Does being the main producer of something (furs,wine, whatever) gives any kind of advantage or is it indicated just for one's information?

Don't you get extra cash when certain enhancements are built? Governors increase the demand for furs and tobacco, I think, and as they get built won't you see an increase in ducats if you are the leading exporter of said products?
But isn't that the global demand increase so it really doesn't matter whether u lead or not ?
