WRT building metal extractors, just how close do they need to be to a dome in order to not get the "too far from domes" warning? Do they have to be right next door?

I'm confused about food consumption. How much do my colonists eat per Sol? This is a pretty important rate that I can't find anywhere.

Also how do they get food? Do I need a grocer or similar building in every dome? Is the food stored at residences?

Does "Easy" start really have no resources on the rocket? I laid down power cables and a concrete extractor and the drones just sat. I checked my colony overview and zilch, zip, nada. This may be a use of the word "easy" I have not encountered before. Is it like "Fun" in DF? [restarting, but I did Save in case I'm clueless]

Power Cables and concrete extractor need metals.
Metals should be available as surface deposits, so wont be in the starting cargo.
Scan sectors, look for surface metal and sent the RC transport to collect it, the drop it back in range of the drones who will use it to build

I need to extract water from a second water deposit, but the closest one is quite far away. How do I maintain what will need to be a very long pipe/power line in between?

Thanks. I think I started in a mineral poor spot. Restarted, and ran into completely different issues! Yay learning.

The tunnels are in the game for this exact purpose. Build one opening near your colony and the other near the water deposit. The tunnel acts as an underground pipe.

You could set up a series of overlapping drone hubs that could maintain or manually bring a RC Rover out occasionally and have their drones do the maintenance.

Ultimately I did a combo of the two. - A tunnel to another level and then a drone hub to reach the water deposit. Still pretty micro-intensive though - they really need to make expansion less tedious. My second water deposit is drying up and I'm dreading having to do this again and again.

You could throw down a few evaporators, they just take power and maintenance. Then when you deep scan you might find a big underground reservoir that'd handle all your water instead of chasing far flung low grade water sources.

Wish I could make them. The tech hasn't shown up yet and I don't have the cash to ship prefabs over.

Another thing: power, water and oxygen form one single network. That means any connection to a building is always both in and out.

Which means you can bring water to one side of a dome and then place a second dome on the other side and you can then just lay pipe between the domes, you don't need to connect dome 2 to a water producer.

I would like to add something, apparently you can build Stirling Generators inside domes thus shielding them from dust so you can run them opened non stop.

So far I have not seen a downside to this.

An Idiot would be able to wreck it. IF you a an idiot on course.

And it take place, so much valuable place early on.

It only takes 1 slot, in all domes i made so far, there has always been 1 slot empty in one of the areas you can build ... in my first dome i usually go with a diner, infirmary and something else and that usually ends up with the center tile empty, perfect for a generator.

In my first colony, playing with the Paradox sponsor, buildings would stop producing if their onsite waste storage as full. The only way I could get them producing against was to build dump sites. So maybe #8 only applied in the pre-release version.
This could also be indicative of a lack of drones. Waste stone seems to have a very low priority, so if all your drones are busy with other stuff, they might just pile up in the building.

Does anyone here have an accurate theory on how Colonist Interest works? Is their comfort higher if you give them what they want? Will they make due with something else?
I am pretty sure there is a detailed timeline/overview for every colonist in their details. Iirc unfulfilled interest demands create a negative comfort, while fulfilled ones increase it (modified by service quality). You can get by with one or even two categories unfulfilled from my play experience.

They need to be inside the dome's blue area of influence.

Your pre-scanned landing area should contain a few rich metal deposits. Your drones will harvest those to automatically (but you might need to place a depo?). So this shouldn't be any issue.

I'd recommend to rely on Moisture Vaporizers unless the map is exceptionally poor in terms of metals. Long-range expansion requires either plenty of drone hubs (which need electronics, so they are costly to maintain) or constant babysitting with a rover.

Can anyone offer advice with Subsurface Heaters? I'm not sure if I have found a minor bug or if I am misunderstanding a game dynamic.

My game is located in a cold area so I am forced to require heaters in certain spots on the map. I placed a dome in one of these areas (turned off, not finished) for the purpose of planning around it.

I got the heater up and running but during the night the heater lost power and froze. So I have a dead heater essentially (heaters should be restorable IMO) but the problem is, I don't think it should have frozen in the first place. My colony is currently solar panel dependant, so naturally at night I am not making power. However I did/do have enough power to make it through the night, in fact I had 3 times more powered stored than I required but the heater froze anyway.

Now I do monitor pipe/cable issues and there were none, so the heater should have been getting more than enough of every thing to keep it functional. The only other building I had that uses water was turned off (fuel depot which already had 2 full fuel storage areas).

So the question is, am I missing something that lead to the heater legitimately freezing or have I encountered a bug due to relying on stored power during the night hours?

I've seen it happen even when the drone were just sitting there waiting for something to do.

Edit: In my latest game it worked exactly as indicated in the OP. So it could have been a bug in my previous games with idle drones near the building that stopped working due to waste storage being full.

You can select a drone and then use a button in its own UI, or a simple right-click, to send it to another base.

So you can order a rocket with another load of drones and then assign them to your Drone Hub.

Note that I have not found a way to move all drones from one controller to another.
(Also note I honestly don't have a clue if drones go back with the rocket if you send it back to Earth...)
Drones from rocket go to nearest Drone Hub with capacity. In my case they went to Drone hub, filled it to 20 and then went to RC Drone. I guess they will disassemble into prefabs if they won't have any place to go, since rocket always leave empty (with exception for exports of course)
