It happened in 1896.

Edit:
Lord Martin,
I don't want to take up his thread so, a quick reply here.

Sure, this game is obviously about ww2. But what the Italians spent on dealing with the Ethiopians - men, money, national pride, time - nearly crippled their nation (not to mention bearing the shame of the first European power defeated by an African nation) and thus, had everything to do with the immediate future of that country - electing Fascist Mussolini to finally conquer Ethiopia in ending years of frustration and humiliation.

Moreoever, the years of European war presented a weak, or weaker, Italy, had it finished the job it set out to accomplish 50 years before Fascism.

Same reason why I never play with Italy, besides they have a bad technology in all fields. I think Mussolini was to proud of his troops to relize that before it was to late. Although Italy was supposed to help Germany during WWII they gave them more problmes than help.

You can always do what Italy did during The Great War, join the Allies. Open up a southern front against the Jerries. Time it just right so that they are still stuck in their usual funk with the French and drive through Austria.

Alternatively, you can attack France right after they DoW Germany, wait a few months until they are fully involved and then drive north with cavalry and infantry equipped with engineering brigades. Take Paris before the Germans break throguh (which takes years after all) and puppet or just hold on to metropolitian France and N. Africa.
