Playing Portugal the following happened:

I had conquered the Inca empire. Then I got attacked in one of those former Inca provinces without DOW by Spain. They took my province and I could not counter attack.

The next province was better defended and was able to defend itself.

1) Is this the effect of the Tordesillas Treaty?
2) Where exactly in South America is the Tordesillas border between Spain and Portugal?
3) Once I lose a province to Spain it is just lost without possibility to recover it?
3) Do I just have to take into account random attacks from the Spanish until 1640 or so? :(

Yes

Should be visible in the map in colonisation mode, after that the treaty goes into effect. Provinces is marked with a shield from the nation wich got it in the treaty. Roughly Brazil is portugese and the rest is Spainsh.

Yes

Yes, or turn protestant.

In the real world, Tordesillas line was 370 leagues away from the west coast of Cabo Verde Islands.

... and was shifted to the West later to reflect the Portuguese posessions on the Brasilian coast.

Thanks, I'll try that if I find the colonisation mode. Is that the political view?

3) No! It is not lost forever - but you would need to a DOW on Spain to get it back. The Treaty basically says that spain can attack any colony on one side of the dividing line and portugal can attack any colony on the other side. The real value of the treaty is that Spain and Portugal do not need a DOW to attack provided the target is on their side of the line.

4) If you are on their side of the line - they will attack you.

BTW, all your questions are answered in my FAQ.

Thanks I now viewed it (with my old NS 4.7).

Converting to Protestantism as Portugal seems a little bit too far from history, though.
