Dire ducks spawned from the spawner do not have the spin ability. If you replaced dire ducks with trolls or something in your scenario they would probably have died just the same. Sounds more like they took on more than they could handle, try it again on very easy or easy. Normal is HARD even for experienced heroes.
 
Sleeping ducks aren't an issue as you can kill them before they fully awake and spin. Spawned ducks from the monster spawner don't use it. The only issue is if the DM wakes them up ahead of time. I agree that they shouldn't be possessed when asleep OR they should have a straight, short spin about the length and charge up of the imps and at the end of their path they spin where they stop. Either of those fixes the issue, there doesn't need to be any other solution. Messing with the possess mechanics or lowering their health will just screw over the DM/ducks in a bad way.
