Hey fpolli, the host that we were using when you were playing wasn't working right for some reason, but we played with another host after you left and everything went fine. We even basically finished the war.

I'm in Tank_busters game as well. We have a great group. I think the secret is that we are all well into our 30's with kids and families. God, I sound like an old man, but maturity makes a big difference.

I'm an ex Third Reich/ASL/Panzer Leader board player and I think that kind of patience is required in the MP environment. Choose your players very carefully and stretch the game out. Tank Buster is right about how the diplomacy really spices the game up. It keeps us interested and engaged until the next meeting.

Plus, I've noticed two different types of gamers out there in an MP environment: The history buff who simply loves all things related to WWII, and the game buff who simply loves to win. Avoid playing with the second type.

A rich MP environment is very cool. I've had a blast and made some new friends along the way.

Cool, Marceaux

See you then.

And Ulster, join our game, you sound like our kind of gamer. I'm 36 with two kids and I love WWII. I used to love Third Reich and playing it with my Dad. I've often thought somebody should have made a computer game out of that game. HOI is about as close as I've seen.

I'm working on some mods that I think will improve the game. One is a set of events and tweaks to the USA to make it tougher and to model the turmoil of the late 30s, with the labor strife and the lingering depression. I'm also going to model the racial problems of the war years. Also, keeping warentry down, since as late as late 1937 public opinion polls had over 90% of respondents saying "STAY OUT." These mods will make the game a little more historic in feel for the USA player, give him some decisions of moment to make while he is not militarily involved, and make it tougher.

The other thing is changes to the tech tree to slow down tech and avoid situations of jet fighters duking it out over battles between advanced super-heavy tanks while ICBMs throw nukes across the oceans, in 1943. I've made some changes that I hope will keep the tech appearing roughly when it did. I'm trying to make it possible to have major techs appear no more than a year earlier than they in fact did.

Avalon Hill did partner with another company (I forget who) and published a PC version of Third Reich using 3rd Edition rules about 3 years ago. However, it was woefully inadequate in terms of AI and very buggy.

Regarding joining your game. I really only have time for one game as I travel quite a bit, and I'm really quite pleased with the group we have assembled. However, I think we may be looking for one more player for the next game in a few weeks. If you are interested, let me know and I will get you in contact with the game administrator.

meeting

elbarto, last time we just met at 2130 US Eastern Time in Valkyrienet. The only thing I did not like was we picked up a couple of players who were hanging around, and they were a pain in the ass. We also never set up house rules on anything.

I'd set up a game and give you guys the IP to do it that way, but for some reason I can't host a game. On my LAN and on Valkyrienet, I start a game and nobody else can join. I can join a game but not host. Dunno.

hehehe...that's a good 'un...
Since your expectations are so very low, then you just keep aiming for the stars--you'll get there someday!

I'm looking very doubtful

I've already nuked my router and home network trying to figure out how to get this fricking game to play multiplayer. Nobody seems to have any answers for my questions. I'm not too interested in risking nuking the whole fricking thing again so I can spend several more hours on the fun exercise of trying to reconfigure my computer. I already have to go out and buy a new router tomorrow. All for a fricking game.

How we did it

I am the "Adminsitrator" for the MP group Ulster and Tank Buster are in Still bucking for a promotion to "warrant officer" here on the boards.

Anyway I posted the intial string for our group, and what I did was is the begining an email blitz engaging everyone right off the bat as to what they wanted to do. The game didnt start for 2-3 weeks the whole time was correspondance, my role was coordianting like replies and coming up with options for votes so that we had choices for house rules.

The other key factor was as Ulster pointed out we are all in the same boat as to age and family which is crucial to our group. No one can really play a whole night, no one wants to, HOI is a once a week escape only.

Here are some tips that have worked for us:

1. Tech Officer: Find the guy that has the ability to restore your saved games, host, and employ the fix scripts and is comfortable doing so. Tank Buster is our tech officer, and he is the funny one to boot (sucking my thumb ! please.....)

2. Agreed house rules: dont figure them out in the que waiting to select your nation, spend a week do some emails and produce a document that states your rules. Then there is no bitching everything is there everyone has the doc, everyone knows the deal, and the consequences, use it as a base and keep players active in its evolution, once our game ends we are going to have new rounds of votes in our group to add a few things etc.

3. Times: You play in one sitting some one is going to shit because yep, they are going to loose and loose all that time in one night, thats one hell of an investment to get croaked in say..... turkey for instance. once or twice a week keeps the game going for a bit longer and as a result players have something to look forward to, it isnt all on the line in one night and therefore the world isnt split up by 37.

4. Responsibility: You can go the historical route, or something similar, our group is the something similar. We dont have a fantasy game going, WWII didnt start in 1936. So its a bit long in the tooth but once you get to 1940 everyone is going to have the ability to fight and not be walked over. Some players dont care its about winning, some play for the expirence of stratagizing against a player over a long period of time and using alliances and treaties to make ingame gains.

5. Role Playing: this aspect has been the best surprise for me, some of my negotiations in charecter have been pretty detailed and indepth. This can really add to your MP game and when you play once a week, this will keep you going.

6. Personalities: you have to remember there is a human on the other side of the screen. Everyone wants to win and has an ego, just remember everyone has thier quirks, no one is perfect, find like minded people focus on them and build a group around them. You dont have to see eye to eye on everything but you do have to bare in mind that the other person wants to win, and more then likely wants to win fairly and in a manner that thier opponent has fun. This is crucial because its a game, and if you get the wrong person in your group it can screw it up for everyone. In our group we have had some bumps, but everyone has come to the table right away and we got past them.

Hope this helps your MP expirence.
