I have been playing CK2 on multiplayer with my friends since the early release of this game and we haven't yet encountered a similar problem. Google and local forum also seems to be silient.

Problem persists since latest (17th December) hotfix release.

Game sadly became entirely unplayable for us because of random time freezes after ~15 mins of running the session. Time basically stops, as if the game itself was paused, but there is no "Game paused" caption and one or two persons are stuck few days behind according to the time tooltip. Everything is working and is still clickable, but for people who are stuck behind, issuing commands has no effect (though after saving and reloading we could see that their actions were acknowledged by the game). Everyone can still type on chat and everyone recieves sent messages. There is no error popup or anything similar - the game just stops.

Singleplayer works perfectly fine.

All possible DLCs enabled.

We have deleted all activated mods, verified game integrity and reinstalled it. No improvement.

I don't see any other reports of this in the MP forum. There is a bug with Ruler Designer, you can't use that in MP at present, but I believe the symptoms are very different from what you report.

Does it matter who is host?

please have all platers go through my MP checklist for this game:

- make sure all players have opened the required Steam ports in all their active firewalls (each player may have up to 3)
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8571-GLVN-8711
- all players delete their documents/paradox/ck2/gfx/ folders, and let the game recreate them
- use no mods at all
- all players use the same language in-game
- when anyone gets an OOS error, re-host the game immediately, as it will almost certainly crash soon
- start your multiplayer games and wait half a minute or so before unpausing without any player performing any action at all. Only after the game has been unpaused should players begin doing actions like setting the council, declaring war etc.

Good luck!

I've got the same problem. Game stops in multiplayer when someone declares war or gets declared on. No mods, everyone has the same language.

EDIT:
When the game stops, everyone still stays connected. We can write in a chat and pause the game freely. The problem is just frozen time in the game. Game is basically unplayable for me in multiplayer, as it happens very often (caused by a war declaration).

@AndrewT I tried doing things off list you provided, unfortunately nothing changed

The game randomly stops, it does not go OOS. I have a MAC, an it seems that it's a problem. It does not change anything if the host is somebody else, the game keeps freezing for everyone. We were playing with all DLC's, no mods, the game was reinstalled, the documents file was cleared. I don't know what's going on, it's very frustrating because it's not even going OOS. I would like, for a game that I have payed about 200$, at least play smoothly on multiplayer. I was buying every paradox game and dlc, but the stability issues are getting VERY annoying. Please do something with that. Here you have a screenshot: every game ends after about 1-2 years, then it freezes. If you need any other specifications please just ask. Just do something to fix that.

FYI we here in tech support cannot fix any game bug. That's what the Bug Reports forum is for, if you feel this is a game bug rather than a local installation or network issue.

The OP has Windows, so if you do indeed have the same issue it's unlikely you being on Mac has anything to do with the problem.

It might be worth everyone doing a full clean re-install to make sure there's no installation problem.

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK2
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK2 or Documents CK2 locations, before installing again.

You'll likely need to ass steam.exe and ck2game.exe to the exceptions lists of your antivirus and firewall apps after doing that.

**File Locations on Mac OS X**
The executable and DLC folder are in Users/USER/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Crusader Kings II/
On OS X 10.8.x and later, Apple have hidden the /Users/USER/Library/ folder. To see it go to the Finder, hit command-shift-G (ie Go To) and type in ~/Library/ .
The user files (settings.txt, error logs, saved games, gfx, mods) are in /Users/USER/Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II/ .

Yep, I have the same problem :(
I have the same problem
Please confirm you've gone through my checklist above.

Problem still persists for me. I have only figured out that the problem strictly lies on my end, not my friend's. When I'm hosting, a random person gets his time frozen. On the other hand when one of my friends is hosting - it is only me, who gets dropped. Obviously the sessions where I am not the host last longer, even up to 10 years but till now I have been a designated host since I always purchased all DLCs. What is even more surprising, the same problem happens to appear in EU4.

All of the affected players seem (in this thread at least) to be from Poland here. Maybe somehow this is a clue?

To resolve your problem I subjected to your list. I even have formatted all of my hard drives and made clean Windows reinstall. Problem still persists, with no antiviruses turned on and firewall disabled. In January I'm also lucky (in this case) to be bound to two ISPs simultaneously with a contract. And the situations is very the same, I'm unable to host given that I tried two Internet services from diffrent ISPs. I do not have any idea where else I should look for clues which deeply saddens me given the fact that I'm right now on my time off from work.

Andrew, is it possible somehow to forward the case somwhere higher?

Did you check that all the required Steam ports are open in all your firewalls? Because your specific case really sounds like ports. There are many free sites out there which detect if ports you think are open, are really open. I suggest you try at least 3 of them; if any say a port is blocked it probably is.

Aside from that:
Are you connecting via wired or wireless? Whichever one, try the other.

Can you try your Steam account from some other location? This is to rule out your local network and computer as the issue. Then (assuming it works OK there) if possible can you move your computer to a different network (internet connection) and see if the problem follows the computer or not.

The game itself has no idea where you are.

Is the friend you are trying to play with in Poland also? Because you say he does not have the problem.

Are you all in the same Steam region? If so you could try moving regions in your Steam configuration.

There's no-one higher than me in tech support here, I'm afraid.

I have found the solution!!! The problem was with our internet provider, 2 of us were using the same internet provider company. They have changed our ip protocols from ipv4 to ipv6 or something like that. We have changed that back to ipv4 and everything works great. The game is very stable, we were playing a game with 8 players, 40 years not even one OOS. Thanks for helping us, and suggesting what may cause our problem.

It is common for polish players to have this problem, because it's a very popular internet provider - UPC.

Thank you, this is some wonderful news! I've been trying to figure it out for a long time too. By any chance, have you been recently blessed with ConnectBox router from UPC, as I was? Best wishes from Warsaw, mate :)!

YES! And thats the problem! I hope the solution will work for you too, you just have to log in your UPC account, and look for an option called service problems or something like that, and then you can pick there to change your protocols.

Can you provide more direct instructions? Can I change IPv6 to IPv4 automatically online or I have to directly contact tech support?

Log into your UPC account, click "pomoc", then you will have a panel called "Asystent Pomocy", then you will have a question, what services do cause you problems. Pick internet. Then you will be able to pick what kind of problem do you have, choose "Brak możliwości połączenia się z VPN, grami sieciowymi, brak opcji Bridge, Brak opcji Port Forwarding", and after that your router will automatically restart, and everything will be finally OK!

Reasuming:

Log into you UPC account > Pomoc > Asystent Pomocy > Internet > Brak możliwości połączenia się z VPN, grami sieciowymi, brak opcji Bridge, Brak opcji Port Forwarding
