Dog just walked over keyboard - may doublepost.

Just got game and have played 3-4 times. Like game very much but not being locked into a faction. Why should we not be able to leave faction and make war/peace with anyone we want?

Also, who is the faction leader?
After only one faction left can I then leave faction and go to war with former allies?

thanks

The concept behind the factions is to simulate the nature of the Second World War. The faction leaders are UK (Allies) Soviet Union (Comintern), Germany (Axis). They stay that way until they are annexed, then it shifts to the next nation in the faction.

Factions can only split nations off when at peace. So, yes, when there's only one faction left, you can dismiss folks from the faction (assuming you are the leader - if not, simply load as the leader, then do it, then go back to your nation). This assumes you're not in a private war against a neutral party.

Remember, you are not obligated to join a faction, unless you happen to be the leader. Even then, you get to choose who becomes a part of your faction with the exception of those nations that are starting out. This is a small number except for the large number of commonwealth nations for the UK. If you want to be rid of them before the war, simply dismiss them from the allies before war breaks out.

Thanks for the info. I should have specified that I meant for Armageddon. It makes good sense to have the factions for historic WWII, but not for a fantasy scenario. It is in Armageddon that I can't see who the faction leaders are. Forgot that I can load as anyone in middle of a game - a very nice feature of HOI2.

Ah, never played the armageddon scenario myself. If I had to guess, considering that the Arma and DD scenarios did not involve substantial recoding, that the political underpinnings of the system are still there. To find out faction leaders, the wiki might have that information. Otherwise try going to the diplomacy menu. The filter in the upper left that lets you just look at particular continents or factions should be able to help you with this. I believe (without opening the game up right now) that the faction leader is the top of the list, though I am unsure as to how this works in the fantasy scenario.

You can play the Abyss scenario where you get a few months before the war breaks out and you can chose to join the alliances or not.
