Chapter Twenty-One: Land retaken
Yunes had hoped to take a share of the disintegrating English kingdom but the counts who abandoned the boy king pledged allegiance to other kings thereby strengthening Castille, Venice, Sweden and Hungary which were the strongest christian kingdoms. Things were not going as Yunes would have liked however in a dream he saw a great warrior and he thought it was his grandfather Guanarigato then the vision turned to a great city in the fog and after that he was in this place. Yunes was puzzled about the signification of this dream.
When the emir of Mallorca died, most of his vassals rebelled. It was not forgotten that the province of Niebla had been lost by his grandfather when the emir of Mallorca had joined a war against the chief of Canarias. The meaning of the dream became clearer. Now it was a time to strike and retake what should never have been lost, there would be no mercy for the enemy.
The war did not start well, during the first battle his cousin Urz’ig was wounded and only a miracle could have saved his life. Fortunately a healer was fetched and the gods were with him so that he would not die though he would not be well for some time. It was not long before Niebla became a chiefdom again and a fair amount of gold was given by the former sheik to save his life.
Urz’ig recovered from his illness therefore he was chosen to lead an army to Menorca, the only province held by the emir of Mallorca, the time to reach the island was longer than the days needed to storm the citadel. Yunes had won another province and Urz’ig was much-praised for all his glorious deeds in battle.
A tourney was made to honour the brave marshal and the best knights came from many lands in North Africa and in Iberia. His new neighbour the emir of Badajoz filled with hatred and green with envy became a rival. The payment for his insults was only put off but sooner or later he would learn what it cost to offend a lion.
The clergy in Beni Yanni and the nobles in Orania had not been idle while Yunes had his attention turned to the North and they started rebellions in the name of their god. Their religion died in the province when the rebels were sent to the grave by the Mauretanian soldiers.
This war had been expensive and during this time there had been corruption problems and the fishery in El Rif had troubles so that Yunes had work to do when peace returned. Yunes was successful in this task, Beni Yanni became rich and Algeciras prosperous. The stability was increased again and several improvements were built.
Sekla fell in love with Predslava. His brother Akli was not so lucky as he had a falling out with his wife, the words he sang were to no avail:
“Our sun is set, our day is done, I’m left here wondering
Is this the end, my final words to you
Day turned to night and now you’re gone, I’m left here pondering
Can this be true, are we really through
You were the wind beneath my wings, taught me how to fly
With you I lived among the kings, how could this ever die
So I say farewell, I’m yours forever,
And I always will be
We were one, we were all, we were the only
Future full of hope, nothing could stand in our way
But dreams can change, visions fall, I feel so lonely
I would walk through fire for just one more day
You were the angel of my life, taught me to be free
Now I’m a stranger in your eyes, walls are closing in on me
So I say farewell, I’m yours forever
And I always will be
Missing you, in my heart you are the one
And you always will be
When I turn to the east, I see no dawn,
But after darkness comes the light
And when I turn to the west, the silent night hides all
Where is the light that shines so bright
So I say farewell, I’m yours forever
And I always will be
Missing you, in my heart you are the one
And you always will be”*
Yunes worried about this, he had problems with his wife, so had his uncle, his son and several of his cousins. He was also grieved when his mother left this world too soon. With these troubles, he felt in no mood to anger his son by refusing him some piece of land, therefore he promised he would give him a province to rule and some weeks after Sekla was given the chiefdom of Bejaija.
