Prologue
Scribes will write down 1066. as a good and peaceful year for the kingdom. Norman pirates stay clear from the coast, Venice dares not challenge our rule over Dalmatia, Romans are fighting their wars east and have no time for the Balkans. Dubrovnik keeps to itself and Diocleans are docile. There are no signs of trouble either from the north and the west. There had been peace with Hungary and German Empire for a small eternity, since peace is a rare fruit in this troubled region...
The kingdom is split into two: White Croatia and Dalmatia under direct rule of the King and the Duchy of Slavonija ruled by the Kings kinsman Zvonimir Dmitar. There are three minor noble houses in White Croatia, and up to no good. The Frangepan of Veglia, Kosaca in Zachlumia and Subics in Usora.
The king resides at Nin castle, just outside the gates of the pearl of Adriatic, the royal city of Zadar. He has one daughter from a previous marriage. And, YES ladies, the widower king IS available again...
Chapter I – Reign of Petar Kresimir from 1066. to 1085.
Dalmatian winter. Not all that bad, until the wind comes, cool winds from Dinara, freezing you down to the bone. As I entered the keep, my mind was worrying a thousand troubles. What will be of my kingdom, what awaits us? No heir to the throne. Now that is a problem. It might be time to marry again. But it is not an easy thing to find a bride suitable to wear the title of a Queen.
Next morning, after the usual everyday court affairs I had a private meeting with the chancellor to decide on a marriage. And he had a firm bride candidate. Mathilde, daughter of the Beatrice, Duchess of Toscana. Only daughter. By sunset, an envoy left from Zadar Harbour to Tuscany...
The positive response came from the bride herself, since she was chancellor on her mothers court. The wedding was a grand festival. People were happy with their new Queen. Except three men. I've had a feeling they were up to no good for quite some time. It might be time to put an end to their power.
Break down the Kosaca, Subics and Frangepan. After a strong pressure, Kosaca surrendered his lands. Zachlumia is now a royal fief. Subics refused, and although we found an old claim on Veglia, Frangepan refused to return their fief. Tensions rose, and in 1069. a civil war broke out. The rebellion was quickly put down by the combined forces of Duke of Slavonija and our ally, the Republic of Ragusa...
Mathilde and I had a son, we named him Pavao. From his birth the boy holds the titles of Duke of Dalmatia and Count of Veglia.
The following years were peaceful, and prosperous. Many new holdings were built in the realm.
In May 1073. our dear Mother-in-law passed away and Pavao, as eldest male grandchild inherited the Duchy of Toscana.
Things were not good. This inheritance lead to tensions with Germany. Since these were our lands now, and trouble brew in Tuscany, since the local lords did not want a child as their ruler. In the end, I revoked the boys' claims to Tuscany. He will inherit them when his time comes. It was time to place a steel grip over those lands.
In the years that followed, all of the local lords were forcefully submitted, the entire realm in royal hands. Pavao retained Modena, Parma and Lucca as his personal fief, Cremona was granted to the Church, and Neda, my eldest daughter became Duchess of Tuscany.
These wars did not go unseen. Our power became obvious. Ever since the Dioclean King Mihajlo passed away, the people of Hum were unhappy that his son chose the orthodox faith. In the end nobles asked us to intervene and seize Hum.
In 1082. a war broke out between Croatia and Dioclea. We had won great victories in the battles of Zachlumia, Ragusa and Hum. In the end Bodin was forced to surrender Hum and pay tribute. While I was busy in the east, a combined force of Venice, Genoa and Pisa struck Cremona. They were too much to handle. Cremona is now a Genoese holding. They will pay, when the time is right.
My second daughter, Marija, is now the Duchess of Bosnia.
On September 9th, Petar Kresimir passed away, and his son Pavao inherited the crown. In commemoratio to the King, the bishopric of Parma-Modena was created.
