all forced out of the harbor. Outside waited a French fleet and what was left of KMS Schlesien was promptly sent to the bottom by the battle cruiser Dunkerque.

Hehe, patience my friend, we have just started ;)

I would like to thank all "non-playing" posters of this thread. It is extremely fun to see comments on our game, as that makes it the more fun to continue the game.

As Henry v. Keiper so wisely spoke, not too many MP AAR have been finished if any, and to see that someone actually takes interest in our humble play is truly inspiring.

We play as we have time and lust. Hopefully we can keep playing a session a week.

Now we await the first session's AAR of UK ;)

Aggro Chamberlain

Hi all
I play as Britain. I myself have a broad gaming interest ranging from most Paradox products, RTS games such as Rise of Nations, C&C Generals and turn based titles such as CIV, MOO2 :) etc. Furthermore i play board/wargames such as Wif, A3R, ASL and several Eurogames, chess etc. Settings include Historical, Fantasy, SF, anything. You name it, I play it. I hate Roborally though :)

Here's an old AAR from EU1 that I took part in: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9853

I have, however, not that many hours on hoi2 and a very limited MP experience of the game.

My initial plan in was to just get a conservative start, like I usually do, and see what opportunities the game gives me. Personally, I'm not sure I like the houserule regarding decreased NAV range, even though Britain has the most to gain from this. Last game I played as Italy and my feeling was that those NAVs on Sardinia was spending most of their time on the ground tring to regain ORG. Long range fighters should be the natural response to a NAV strat.

However, back to the game.

Early on I guaranteed Yugoslavia and Albania from an advice from Hebos. I deployed my mobile ground forces in Egypt. Assuming control of the French forces I set up a fairly conventional French defence bringing home divs from Africa to France and making 3 armoured corps w 2 MOTs and 1 ARM each. I also deployed 5 british divs including the HQ in the north of France. I always like a strong BEF forcing Germany to play his best to take France.

Germany and Italy allied early on, likely to exchange blueprints. I pushed the Inteventionism slider one step to the left. Then I realised that after Albania was attacked following Zog's refusal, both Germany and Italy was above the Belligerence levels needed for a DoW. Having discussed the matter w Hebos, I decided to declare war, even though I usually prefer not to declare war due to the political effects. I also declare prematurally, because the French unit were still in a defensive position when I declared. Big mistake there. Poland was also in the alliance and joined the attack.

Due to the fact that all units were in defensive positions at the moment of attack, there wasn't much of a surprise effect initially. I discovered the hard way that the French units ordered to attack into Germany broke off the attacks by the ai automatically. I hadn't counted on that. The German west front garrison initially was weak. I charged w some 10 INF divs against 1? div but the ai broke off immediately.

In Africa the armor went into Ethiopia while I set up defensively in Alamein.

Naval scouting in the southern Baltic revealed that Rostock was undefended and seemed to be the only populated German port. I sent Home fleet to the sea outside and jumped ashore with the BEF units from northern France. A ferocious naval battle ensued but the Germans gave at least as good as they got. Some 10 ships were sunk on both sides and the German survivors fled to Danzig. What to do now with 4 INF divs+1 HQ in Rostock? 2nd big mistake now as I neither pushed for Berlin nor evacuated to fight another day. Instead I just dug in, hoping to confuse the German in having to deal w 3 fronts. Soon armor surrounded Rostock while Germany DoW:ed Denmark and, IIRC, I transported 2 infs and the HQ to Copenhagen in order to make a last stand here together w the Danes. These units were no match for the veteran German troops and all British troops finally surrendered at Odense w nowhere to run. All in all, just a big screw-up. I should have pushed for Berlin or bailed out early on having completed the mission of dislodging the fleet.

The Poles however got some time to stabilize their front and once again dislodged the German fleet into combat w Home fleet. By this time, I was feeling the straits closing so I sent in a disposable French fleet and got out w the now much decimated Home fleet. Just in time. The remains of the German fleet was dislodged a third time from an abandoned Königsberg and all but destroyed by the French. Some 10 French ships are now trapped in the Baltic. All in all, the British had something of a 2:1-3:1 loss ratio in the fleet battles but it's still worth it. The German fleet is gone. I should have put in the French earlier on though.

No progress at all in attacking out of Maginot, I discovered to my horror that Italy was making progress in the south of France. I sent all my armoured corps there and for now I feel the situation is fairly stable.

To sum up day 1, I feel that I have made quite a number of big mistakes. I'm still learning this game though. I wouldn't have attacked with the Allies if I knew that the ai would cancel my attacks. Nothing disastrous so far but I have to improve my play in the future. Looking forward to the next session.

