We could try a full-up Fighter Strike, just to see how many missiles that STO can handle.

... it would muck up the planet's ecosphere; but then, with that Fluorine in the atmosphere (???) the place is no vacation-spot anyway.

Spotted another STO.

This is not just an update on the first STO we found... it says "New Contact".

Curiously, the estimated size of the "Ground Unit contact" on the planet has gone down by 2,900 tons.

Apparently the STO is treated as a normal ground unit until positively identified.

OK, we hurt them THAT time!

We launched a six-squadron Fighter strike, with four squadrons aimed at the STO and the other two squadrons aimed at the ground units. The six Heavy Cruisers each committed three missiles (under three different Fire Controls) as well. A total of 186 missiles, all in seperate salvos.

This succeeded in swamping the enemy Point Defense, and they only managed to shoot down seventeen of the incoming missiles... roughly one-tenth of them.

The missiles that got through pounded them pretty hard... knocking out 17 anti-ship STO and 9 PD STO, as well as destroying several of the ground units.

We've lost track of the STO unit... either destroyed or just impossible to see through all the explosions.

Messed up the planet a bit... the temperature is down another 15 degrees Centigrade... but I suppose the term "nuclear winter" has limited application to a planet that only reaches minus 63 degrees in the summer anyway.

Need... more... missiles...

Did you notice that the Rascals are using Combat Mechs? These guys think they're playing BattleTech!

That looks like probably all of the STOs have been blown up, based on the detected tonnage. Another job well done, send in the Marines!

I've had them parked on the jump point until the area was secured.

Bringing them over near the planet now... it will take a few days.

Christ, we're using up a lot of missiles... maybe 4,000 missiles fired so far.

The Salvager has nearly reached the field of wrecks. The Troop Transports and Drop Ships are on their way inward toward the planet. The Gate Construction ship is building a gate leading out of the system, and in the meantime we've got a jump tender parked on the jump point.

It looks like it will take about two-and-a-half weeks to salvage a 9,000-ton enemy wreck. So our salvagers, at least, will be here for months.

Time to send in the marines and take the system (and its technology) from rascals' cold dead hands.

Also, maybe leave any other rascals be, this looks expensive ;)

I think we should spend a few years focusing on setting up more mines... especially at Gallicite ore locations.

We should also consider building Beam Weapon ships as soon as our technology allows. They need no ammo.

So far, our top scorers for enemy ships destroyed are Kiwi and two nPCs each with three Rascal vessels to their credit.

Just behind them are Jukaga and three nPCs, all with two ships destroyed.

Blaaat is the Orbital Bombardment leader, with over 10,000 tons of enemy ground forces destroyed... largely the highly dangerous STOs.

... the game actually keeps track of this stuff for me now.

The first Rascal wreck... an Allegience class... has been salvaged. It yielded a Thermal sensor equal to our own current tech level, and a few minerals.

Starting on the next wreck now.

EDIT:

The second wreck has been salvaged. Another Thermal sensor and an Auxiliary Control workstation recovered, plus minerals.

With two of the eighteen wrecks recovered, we have already harvested enough Gallicite to build 90+ new missiles.

We blow them up with our missiles, strip the wrecks for Gallicite, and use the Gallicite to make more missiles to blow up more of them.

Our Space Marine / Drop Ship reinforcements have nearly arrived in the DX Cancri system.

Just need 80 more wrecks to make up for the cost of missiles :)

Before launching the drop of the Space Marines, we first send in one more small wave of missiles (18 of them, from the Heavy Cruisers) to see if any of them get shot down by STO. All 18 missiles reach their targets and explode, destroying several more enemy units (and mucking up the ecosystem a bit more). So it appears that the Rascal's point defense has been properly suppressed.

Next up: Invasion!

Hmmm...

I've tried a bit more bombardment using our size-6 strength-9 Falchion missiles, and have reduced the enemy unit from 20,100 tons down to 16,900 tons.

I wonder if we should just obliterate him with missiles instead of risking a ground battle against an enemy who probably out-techs us in that field?

The planet is becoming a bit radioactive... perhaps more than a bit... but the place is a dump anyway. Temperature of -80 Centigrade or worse and a corrosive Fluorine atmosphere.

The main reason not to is that you would risk destroying any installations present, but I don't think Rascal planets have much more than a DSTS and a couple of transfer facilities so there's not a lot of downside.

However...consider closing and using beams to finish them off if you pursue this course of action, that may save gallicite compared to missile bombardment. Of course, using troops is guaranteed to save gallicite because rebuilding ground troops "only" takes Vendarite and we will probably just end up needing to upgrade (i.e. rebuild) our troops anyways.

Actually based on that last sentence I think landing troops is our best bet. Life is cheap, Gallicite is expensive.
