So yeah I've got this problem.

Just started as a random lord and I spend over 30 minutes browsing trough all lords and other characters.

Didn't know Alliser Thorne's brother is a lord. Never really knew where the House of Baelish' seat was. Great!

But I can't start a game. I can't choose!
Who knows a gold start? Preferably a small lord but one with a background. :)

How about Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane? He's a count in the westerlands, it's really fun to roleplay as a cruel tyrant! Other suggestions would be the Velaryon kid at the stepstones (Intentionally vague since I don't know if you're up to date with the books), the Thenns beyond The Wall (trying to usurp Mance's title while avoiding the Others is a nice challenge). I also like playing with Jon Connington in Robert's Rebellion scenario and helping the crown against the rebels - winning or losing, it's fun to side with the Targs.

Lord Orton Merryweather of Longtable for trying to claw your way to LP of the Reach and then perhaps the Iron Throne, or Lord Bronn of Stokeworth in AFFC can be interesting.

Play as lord Bronn in the A feast for Crows scenario, aim to become High Lord as Bronn and later the first Lord Paramount of the Crownlands with the Bronn dynasty!

Yeah. I am almost done with A Dance of Dragons. Didn't read the first books tho. ;)

And yeah, Gregor is cool. I did start a game as him by the way, but I could not see good potential for expansion, as your a direct vassal of one of the strongest lords in Westeros :p
But I might just try :)

I love playing as oldtown or the arbour. If you have ruler designer, you could make a character for lonely isle that is a stark. He can the long lost ancestor of Brandon the shipwright who sailed West.

Trying one of the more inherently hostile groups could work. A successful Ironborn independence-and-conquer game is always satisfying. However, one could say that they have a few things going for them, especially given all the events that; try out being a Stepstone's pirate king or a Basilisk Islander lord for a experience with a unstable realm.

We all know the books are going to end with Bronn sitting on the Iron Throne.

And there's always the Langwards, if you like the chalenge of starting waaaaay down the ladder and working your way up.

A nice coat of arms (black hills and a crown made of stars over a burgundy sky), dweling in what is not even an actual castle, mind you, but just a glorified tower (Large Keep II, if I recall it right), just one holding (Langward Hall) to their name and not a single vassal to speak of, while seated dead on center of the Oh-so-very-stable-well-not-that-much frontier between the Crownlands and the Stormlands.

If you ever wondered what would be to start a game as a landed knight instead of a lord, house Langward is one of the closest houses you will get.

Or you could try starting as Velaryons. It´s the only High Valyrian house besides Targaryens and Blackfyres and it owns only one county. It is also de jure part of High Lordship of Dragonstone, so you don´t have some small duchy rank lord above you, but king or his heir. And to make it more interesting, in Clash of Kings, it is the only house under Stannis that has R´hllor as its religion (and due to game mechanics, nobody will want to marry you or your heir, because you are an infidel...what does it matter that you are well known prestigious house of Old Valyria, you believe in something else, so no women for you).
Also, if you want easier start, Corlys Velaryon from Dance of Dragons was probably the richest man in Westeros...his 2k gold proves it.