Interesting to see all is possible in this game... :) Reading MP AARs is so much more interesting than reading normal single player AARs because it gives a very good insight into the game.

Keep it up! And that was a very cool move against the German fleet. Something the AI doesn't do... Should I ever buy this game, it will remind me to garrison the ports for my fleet with ground troops, too.

We all made mistakes. Even I, as a bystander to the war so far, made the mistake to cancel the non-aggression with Germany. I had no reason to so, except by making Germany a tad nervous, since I couldn't attack Germany right away. The cancelation caused me a 5% dissent hit. :(

I must take on some responsibility of UK's actions. Before the session started I was convinced that Italy would attack Yugoslavia in 38'. I knew that such actions would give UK the possibility to DOW Italy. I pep-talked UK into doing just that if the situation would occur, but Kingarnasking were sceptical.

After Poland joined the Allied we realized that UK could DOW Italy anyway. We had a long talk weather UK should go through with the plan, and I thought Kingarnasking's idea were brilliant. After all, if Polen would fall, there would be no Molotov-Rippentrop, giving me the chance to DOW Germany in early 39'.

I still believe the UK DOW can prove to be a brilliant move. Even if France would fall prematurely, it can bring the US into the war earlier. It's going to be interesting to see what will happen.

Indeed, we all make mistakes at first. I didn't realize there was a type of "BB" rating when I first played EUII. :D As you can imagine, it was a bit of a suprirse when half of Europe suddenly came knocking on my door...

"All is quiet on the Eastern front"
CCCP AAR session 2

11 May 1939

War is raging in both Europe and Asia. Italy have pushed deep into France, and Germany have annex Denmark. Polen is still standing. Japan have made some progress in their war against China. What will happen next?

Battle of France

Germany choose to take out France before Polen. The joint-operation of Germany-Italy swiftly brings France to its knees. Italy continue their advance up towards Paris, and Germany take the historic path through Bastogne by DOW on Belgium. The French faces a futile situation. All they can do is stalling the Axis.

Axis surround the Maginot line at end of June. In July Italy trusts into Paris but are kicked out. The French capital is exposed to heavy fighting and the control goes back and forth. In mid-August, the Axis finally seizes the town and wraps up the rest of France.

CCCP + Germany = Friends (for now)

In August 39' Germany propose a secret pact, the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. As France is lost, a war with the Nazis would be unwise. We reluctantly sign the deal. We need more time to build our forces.

Baltic annexation

We now use the might of the Red Army to scare the Baltic countries into submission. Latvia caves in Sept 26 and cede Riga, Gulbene, Dagaupulis, Jekapils, Jelgava and Mazirbe to the Red Empire. On 7:00 October 18, 1939, Estonia accept our demands and cede Voru, Tartu, Tallinn, Pärnu and Narva. As the last country, Lithuania holds out to February 20 until they finally accept the facts; we want their territory and there is nothing they can do about it.

Ah, I'm starting to like this war-business. I want more.

Finnish winter war, or the lack of it

I, Stalin, have decided that something must be done about the Finnish border. We must protect the flank of Leningrad. Molotov have conferred with the Finnish diplomats, trying to hire the province of Viipuri for the next 30 years. Stubbornly the Finns have refused to agree on any deal. We must now teach the Finns a lesson with brute force.

I have assigned General Zhukov, to come up with a plan to defeat Finland.

Operation Без перевода - "Mercurius" (by Gen. Zhukov)

pre_winterwar_front_3.jpg

For this task STAVKA have provided me with 5 infantry armies, 4 tank corps, 2 mountaineer corps and the Leningrad military district HQ. The idea is to use; 2.Armiya, 11.Armiya and the 1-oe, 2-oe, 3-ee and 4-oe Tankovaya Korpus to break through the Finnish defence at Viipuri. The momentum gained will be used to push all motorized units towards Helsinki.

In the meantime, the Red Banner Baltic Fleet will set sail (well, not literally, our fleet ain't that obsolete) to Gulf of Bothnia. At arrival they will launch a seaborne invasion of Vaasa.

cccp_fleet.jpg

Finally, I Zhukov will lead the 4.Tankovaya Korpus into Turku. This will bring the Finns to their knees, begging for a peace deal. The whole operation should take less than 2 weeks.

pre_winterwar_zhukov.jpg

However, due to the fact that Polen was still standing in Feb 40'. I have decided to cancel Operation Mercurius. We will fight another day. (Polen have to fall before Feb 40' if Winter war event is to fire). It is a setback for the Red Army, we would have needed the important combat experience.

