So, I was thinking about the learning curve of the Paradox's games, and this question pop up in my mind.

What things do you guys think that are obvious, but people might take a while to learn?

Probably one of the most common confusions I've seen new people have is the war system. Making claims, occupying systems and worlds, what status quo means etc.

At a more abstract level I'd say playing the game without being aggressively militaristic/xenophobic. I don't know if it's just the level of memes or the fact that people are more likely to post about their shockingly evil empires rather than their fun utopian ones, but I've run into an oddly high number of new players who think they're meant to play the game by declaring war on every other empire they can. I've had a couple of conversations recently with new people on the subreddit who had no clue that improving relations and treaties were sometimes a good choice even for aggressive empires.

Often times when you think you're blocked in by hostile wildlife, you actually aren't and can continue exploration if you take the time to set the science ship to passive and navigate it through the system without triggering a fight with the hostiles.

Also, notoriously just about every aspect of the tech card system.

Ship designs.

- It's not the default, why should I do it?

- Wait I'm supposed to mix things? The FE doesn't do that.

- Oh yeah, Destroyers! I saw a video where that was a key conquest tech!

- The Cruisers are supposed to go in front of the smaller ships?!

Maybe this is just me, but this one took me entirely too long to realize.

A key part of early game expansion is sending your military fleet to scout ahead of your science ships. That way they can clear out any minor space hazards while allowing your science ships to survey new systems uninterrupted. It will also let you know where habitable worlds and chokepoints are, so you'll be able to survey in a more efficient manner.

Oh boy, I wish we could automate military exploration like we can with science ships.

The big one I've seen new players do (and did when I was starting out) is not colonizing planets because of low habitability. Even if a planet has 0 habitability (which doesn't happen often), it's still worth colonizing just for the extra pop growth. Then again, that might change in 4.0 ...

Also, the many threads about misunderstanding war exhaustion and disengagement. If they ever get around to updating the war system, I really hope they rework those things to be more intuitive.

This one is very imersion breaking for me, I try to avoid it for roleplay purposes, but when I want to min max I do it.

You don't have to go to the diplomacy menu, there's a claims menu. But yeah it's not intuitive compared to other games.
