I apologise for the lack of update :eek:o. I have been very busy these last few days (too much work :() and I am going to travel a lot in the two following weeks so I will not have enough time to write the next part of the story before July. I hope I will then be able to write something interesting about the house of Canarias and the strange medieval world.

The next chapter should be ready before the end of the week.

Chapter Twenty-One: Land retaken

Yunes had hoped to take a share of the disintegrating English kingdom but the counts who abandoned the boy king pledged allegiance to other kings thereby strengthening Castille, Venice, Sweden and Hungary which were the strongest christian kingdoms. Things were not going as Yunes would have liked however in a dream he saw a great warrior and he thought it was his grandfather Guanarigato then the vision turned to a great city in the fog and after that he was in this place. Yunes was puzzled about the signification of this dream.

When the emir of Mallorca died, most of his vassals rebelled. It was not forgotten that the province of Niebla had been lost by his grandfather when the emir of Mallorca had joined a war against the chief of Canarias. The meaning of the dream became clearer. Now it was a time to strike and retake what should never have been lost, there would be no mercy for the enemy.

The war did not start well, during the first battle his cousin Urz’ig was wounded and only a miracle could have saved his life. Fortunately a healer was fetched and the gods were with him so that he would not die though he would not be well for some time. It was not long before Niebla became a chiefdom again and a fair amount of gold was given by the former sheik to save his life.

Urz’ig recovered from his illness therefore he was chosen to lead an army to Menorca, the only province held by the emir of Mallorca, the time to reach the island was longer than the days needed to storm the citadel. Yunes had won another province and Urz’ig was much-praised for all his glorious deeds in battle.

A tourney was made to honour the brave marshal and the best knights came from many lands in North Africa and in Iberia. His new neighbour the emir of Badajoz filled with hatred and green with envy became a rival. The payment for his insults was only put off but sooner or later he would learn what it cost to offend a lion.

The clergy in Beni Yanni and the nobles in Orania had not been idle while Yunes had his attention turned to the North and they started rebellions in the name of their god. Their religion died in the province when the rebels were sent to the grave by the Mauretanian soldiers.

This war had been expensive and during this time there had been corruption problems and the fishery in El Rif had troubles so that Yunes had work to do when peace returned. Yunes was successful in this task, Beni Yanni became rich and Algeciras prosperous. The stability was increased again and several improvements were built.

Sekla fell in love with Predslava. His brother Akli was not so lucky as he had a falling out with his wife, the words he sang were to no avail:

“Our sun is set, our day is done, I’m left here wondering
Is this the end, my final words to you
Day turned to night and now you’re gone, I’m left here pondering
Can this be true, are we really through

You were the wind beneath my wings, taught me how to fly
With you I lived among the kings, how could this ever die

So I say farewell, I’m yours forever,
And I always will be

We were one, we were all, we were the only
Future full of hope, nothing could stand in our way
But dreams can change, visions fall, I feel so lonely
I would walk through fire for just one more day

You were the angel of my life, taught me to be free
Now I’m a stranger in your eyes, walls are closing in on me

So I say farewell, I’m yours forever
And I always will be
Missing you, in my heart you are the one
And you always will be

When I turn to the east, I see no dawn,
But after darkness comes the light
And when I turn to the west, the silent night hides all
Where is the light that shines so bright

So I say farewell, I’m yours forever
And I always will be
Missing you, in my heart you are the one
And you always will be”*

Yunes worried about this, he had problems with his wife, so had his uncle, his son and several of his cousins. He was also grieved when his mother left this world too soon. With these troubles, he felt in no mood to anger his son by refusing him some piece of land, therefore he promised he would give him a province to rule and some weeks after Sekla was given the chiefdom of Bejaija.

* Always Will Be - Hammerfall

Too bad you weren't able to make use of the confusion in England, but Mallorca is supposed to be quite nice this time of year. :)

<3 Hammerfall!!!

As I have earlier acclaimed, when a man has problems on the homefront, a man must find a ship and sail far away to blunder rich lands and bring jewellery home to satisfy those lazy complaining bastards.

Slinky: Islands in summer are good :) (I was in one last week). When I saw a boy on the English throne I thought it would be interesting but Castille vassalised Apulia and Venice took the other vassals in the area so I have to be patient, there may be opportunities later. And the boy is doing a surprisingly good job in Great Britain.

Enewald: This is the fourth Hammerfall song used in this AAR, there may be more if it fits the story. Too bad I do not have the skills to write a story as epic as their songs :(.

Well, the house of Canarias seems to follow your advice and the ladies do not like changing so more will come :).

Chapter Twenty-Two: Yunes the Conqueror

Once more Yunes had to leave home in a rebel crushing trip, the players this time were the peasants in Menorca who wanted a king worshipping their god, swords where a good answer to their request. Yunes wanted to marry his third son but the only woman he found in the tribe of Wends was not really suitable… A few months later, Yunes found a good wife and Watt'as was married, as a wedding gift he was given Menorca.

