Hey I just discovered this yesterday and I watched the streams on youtube. The game looks like it will be amazing!

Sorry if already posted! I couldn't find any threads about this at least going back a few pages.

From what I've seen, the most glaring game element that is the most limiting and unrealistic is the small 4 x 4 limit for zoned buildings. Since a small road is 2 squares wide, the squares are twice as small as most city builders, making it really 2 x 2 if you compare to other city builders. In order to have realistically diverse lots, I think zones should be able to be at least twice as big on each side, 8 x 8, and a good max size would be 16 x 16. From the released gameplay, this clearly causes visual repetition, and very unrealistically small sized plots for villas and especially large high density buildings. For villas (high level low density residential) the house takes up the whole plot with no yard; I've never seen such a big house on such a small lot in my life. There are no skyscrapers in the real world (buildings higher than ~200m) that occupy such a small space, it's just not practical. With "Skylines" being in the title, I would think there would be an emphasis on being able to grow nice diverse and realistic skyscrapers and skylines. There are also countless low density buildings that should take up more space (villas/estates, malls, low density office buildings, farms, most industrial factories and warehouses).

There are some pretty easy solutions:

1) Obviously you should be able to have buildings that are longer on the street side i.e. 8 x 4. This could be done without changing any game mechanics.

2) It seems to me that it would be pretty easy to adjust the current 4 deep zone mechanics.
-There could be different plot size limits for different zoning (bigger for high density), but this doesn't solve the problem of low density plots that are too small.
-I think simply making the zones 8 squares deep would be easy and acceptable- this present the problem of overlapping zones, but they must already have a solution for that because you can already overlap zones (actually I haven't seen what their solution is in any of the videos).
-They could make a zone editor tool where you can paint in bigger zoning areas (more squares to put zones in) up to a limit (probably 8 deep). This would probably be the hardest to implement with the current system, but probably the most satisfactory solution.

3) They could combine zones that come from different roads. So two back to back 4 x 4 zones could equate to one 8 x 4 zone. This is pretty much how SC4 and SC2013 do it. This wouldn't be hard to implement, but since the current system allows for a lot of gaps it would be a bit messy without the ability to manually extent the zones more than 4 deep.

Ive read this post and I have one question for you. Have you ever coded something like this game? I don't mean a all out AAA rating game but something simple that uses a flexible grid?

I belive this isn't going to happen and the amount of free space is why they have included things like the Japanese garden and park areas to go in the green space between houses :/

Yes I've brought this up before, actually a few people did. However, it seems 4x4 is gonna be max for zones. I also suggested that it should then go 4x5 or 6x4 etc... But alas, we have to be happy for now, I'm not sure how difficult it would be to change it now in the game.

I haven't done any coding. But they've already coded the current zoning system that goes out 4 squares from the road, would it really be that hard to make it go 6 or 8 squares out?

The 4x4 zone isn't that bad. They've already mentioned that the really tall buildings are plopped, so that means they can be much bigger than 4x4. So it won't look weird. And if you think that it's better for skyscrapers to be zoned, it's more realistic being plopped, and you get to customize your skyline anyway.

Skyscrapers grow in zones like every other zoned building, I think you've been confused between ploppable buildings (Police stations, fire stations, water plants etc.) and zoned buildings - they stated in their dev diary that all RCI buildings are zoned and not plopped.

Nope:
Hi! The maximum size of the zoned building is 4x4 with much variation starting from small 1x1 houses. The bigger buildings are under player's control and those exceed the 4x4 slot (like most of the skyscrapers). How about we write the next dev diary about the zoning? I'll have game designer Henkka (co_fiirdraak) answer your questions then!

And further down

Oh okey! Cool. So most skyscrapers are player placeable? But can we expect smaller skyscrapers to be zoned buildings? Will there be larger buildings for all the different zones?
Smaller ones yes! The ones that fit nicely on the 4x4 grid ;)

There, and here's the forum post about it, it was made a while ago:

I think this is the one thing that would make the biggest difference to giving the game a realistic, real skyline look.

Great post. I'm torn between what you said being the most important (I call it the "city center effect" which CO apparently doesn't care about).. or having zones larger than 4x4.

This is my favorite thread on this forum, ever.

Is this funny to anyone else? It's been 14 years since Sim City 4.. The game engine this game is running on can simulate water flowing, and we can build dams, the trees move in the wind etc... You can simulate a farm animal, yet somehow the zoning system is so inflexible they can't add another cube in each direction and make 5x5 4x5 or other zones sizes? What is going on here?

I am no coder so please don't yell at me :)
BUT
could they not make it so if there is a 4x4 with another 4x4 behind it and a 4x4 beside it then let it grow taking over the one beside and behind it thereby making it a 8x8 for large buildings.

You would think so...

I don't know about 8x8.. but in the original SimCity there was that one 3x6 building that would grow from two C-$$$ tiles.. for an 18 square tile building side-by-side, and cities skylines appears limited to 4x4 or 16 square tiles.. so as far as zones go, this game is a step back from the original 1989 Sim City.
