Power distributed between families, by force and threat of force (majority decisions). Sweden was quite clannish/tribal in the early parts of the game period. There were actually a few 'Laen' back the where the King had his personal henchman to overlook things in the greater area. Kalmar was such area.

The EU1 manual is almost like a history book. I learned some stuff from it. Although it is kinda funny how every example seems to be about a swedish king. ;)

I think it should be plausible at some point to take lands from your vassals and find someone else to take them, or possibly even take them for yourself..

but maybe it will be to your benefit to keep them in your vassals hands since you dont want to worry about the proper governance of all your lands when your vassals do it oh so well. :)

I found vassals served almost no purpose in EU2. I am happy that they seem to be of far greater importance in CK.

Will your king's location have anything to say on your relationship with your vassals? i.e. you spend too much time away from a part of your kingdom and the nobles there will start thinking to independently and get delusions of grandeur.

In early medieval Norway the Kind would travel through the different regions of his land to look up on his nobles and assert his authority over them. Will this kind of overseeing be in the game?

Also, can vassals who are ill-disposed towards you/your house go together (especially in times of succesion) and support a pretender or another claimant to the throne? If so, what can you do to get them in line? (Except rally the King's men, raid their lands and kill the upstarts...:p )

isnt that always the best option.. :p

you bring up a lot of good points though..

if I am a 'crusader king'..who knows what waits for me when I get home?

What would be kinda cool is if your info on provinces was dependent on the physical location of your king. For example if your king was in palestine somewhere, he might not be aware of a major rebellion back home. Or at least, not until several months after it has begun.

That might be a little too medieval total warish though.

Exactly. That would be a cool feature, you could get small hints from loyalists at home, maybe by personal letters or messengers, that things were afoot and trouble is brewing... then what to do? Get the galley back to get your nobles in line or wait for Acre to fall to your siege engines...

Perhaps you could appoint a loyal Steward at home when you are off to slaughter infidels, but then what if he is bribed/threatened by some of your 'loyal' nobles...

could be cool..

yes it would be. Unlike in EU2 where you knew where rebellions were occuring, and could put them down immediately - your troops respond immediately to orders - it could make creating a large realm not only difficult but undesirable. Instead focusing on certain areas and establishing yourself would be key as I think it ought to be.

I dont really think I want to see any world conquest like we do with EU2 and no doubt will see with HOI.

Right!

How should vassals be treated? And what options do you have for treating your vassals?

I'd think you could bribe them, frighten them... but can you lose vassalage?

I'd think I'd prefer keeping my vassals fairly happy. Intermarrying with them, trying to get my hands on their lands.

Can you raise the status of a vassal?

So many questions... :)

Norg, for some reason this reminds of a certain, "Relasing your vasssal, and treating your manservant discussion? ;) "

Do you have something you want to tell us?:D

Apart fromthat, very good discussion, I would say that the problem not only lies in treating your existing vassals well, but also attracting the right ones AND making sure the other kings have trouble with their vassals (perhaps you need a way to treat the other's vassals well?)

Manservants do not enter into this. :D

Uhm... there have been many a good point made. I hope for some RPG and flexibility with this one. :)

I think in one of the Development's Diaries, Sergei said something about the "King's travel around the country" feature being completed. This would mean that the answer to your question is "yes" :)