What a nice crazed heretic inbred with nice traits :)

Yunes was on friendly terms with his cousin Agellid who ruled their forefathers’ land. When his daughter Jdira finished her education, Agellid made a wedding proposal that Yunes did not refuse.

Yunes spent a lot of time watching the stars and he guessed a new war would soon come, his dreams let him know that he would be the one who would start the fight. Dreams and stars made his knowledge of the universe grow and he sang these words:

“Child of dew-spangled cobweb, Mother to the Moon
Constellations beholders of the 3rd vagrant
Theater for the play of life

Tragedienne of heavens
Watching the eyes of the night
Sailing the virgin oceans
A Planetride for Mother and Child

Floating upon the quiet hydrogen lakes
In this ambrosial merrry-go-round they will gaze
Ephemeral life touched by a billion-year-show
Separating the poet from the woe

Tragedienne of heavens
Watching the eyes of the night
Sailing the virgin oceans
A Planetride for Mother and Child

Oracle of the Delfian Domine
Witness of Adam's frailty
Seer of the master prophecy
The stellar world her betrothed

Wanderers in cosmic caravan
Universal bond - The Starborn

A son in search for the truth
Following the pages of Almagest
Discovering the origin of dreams
Stargazers ride through the ancient realms”*

The crowning of a boy as ruler of the Zirids was interesting. Soon Gabes and Malta became independent and easy preys. Yunes had now too many provinces under his control that is why he gave Beni Yanni to Akli.

Yunes still wanted more lands but his neighbours were powerful. However he noticed that the Turk sultan was old and he would die soon, a dagger would make sure the new sultan would not be too strong. The heir to the throne died and the new heir was only a four year old boy. He came to the throne in the following year and he soon had to fight rebellious vassals. Two more provinces became part of the Mauretanian empire: Mallorca and Kairwan.

Enewald: There are a lot of old women, young pagan ones with interesting stats are seldom found (as in RL :D). I half wanted to see what the crazed inbred would be able to do in my court but as I wanted to give Watt'as a province and hoped he would have children I decided I should find a more suitable woman.

Chapter Twenty-Three: Wars and rebellions

Yunes enjoyed peace for a few months though he was not idle. Many temples were built to thank the gods for the victories, roads and harbours were developed and the construction of more mines, windmills and glassworks was undertaken during these peaceful days. Yunes had more glory and gold than any of his forefathers but it would never be enough for him.

People called catholics who worshipped only one God had conquered provinces in the south of Iberia. Yunes did not understand what were the differences between them and the muslims but he knew they had only hatred for him and all those who still believed in the old Berber gods. Anyway the lands that belonged to them were too tempting for him and war could not be avoided. However Almeria was not alone, their allies joined the fight and Denia and Slavonia declared war against Mauretania.

WarSlavonia.jpg

Denia was the first province conquered and then Almeria followed. The emir of Murcia felt threatened by the Mauretanian expansion therefore he decided to launch an attack which was quickly repelled and Almansa was taken from him.

Yunes was still at war with the duke of Slavonia and the stubborn war leader rejected every peace offer. The first army sent made a mutiny and disappeared while at sea, so troops from Orania were sent to invade the province of Lucca which belonged to him and after that when Yunes proposed to give up his claim on this land peace was accepted.

While the soldiers were not there a bold leader decided to extend the influence of his crime organisation and thieves prospered in Orania.

ThievesOrania.jpg

Even after the return of the host, several months were needed to capture them all. This song was made about their chief and became quite popular:

“He was a leader of a small gang
Committing crimes each day
But time has changed where he was proud
It’s a far away

He took living easy, his bad reputation
Oh it was known all around
But he didn’t care no, he made dirty money
Now he is down and out

Thought he knew the tricks of life
Prowling in the dark
Now he’s left by all his friends
‘Cause he lived apart, of them
He was a leader, malicious and violent
His fame is covered with blood
Now he’s just a number, he lost all his power
The king has lost his face

Down down down, though the king lost his crown
Caught and sentenced, he was guilty
Down down down, though the king lost his crown
It’s too late - far too high
Late far too high
”*

During this time the muslim clergy in Niebla also started a rebellion. As usual Yunes chose the military answer, swords and arrows being better than words to end an uprising.

The enemies outside the borders were afraid of the Mauretanian king. But his new provinces were not thoroughly under his control. Rebels made trouble in Almeria, Denia and Almansa. Civil wars were a major problem for a few years. Yunes could be a hard man against the troublemakers but he was also a generous king and when the peasants in Almansa were starving he decided to send help. This kindness put an end to the rebellion in this province.

Taking over the iberian peninsula should do wonders for your cash flow.

Is it possible to see a map of your chiefdom?

Slinky: Thank you for reading and commenting, Iberian money is great indeed . I do not have a map ready but if you want I will try to make one during this week-end and post it next week.

I think it would be good to include more maps, and as I will soon be reaching the end of the first century since 1066, it could be nice to show what strange worlds CK can make :).
