This process initially began as an attempt to rename my Ironman saves so they better reflect what run they encompassed. It has now turn into an attempt to also transfer my cloud saves to local storage (and maybe also back?) due to my data hoarding needs.
I have seen this FAQ by Christian Arvidsson on Paradox Plaza titled 'Retrieve your cloud saves (Windows version!)' (link removed due to content spam filter), which seems like it may work, but - for reasons I'll detail below - I'm hesitant to try until I get some community confirmation that it will work.
My first attempt at renaming a cloud-stored Ironman save went like this (and why I'm hesitant to proceed further):
1. Cloud saves are active.
2. In windows, go to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[steam ID]\1158310\remote\save games
3. Rename one of the saves (I did test_ironman.ck3)
4. Launch the game. Fortuitously I still had file explore open on my second monitor. I noticed the game immediately re-downloaded a new copy of the save under the old ironman save name.
5. While the game is initialising, it'll lock up the whole computer. No way to alt-tab or open task manager. Need's a hard re-boot.
The Fix:
Simply delete that save file you renamed. The game will now launch normally.
This process is repeatable; meaning there's something with the interaction of the saves that causes this hard-freeze of the PC while CK3 in initialising.
Out of curiosity, I did turn off cloud saves on Steam for the game to see if that would allow me to continue playing locally. But, even though the saves were present in the above folder location, they were not seen in the game. It acted as if they did not exist until I turned cloud saves back on.
So my question is this; how do I go about moving these save files from the above to C:\Users\[user_id]\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings III\save games ; can I move them back, is it possible to rename them - or is there something inherit about ironman saves that prevents this?
