Late addition to the talk here, but if the Kalaallit get locations in the north of Greenland one of them should have an Iron rgo to represent the Cape York Meteorite. From reading the wikipedia article, it seems the Kalaallit used it for cold forged tools and arrowheads, and traded it traded across arctic North America, including to the Norse.

Back again with more RGO recommendations for Greenland. So I got curious about the lead in Ivituut and researched it a bit. The Wikipedia page for Ivittuut mentions it, but doesn't give a date (its date of 1799 is specifically for Cryolite). Their source for the silver-lead galena mining gives a date of 1853 and states it was only in operation for 6 months because there was so little. The Cryolite mining was much more significant and longer lasting in the location, which i guess could be represented as alum? Another option would be copper to represent the Jovsa Copper mine which wasn't too far from Ivittuut (where the mine is located on the game map is wasteland).

The Jovsa copper mine was discovered and first worked from 1852-1856. Mining picked back up from 1905-1914, with the addition of a smelter. During that period, "The result of 10 years of mining can be summarized thus: 2252 tons of copper ore were mined, yielding little more than a mere 60 tons of copper, As a minor bonus, over 50 kg of silver and half a kg of gold were also extracted" (The Josva Copper Mine).

The other early mine was the Frederik VII's Mine discovered around 1851, which I couldn't find much written about. It seems to have been small, only producing about 18 tons of copper/silver ores (Mindat).

In more modern times the Petursvik location is host to the former Nalunaq mine, a high-grade gold mine that produced approximately 350,000 oz. from 2004-2013 (Source). Aside from that, coal, lead, silver, and zinc were mined in various places in the 20th century, but far from the locations present in game (See: Mestervig, Maamorilik, and Qullissat).

According to this article, archaeology shows the Norse did grow barley at several farms in small amounts, but that it was likely impacted by climate change. Maybe Greenland should have some starting locations with sturdy grains that later get taken away by an event? Although, then I'd also expect Iceland to have some too.

I'm surprised that there's no fur producing locations either. Assuming the wild game in the Altafjord location represents seals, it wouldn't be unreasonable to replace some of the fish locations with fur.

Proposed changes: AFAIK the Norse didn't mine in Greenland, but since its already there replace the lead in Ivituut with copper or alum. Consider adding silver or copper to Hvalsey and per my earlier post, consider adding Iron in the far north. Maybe add an event to invest in prospecting that later causes mineral resources to appear? Also consider adding 1-2 sturdy grains (barley) to Greenland and Iceland, let them have beer! Some of the locations with fish could be replaced with fur too.

This finding in Greenland is from the height of the Medieval Warm period. This strikes me as highly unlikely to have lasted into the 1300s.

A sturdy grain location in Iceland is also a stretch at this point, but the case for it is a bit stronger. I found this source a while back:

So maybe, maybe not. It wasn't particularly significant even at the best of times, so it should be in one location at most, somewhere in the south-west farthing. And then changed to something else by event circa 1500.

Also, this is completely unrelated, but I can't believe it's almost been a year since this thread was posted. I've asked a couple of times whether this map thread will be getting a feedback review, and never gotten an answer. I really really hope it does, because I NEED to know if Iceland is getting its god-given southern coastline back. Even MORE than I need the release date.

1. There is no evidence of the Thule culture inhabiting the same areas as the Norse (although some contacts are reported, apparently they were present more to the north of Greenland).
2. We have to review a bit the sea zone area map, thus it wouldn't be very productive to present it yet.
3. Yes, Madeira is one location.
4. Orchil or orcein was a type of dye exploited by the Guanches.
5. If sources of Norse presence in the 14th are found, maybe.
Whats the difference between norse and icelandic culture? Like history wise?
