I thought that by having the invention of gavelkind you can actually, you know, pass it. Nope! Requires that you also need to discover this feudal thingy.

Boom!

So upon death, my land was divvied up into five different kingdoms. (It created the kingdom-level titles I had refused to create, or, in one case, had actually paid to destroy.)

That was fun while it lasted.

How would implementing gavelkind fix this? Gavelkind is one title per son - the realm would break up anyway. Primogeniture is the best option for a united realm...

I had already given each child a title; landed them. Gavelkind would not have created the king titles I had not created (or had destroyed). So the one king title would have gone to one son. At worst, the unlanded ones would have gotten a county in the home duchy.

Edit: And there's no way you're going to see primogeniture in 11th Century Africa.
