The current timeline is 1914-1924. This makes it possible to fight a long war, but it complicates things. There were a lot of fighting going on after WWI, i.e. Turkish War of Independence, Soviet-Polish War, and a lot of other disputes. If we go for the 1924 end, how should we do with these wars? As we all know, HoI can't handle peaceful times (in between the wars) to good.

Points and opinions?

1924 Germany will be pathetically weak, what would stop the human player from just crushing them? No allowance to declare war?

and if the timeline is that long, you'll have to include all the little wars the USSR fought against the Caucas nations, Belorus, Ukraine, and a rather large war with Poland where Poland actually did EXTREMELY well (I dont even think that war could be simulated)

I think that there could be some interest in starting the game in 1912 or maybe even 1910. Gives a chance to throw in a few extra events in the buildup to war, as well as make the minor players a little more playable.

i hope you can start before 1920 or you have a huge problem :(

i was also hoping someone would make it mod in the 1700 and 1800's through the american revolution and napoleon wars in europe and the american civil war :]

but this will ruin everything if u cant start before 1920

You can start before 1920. I thought N!ghtY meant that it would crasch when you reach 1920. I've managed to start the game 1914 several times so that's no problem.

If you want the American revolution and the Napoleon wars, why not play EU2?

Missed your post. Well, we have talked a lot about the start date. Summer 1914, January 1914, 1910, 1905, 1900, and even some dates in the 19th century where up. But we realized that we wanted to make a WWI game, and not a fantasy game. Starting earlier than 1914 will certainly screw to much up to make it a WWI game. There where far to many disputes and alignment changes to make it doable, and, if it's hard to find info for 1936, it's even harder to find it for 1914, and almost impossible to find any for 1910 or earlier. We decided to let the game start at January 1914, to make some modifications to history possible.

If someone wants to use this mod (when it's finished), to make a 1910-mod, fine for me, but I certainly won't help, because that would be far to much work. :)

Ok, it's time to get serious.

We all know that the game will start January 1, 1914, that date is final. But what about the end date? And should we include peace events like Versailles?

I would go for 1920 or 1922 as end date as to allow an unhistorically long war to progress further than to 1918.

About peace event, I don't really know...

/Johan

i would say make the the end date January 1, 1924. It allows for an uncharacteristically long war. Also if we do have a peace event it allows then jump in maybe as a faction in the Russian civil war (dependent on there being one of course).

As for a peace event...well a Brest-Litovisk is a must. A Versailles treaty though could be added to a later version if needs be.

Agreed on the start date - push it back any earlier and the mod will never get finished.

In my view, the various conflicts around the world in 1919-23 or so were part of WW1 - they were the mopping-up stages. The big empires collapsed, and the fighting didn't stop until the dust had settled and proper successor states emerged. We should include this. Of course, a human player leading one of the major powers will have conquered the world by 1916, so perhaps we don't need too much detail. :)

I also think that "Bitter Peace" style events are essential for the major powers. After all, WW1 didn't end with the total conquest and occupation of the losers, and so the player shouldn't have to march into Berlin in order to defeat Germany...

I concur with StephenT on the "Bitter Peace" style of events.

As to what the conditions for each of the major powers would be for this events to take place, I am not so sure.

In my opinion the game should run until December 31st, 1924, as it gives plenty of playing time, and allows the war to develop and its prospective results to manifest properly. Seeing as important events occurred in 1923, another year would allow these events to unfold in the game until the games conclusion at the end of 1924.

I agree that ‘bitter peace’ events are crucial – and that there should be events that simulate all the peace treaties, the collapse of Austria-Hungary etc.

The countries that emerged from the peace treaties should also be simulated: Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Yugoslavia and so on, using the tags from the standard HOI.

Essentially, there must be two sides to the coin, which is why I’d suggest some alternative peace treaties for the defeat of the Allied powers. Brest-Litovsk handled the Russians, and so how about a theoretical ‘Treaty of Berlin’ that puts German terms to the British and French or a ‘Treaty of Constantinople’ that puts Turkish terms before the allied powers?

Ok, January 1924 or January 1925?

OnWar.com is a good page for looking up conflicts during the 20th century (so we don't miss anything) and I have to say that we have some great work ahead of us If we are to do everything until 1924.

Conflicts 1915-1919
Conflicts 1920-1924

:)

I'm about to order the "World War I Databook" this week. :D

/Johan

I've done all my ministers on the basis of 31st December 1924 :D

I'm not sure about having too many events simulating wars, as nothing of the type happens post-1945 in the standard version.

I'll be ordering the book tomorrow.