End of session - 1 Okt 1940

To summarize the standings so far:

Germany's fleet is obliterated. Italy still posses 2 battleships, but that's basically all they got. The Allies have total control of the sea. I wonder how Germany's Norwegian Exp force are getting home ;)
1okt_naval.jpg

Interestingly Germany have the largest and most effective army. With 40 mobile divisions they can cause havoc to our supply lines. I'm worried. The fierce fighting in the Mediterranean have caused sever looses to both the Italian and UK player.
1okt_army.jpg

The Mediterranean front.
1okt_medi_front.jpg

The Scandinavian front.

Japan is doing extremely well against China. Stalin is even more worried.

The horror, the horror, the horror

As you may have noticed from previous inistallment in the historical series concerning Roma Victor, the new empire under caesar Crilloan, the axis of steel failed to set the timetable for the war.

The nefariuos move by the brittish and the commonwelth to declare war in april 1939 put germany in a very dangerous situation. Italy had counted on the muscles of the wehrmacht to lend a helping hand in the goal of re-establishing the new empire. If germany would be backstabbed and fail to get the initiative back ASAP Italys plans would surely crumble.

Against this backdrop, the plans for evacuation of the nortafrican holdiings had to be put on hold. It was very uncertain if italy could hold the gained ground for some longer time. The italian forces were hard pressed to match the brittish corps in equipment and supply. Courage and heroics can only take you thus far.

In the spring of 1939 the Legions of Rome exploded into action, well aware of that it would in the end be mostly a delaying action. For a short moment in time the legions held Paris in the lands of the gauls to the nortwest and Suez and el Alamein in the southeast.

In the beginning of the gallic campaign several heavy counterattacs were launched by the frensh forces, masterminded by their superiors from Agincourt.

failure to defend the beaches led to the burning of firenze

bild 1
bild1.jpg

Industries were razed to the ground and important research were lost.

The legions vere infuriated at the disaster and orders were to press on hard inte france, conterattacs vere encountered but crushed without remorse.

A conference were held with german HC and italian troops managed to capture Dijon and fiurther north. By this manouver the maginot line could be severed from the rest of the french forces.

Bild 2
bild2.jpg

Finally came the momoent, the breaking of paris !

bild 3
bild3.jpg

A glorious map!

bild 4
bild4.jpg

Meanwhile in north africa and middle east.

After hard clashes with iraqi troops in El Alamein, ( the british, as habit is, used colonial forces to to most of their dying it was decided to open up yet another front. A beachhead was opened in haifa, time was short since it is only a matter of time until the brittish would sail down with the entire fleet. With the kriegsmaring destroyed.

several naval battles occured and the italian managed to hold for yet a little while.

bild 5
bild5.jpg

History will never be fully able to tell about the horrors at el alamein and the battles occuring along the north african sea provinces.
Final push at El Alamein

every italian players dream

THE SEASON OF THE WOUNDING

In the end, when brittains larger fleet came calling. the situation were impossible to hold. the heavier and better brittish armored corps were hard to figh against for the brave italian troops. The war effort were also undermined by dire resource situation. On several occations in the african campaign the few and weak mobil forces of italy were standing still due to lack of fuel. there were no oil at all left in the frenzy that war is.

In a desperate move it was ordered to try to salvage aand save as many of the troops from libya as possible. entire corps and armys were killed in the blistering heat, with no water or supply, or caprured by the allied forces.

In a grace given from the God of war, Mars granted the safe passage home of the two roman armored corps. the loss of those would have been insurmountable.

For that we have to thank the Roma marina. they gave their lives to save the key components of our war effort.
In the end, the italian marine had sunk 75 ships before dying to save others.

to compensate and strenghten morale it was decided to conquer Yugoslavia, the campaign is not worth mentioning. The remaing legions wanted to prove themselfs after the disaster in libya and it was a very quick affair.

We will regroup in hell and come back !

The suffering was not over yet. While the decimated roman army was spread very thin (at the most down to 29 div from 57 in the beginning) the Brittish led a landing in the southern parts of italy. The defensive troops could not match the experienced brittish corps.

bild9.jpg

After a desperate cry for help to our allied in the north, germany, well avare of the debt they had to italy from the first months of the war, sent down one of their finest Armees, 8 divisions or panzer with General Rommel leading them. Rommels panzercorps togheter with the quickly redeployed roman troops drove the british out into the sea.

As the situation stands in october 1940, rome is wounded but far from down. Losses have been severe, but the british have lost expensive troops themselves. the mediteranean is lost for now

Its a time of re-arming and waiting.
Waiting for the invitable clash with the red bear. the growling was but a low murmur in the beginning but has increased to the sound of distant thunder.

Time was needed, and we fought hard enogh to gain it. The german warmachine will soon meet the red Tzar.

Stay tuned for the next installment about the rise and fall? of the new roman empire
